Camping near Grayson Valley, Alabama
Grayson Valley is an unincorporated community in Jefferson County, just northeast of Birmingham. RV travelers use it as a base for exploring the Birmingham metro and the wooded ridges of central Alabama. Campgrounds within a short drive range from small private RV parks to two Alabama State Parks with hookup sites, primitive camping, and cave or lake access.
Oak Mountain State Park, roughly 15 miles south of downtown Birmingham, is the largest state park in Alabama at 9,940 acres and provides hiking, camping, golf, waterfalls, swimming, a BMX track, a dog park, horseback riding, mountain biking, and fishing among other attractions. To the north, Rickwood Caverns State Park offers a gift shop, picnicking, gemstone mining, camping, and a playground, and features an Olympic-size swimming pool fed by water from the cave.
Closer in, Carson Village Moblie Home and RV Park sits within easy reach of Grayson Valley for basic hookup stays, while Hoover RV Park on the south side of the metro puts travelers next to the Hoover Met sports complex. Families visiting for baseball tournaments, cave tours, or lake weekends will find a mix of full-hookup, partial-hookup, and primitive options within an hour of town.
Things to do around Grayson Valley
Oak Mountain State Park is the main outdoor draw. The campground was renovated in 2024 and sits in rolling hills next to Beaver Lake, and it is open year round. On-park recreation includes hiking, mountain biking, swimming, fishing, golfing at the 18-hole course, boating on the lakes, and horseback riding on the trail network. The Equestrian Campground within Oak Mountain gives horse owners direct trail access with horse stalls available, with a roof installed over the stalls thanks to a grant to the Central Alabama Chapter of the Backcountry Horsemen of America.
At Rickwood Caverns State Park, travelers can travel 175 feet beneath the earth into an underground wonder that maintains a constant 58 to 62 degree temperature year-round. Kids often gravitate to gemstone mining and the spring-fed pool.
In Birmingham itself, families can pair camp days with the Birmingham Zoo, the McWane Science Center, Railroad Park, and Regions Field for a Barons game.

Central Alabama has a humid subtropical climate. Birmingham has hot summers and cool winters with strong seasonal temperature contrasts, rainfall spread fairly evenly through the year with spring typically wettest, occasional winter snowfall, and over 2,600 hours of sunshine annually. Alabama is one of the few places in the world that has a secondary tornado season in November and December along with the spring severe weather season.
Peak season at Oak Mountain State Park runs from March to October, with beach concessions and canoe, kayak, and boat rentals only available over the summer; the park and campgrounds are open year round, so winter visits mean smaller crowds, though temperatures can dip close to freezing.
At Rickwood Caverns, summer offers the fullest experience because the spring-fed pool is open while cave tours run year round. Showers at Rickwood are seasonal and closed November through February. Spring and fall bring the most comfortable RV weather.
How to book campgrounds near Grayson Valley
For the two nearby Alabama State Parks, reservations go through the state system at reserve.alapark.com. Advanced reservations may be made up to one year in advance, maximum stay for camping is 14 nights (31 nights November 1 to March 31 at select parks), and there is a non-refundable reservation fee per reserved campsite. Campground check-in time is 2 PM and check-out time is 11 AM.
Holiday weekends at Oak Mountain must be reserved three months in advance, and weekends and major holidays during peak season require a two- or three-night minimum stay. Reservations may be cancelled up to 72 hours prior to the scheduled arrival date with a refund of all paid fees except the non-refundable reservation fee; cancellations made after three days prior to arrival forfeit all fees, taxes and the reservation fee. Hoover RV Park and Carson Village Moblie Home and RV Park book directly through the operator, with daily, weekly, and monthly options.
What to expect on site
The renovated Oak Mountain campground has about 150 single-family campsites, including 62 full-hookup RV sites with 50-amp service, 3 RV sites with water and electric, 67 tent campsites (some with water and electric or electric only), and 12 equestrian sites with full hookups and stalls nearby. Amenities include potable water, flush toilets, hot-water showers, laundry, trash collection, and an RV dump station, plus a playground, beach, fishing pier, golf course, marina, and camp store.
Rickwood Caverns is a small, landscaped campground with 13 water-and-electric RV sites (30/50 amp) suitable for trailers up to 40 feet plus 5 primitive tent sites, and campsites are relatively close together with limited privacy and no sewer hookups at individual sites, though a dump station is available.
The Hoover Met Complex RV Park features 170 asphalt pull-thru sites, each equipped with water, sewer and power hook-up as well as trash service.

Booking is low-risk: RVezy sets the cancellation policy for every rental (not individual hosts), and there's a full money-back grace period right after you book so you can lock in your dates with confidence. After that window, refunds depend on how far out your trip start date is. If your host cancels, RVezy issues a refund or travel credit so you're not left stranded. Review the current RVezy cancellation policy on the Help Center before you book. Pro tip: lock in your dates early, since Birmingham-area rigs sell out fast around football weekends and spring break.

Once you're rolling, take your pup to nearby Red Mountain Park's leash-friendly trails, the off-leash area at George Ward Park, or Oak Mountain State Park's dog beach at Double Oak Lake about 25 miles south. Pro tip: message the host before booking to confirm pet fees and weight limits, and pack a copy of vaccination records since most Alabama state park campgrounds ask to see them.

Yes, RV delivery Grayson Valley is one of the most popular options on RVezy, especially for first-timers who'd rather skip driving a big rig through Birmingham traffic on I-459. Many local hosts will deliver the motorhome or travel trailer straight to your campsite, driveway, or rental home, set it up, level it, hook up power and water, and walk you through every system before they leave. Popular drop-off spots include Oak Mountain State Park, Hoover RV Park, and Birmingham South RV Park in Pelham. Filter by Delivery when you search, then message the host with your destination address to confirm the fee, which usually scales with distance.

Summer brings hot, humid days routinely in the upper 80s to mid-90s, but it's prime time for lake camping at Logan Martin or Smith Lake. Winter is mild by national standards, with highs in the 50s and only occasional freezes, making it a quiet, budget-friendly window for RV camping Grayson Valley adventures. Pro tip: avoid peak tornado-watch days in April by checking the National Weather Service Birmingham forecast before you roll out.
weather.gov/bmx/I've never driven an RV before. Will I be okay?
You'll be just fine, first time renting an RV is more common than you'd think, and your RVezy host has your back. Every pickup starts with a full walkthrough where the host shows you how to operate the generator, slide-outs, water systems, propane, leveling jacks, and dash controls. You can ask every question you want, no judgment. If you're nervous about navigating Birmingham's I-20/59 interchange or the curves on US-280, consider booking a travel trailer-free Class B campervan rental Grayson Valley, or have the host deliver to your campground. Pro tip: do a quick parking lot loop before leaving the host's place so you get comfortable with mirrors and turning radius.
dot.state.al.us/What if I break down on the road in Alabama?
Take a breath, you're covered. Every motorhome rental Grayson Valley booking on RVezy includes 24/7 roadside assistance as part of the renter protection plan, so a flat tire on I-65, a dead battery at Oak Mountain, or a tow situation along the Talladega Scenic Drive is handled with one phone call. You'll also have direct contact with your host, who knows the rig inside and out and can troubleshoot quickly. RVezy's support team is reachable before, during, and after your trip via the Help Center. Pro tip: save the roadside number in your phone before pulling out of the driveway, and keep the host's number pinned too.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/34008759079835-RVezy-renter-protection-plans-in-detailCan I take my Grayson Valley RV rental across state lines or into Canada?
Yes, interstate travel is totally fine on a Grayson Valley RV rental, which is great news since you're sitting at the crossroads of I-20, I-59, and I-65. Popular cross-state routes include the Florida Panhandle (about 5 hours south), Great Smoky Mountains National Park in Tennessee (4.5 hours northeast), and the Mississippi Gulf Coast (5 hours southwest). Canada trips may be permitted depending on the host and protection coverage, so message before booking to confirm. Travel into Mexico is not allowed on RVezy rentals because protection coverage doesn't extend there. Pro tip: Alabama and neighboring states all honor the same regular driver's license, so border crossings within the U.S. are seamless.
dot.state.al.us/What's the realistic fuel budget for an Alabama RV trip?
Budgeting fuel is straightforward in Alabama, where gas prices typically run 20 to 40 cents below the national average. Expect a Class C motorhome to deliver around 8 to 10 miles per gallon, a Class B campervan 16 to 20 mpg, and a travel trailer setup roughly 10 to 13 mpg depending on your tow vehicle. For a 300-mile round trip from Grayson Valley to Gulf Shores in a Class C, plan on about $130 to $170 in fuel at current Alabama pump prices. Pro tip: gas stations along US-280 and I-65 south of Birmingham (like the Pilot in Pelham or Buc-ee's in Leeds) are reliably cheaper than in-town pumps, and Buc-ee's has plenty of space to pull a rig in.
eia.gov/petroleum/gasdiesel/How far in advance should I book a campground near Grayson Valley?
For Alabama State Parks like Oak Mountain or Rickwood Caverns, book 3 to 6 months ahead for spring and fall weekends through the official Alabama State Parks reservation system at alapark.com. Private parks like Hoover RV Park and Birmingham South Campground in Pelham usually open bookings 6 to 12 months out and fill quickly during Talladega NASCAR race weekends (April and October) and Alabama-Auburn football Saturdays. For Corps of Engineers sites on nearby Logan Martin Lake and Lay Lake, use Recreation.gov and reserve up to 6 months in advance. Pro tip: weekday stays at Oak Mountain are often available last-minute even in peak season, so midweek getaways from Grayson Valley are an easy win.
alapark.com/What are driving conditions like around Grayson Valley?
Driving an RV around Grayson Valley is very manageable once you know the local quirks. The big interstates (I-20, I-59, I-65, I-459) are wide and well-maintained, but the Malfunction Junction interchange where I-20/59 meets I-65 downtown can get tight, so route around it via I-459 when possible. Watch for sudden afternoon thunderstorms in summer and occasional severe weather in spring (tornado season peaks in April). Roads through the Appalachian foothills east of town toward Trussville and Leeds have some grades but nothing intimidating. Pro tip: the National Weather Service Birmingham office posts excellent real-time road and weather alerts, and the ALGO Traffic app shows live interstate cameras and incidents statewide.
algotraffic.com/What amenities can I expect at campgrounds near Grayson Valley?
Campgrounds near Grayson Valley generally come well-equipped. Oak Mountain State Park offers full hookups (water, electric 30/50-amp, sewer) on most sites, a dump station, potable water fill stations, hot showers, laundry, and a camp store. Hoover RV Park and Birmingham South RV Park add Wi-Fi, pools, and pull-through sites that easily fit Class A rigs. State park sites typically include a fire ring and picnic table. If you're boondocking or staying somewhere without sewer, the closest public dump stations are at Oak Mountain State Park and several Pilot/Flying J truck stops along I-65. Pro tip: fill fresh water at your host's home or the campground spigot before you set up, since not every site has individual water hookups.
alapark.com/parks/oak-mountain-state-parkWhat's inside a typical Grayson Valley RV rental?
You'll be impressed by how complete most rigs are. A typical RV rental in Grayson Valley sleeps 4 to 8 people across queen beds, bunk beds, and convertible dinettes, with a full kitchen (fridge, stove, microwave, sink), a bathroom with toilet and shower, climate control via roof AC and furnace, and DOT-approved seatbelts for travel passengers. Many include a generator for off-grid power, a flat-screen TV, exterior speakers, and increasingly, Wi-Fi boosters or Starlink. Class B campervans are leaner but still include sleeping, cooking, and toilet basics. Pro tip: check each listing's amenity list and message the host if you need specifics like a CPAP outlet, kid-friendly bunks, or a coffee maker. Most owners include linens and kitchen kits.
fmcsa.dot.gov/regulationsWhat add-ons and pickup options should I know about?
RVezy hosts in the Birmingham area typically offer helpful add-ons that make your trip smoother: camp chairs and outdoor tables ($15 to $30 per trip), bedding and linen packages ($25 to $50), kitchen kits, generators, bike racks, paddleboards, and propane fills. Delivery and setup is the big one, with most Grayson Valley, Trussville, and Center Point hosts willing to deliver within 30 to 50 miles for a per-mile fee. Mileage policies vary, with daily allowances commonly between 100 and 250 miles and weekly unlimited-mileage options for longer hauls. Pickup is usually at the host's home with a 30 to 60 minute walkthrough. Pro tip: confirm dump and refuel return requirements upfront to avoid surprise cleaning fees.
fmcsa.dot.gov/regulationsHow do payment and the security deposit work on RVezy?
Payment is simple and secure: you pay through the RVezy platform with a credit or debit card at the time of booking, never in cash to the host. A refundable security deposit is held separately on your card a few days before pickup and released after return, assuming the RV comes back in the same condition. To avoid any deposit issues on your motorhome rental Grayson Valley booking, take dated photos and a quick video at pickup and drop-off, return the RV with the same fuel and propane levels, and dump tanks if your host requires it. Pro tip: read the host's return checklist in the messages thread the morning of your trip end.
