Campgrounds near Forestdale, Alabama
Forestdale is an unincorporated community in Jefferson County just northwest of downtown Birmingham, which puts RV travelers within a short drive of both urban attractions and Alabama's largest state park. Most campgrounds in the area cluster along the I-65 and I-459 corridors south and east of the city, with the highest concentration of hookup sites in and around Pelham and Hoover.
Options range from full-service commercial parks to state-run campgrounds. Carson Village Moblie Home and RV Park and Hoover RV Park serve travelers who want quick access to Birmingham. Birmingham South RV Park sits along the I-65 corridor for easy interstate access. Oak Mountain State Park, Alabama's largest state park at 9,940 acres, sits just outside Birmingham, and together with its dedicated Equestrian campground it provides the most substantial public-land camping in the region.
Most private parks in the area operate year round, while state park sites remain open through all four seasons. The region's mild climate makes shoulder-season trips practical, though summer heat and spring storms shape when the campgrounds fill up.
Things to do near Forestdale
Oak Mountain State Park is the primary outdoor draw. The main campground offers 84 RV and 66 tent sites with a mix of partial and full hookups and primitive sites, plus access to bathhouses near Beaver Lake. The park has hiking and mountain-biking trails, a swimming beach, fishing lakes, an 18-hole golf course, and the Alabama Wildlife Center rehabilitation facility. Families often combine a campground stay with the park's petting farm and interpretive programs.
In Birmingham itself, RV travelers can visit the Birmingham Civil Rights Institute, Sloss Furnaces National Historic Landmark, the Birmingham Zoo, and the McWane Science Center. Ruffner Mountain Nature Preserve and Turkey Creek Nature Preserve offer additional hiking within a short drive of Forestdale.
Equestrian visitors can base out of the dedicated horse camp at Oak Mountain and access designated horse trails directly from their site.

Peak season at Oak Mountain State Park runs from spring through early fall, with the busiest weeks stretching from March into October. Spring brings warm days, wildflowers, and the highest rainfall totals of the year, along with the region's severe-thunderstorm and tornado risk. Sites at the state park and popular private parks fill quickly on weekends from April through Memorial Day.
Summer is hot and humid, with afternoon thunderstorms common. Beach concessions and boat, canoe, and kayak rentals at Oak Mountain generally operate only during the summer window, so families targeting swimming and paddling should plan accordingly. Fall cools off gradually, rainfall eases, and October delivers some of the most comfortable camping weather of the year.
The campgrounds are open year round, so winter can be a quieter time to visit with lower demand for sites. Winter campers should pack for cold nights, since Birmingham can dip near or below freezing, and expect wet stretches as precipitation stays relatively high through December and January.
How to book a campground near Forestdale
Private parks in the Birmingham area typically take reservations directly by phone or through their own websites. Availability at Hoover RV Park, Carson Village Moblie Home and RV Park, and Birmingham South RV Park tightens on weekends when Birmingham hosts sporting events, festivals, or conventions, so booking a week or two out is prudent.
Oak Mountain State Park and its Equestrian campground use the Alabama State Parks reservation system at reserve.alapark.com, or reservations can be made by calling the park. Advance reservations may be made up to one year ahead. Holiday weekends are typically booked several months out, and weekends and major holidays during peak season often require a two- or three-night minimum stay.
What to expect
At Alabama State Parks, standard campground check-in is in the afternoon and check-out is late morning. An entrance fee is charged separately from the camping fee at Oak Mountain, so plan for both when budgeting the stay.
Hookup configurations vary. Oak Mountain's main campground was rebuilt recently, with widened pads, upgraded water and sewer lines, and 50/30-amp electrical service throughout. Equestrian sites have 50-amp service, water and sewer hookups, a dump station for horse waste, fire rings, and picnic tables, and current negative Coggins tests are required to bring horses into the park.
Cell service is generally reliable at the private parks close to Birmingham and patchier deeper inside Oak Mountain. Supplies are easy to restock in Hoover, Pelham, or Birmingham before heading to the campground.

Avoid the downtown Malfunction Junction (I-65/I-20/I-59 interchange) during weekday rush hours (7 to 9 a.m. and 4 to 6 p.m.). Watch for low railroad bridges on older surface streets in central Birmingham, most are clearly posted under 12 feet. Summer thunderstorms can pop up fast, so check the National Weather Service Birmingham office before long drives. Insider tip: take US-31 south to Oak Mountain for a scenic, low-stress alternative to I-65.

alabama.travel/How do payments and the security deposit work on an RVezy Forestdale rental?

To avoid deposit issues on your RV rental in Alabama, return the RV on time, refill fuel and propane as agreed, empty tanks if required, and take dated photos at pickup and dropoff. Tip: do a walkthrough video with your host so everyone is aligned from the start.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360038106214-How-the-security-deposit-worksWhere can I park or stay overnight in an RV around Forestdale?
You have plenty of legal options for where to park an RV in Forestdale and the wider Birmingham area. Some Walmart Supercenters and Cracker Barrel locations near Forestdale and Fultondale may allow one-night RV parking, but always confirm with the manager on arrival. For real camping, head to Oak Mountain State Park, Tannehill Ironworks Historical State Park, or Hoover Met Complex RV Park, all within 30 minutes. Tip: Buc-ee's in Leeds is RV-friendly for fuel and quick stops, but does not allow overnight parking.
