Campgrounds and RV parks near Elmore, AL

The Coosa River is the main draw. Camp Sherrye on the Coosa has an easy-access kayak ramp and a sand bar next to a screened pavilion, and outfitters in nearby Wetumpka rent kayaks, canoes, and tubes. Bass, crappie, and catfish fishing on the Coosa and on nearby lakes draw anglers year-round. History travelers can visit Fort Toulouse-Fort Jackson Park near Wetumpka, which combines a recreated 1751 French fort and partially restored 1814 American fort with riverside trails and a prehistoric Indian mound. Downtown Montgomery, roughly a half-hour south, offers civil rights sites, the Rosa Parks Museum, and the Alabama state capitol. Other nearby stops include the Wetumpka Impact Crater rim trails, Wind Creek Casino, and the Alabama Nature Center. Prattville, just west of Elmore, has a walkable historic downtown and Autauga Creek paddling access.

Central Alabama has a humid subtropical climate with hot, humid summers and mild winters. The sweet spot for an RV trip is mid-March through late April and late September through early November, when daytime highs sit in the mid-70s to low-80s Fahrenheit, humidity drops, and rain slackens. Summer brings daytime highs regularly above 90°F, high humidity, and afternoon thunderstorms. Sites remain available at most private parks, but shaded pads and hookups with 50-amp service are worth prioritizing to run air conditioning. Tropical systems can push heavy rain inland from June through November during Atlantic hurricane season. Winters are short and mild, with January averaging highs near 59°F and lows near 38°F. Snow is rare. Spring is the region's main severe-weather season, with thunderstorms and occasional tornadoes; Alabama also sees a secondary tornado peak in November and December, so travelers should monitor National Weather Service alerts and identify a shelter option at each campground on arrival.

Most private RV parks in the Elmore area offer full hookups with 30- and 50-amp service, level pull-through or back-in sites, and paved or gravel pads. Big-rig access is generally good along the I-65 corridor. Riverfront parks like Camp Sherrye on the Coosa include concrete patios and waterfront sites, but shade varies and some parks have limited tree cover. Expect standard park rules: quiet hours in the evening, leashed pets, and a check-in window typically in the early afternoon. Cell coverage is reliable near Montgomery, Prattville, and Wetumpka; Wi-Fi quality at campgrounds is mixed. Bring insect repellent from spring through fall, plan for humidity, and confirm hookup amperage when booking if traveling in a larger rig or during peak summer heat.
