Campgrounds and RV parks near Eclectic, AL

Water recreation drives most trips. Lake Martin offers boating, fishing, and swimming, and Wind Creek State Park provides direct shoreline access, hiking trails, a marina, and Eagle zip line tours, fishing, boating, archery range, horseback riding, and picnic pavilions. Wind Creek State Park is a 1,445-acre state park among the bays of 41,000-acre Lake Martin. On the Coosa River side, Camp Sherrye on the Coosa sits near paddling outfitters and the Wetumpka impact crater, a several-mile-wide asteroid impact site. Kayak and tube rentals are available through local operators in Wetumpka. Montgomery, a short drive south, adds civil rights history, the Montgomery Zoo, the Hank Williams Museum, and the Alabama Shakespeare Festival grounds. Families using Montgomery KOA or Capital City RV Park as a base can combine city sightseeing with day trips back to the lake.

Central Alabama has a humid subtropical climate. Winters are mild and rainy, with short cold spells possible, and summers are hot and muggy with many hours of sunshine but also rains and thunderstorms. Snow is rare and rarely disrupts camping. Spring and fall are the most comfortable seasons for RV travel. Winter and spring bring widespread rainfall from frontal systems and occasional severe weather, while summer rainfall is dominated by frequent thunderstorms. October and November are comfortable, with lower humidity and rainfall near its annual minimum, making them prime windows for site selection at Wind Creek. Summer is peak season on Lake Martin, and Wind Creek fills quickly. Booking well in advance is recommended during summer months and holidays, and some premium waterfront sites require a 7-day minimum reservation. Lake levels on Lake Martin are typically drawn down in late fall through winter for flood control, which can reduce shoreline access at some sites.

Wind Creek is a large, active campground. The park's 39 renovated sites have 16-foot-wide and 60-foot-long concrete pads, with amenities including water, sewer, 50- or 30-amp electrical service, waterfront access, and TV service. Bathhouses are located throughout the campground, with two laundry facilities in the park, one at the marina and the other at B-1 bathhouse. Camp Sherrye on the Coosa features full hookups, concrete patios, a screened pavilion, a kayak launch, and a security gate. Some sites face the river directly. Capital City RV Park and Montgomery KOA offer full-hookup pull-through sites with private baths and standard KOA amenities respectively. Cell service is generally reliable across the area. Shade varies: Wind Creek has mature trees on many loops, while some Montgomery-area parks are more open.
