Campgrounds near Heflin, Alabama
Heflin sits in Cleburne County in east-central Alabama, roughly halfway between Birmingham and Atlanta along the I-20 corridor. The town is bordered by the Talladega National Forest and serves as a practical base for RV travelers heading to the Appalachian foothills, the Pinhoti Trail, and Alabama's highest terrain.
Cheaha State Park sits just south of Heflin, surrounded by the Talladega National Forest on the foothill of the Appalachian Mountains. Campers can choose from 77 full-hookup sites, 26 primitive sites, 28 rustic tent sites, a primitive group campground, and glamping safari tents. Closer to town, Cane Creek RV Park and Campground and Scenic Drive RV Park and Campground handle standard RV needs, while Big Fish At Wedowee RV Park draws anglers heading to Lake Wedowee.
Chief Ladiga Trail Campground caters to cyclists using the paved rail-trail corridor. The Chief Ladiga Trail runs about 39.5 paved miles across Calhoun and Cleburne counties and connects to Georgia's Silver Comet Trail at the state line for long-distance riders.
Things to do near Heflin
Cheaha State Park offers hiking trails, a small lake with a swimming beach, and the observation tower at the highest point in Alabama, 2,407 feet above sea level. Day hikes range from short paved loops to rugged descents into the Cheaha Wilderness, and routes connect to the Pinhoti Trail system that threads the surrounding national forest.
Cyclists head for the Chief Ladiga Trail, which runs from the 4th Street Amtrak Station in Anniston to the Georgia state line and joins the Silver Comet Trail to form a continuous paved corridor of roughly 94 miles. Anglers can fish Lake Wedowee, Coleman Lake, and smaller forest ponds. Talladega Superspeedway lies roughly a half-hour drive west and drives lodging demand on race weekends.

Spring and fall are the most comfortable seasons for RV travel in the Heflin area. March through May brings mild days, blooming dogwoods, and frequent afternoon thunderstorms, part of the region's wettest stretch. Fall foliage on Cheaha Mountain typically peaks in late October and early November, drawing weekend crowds to the state park and forest campgrounds.
Summer is hot and humid. Daytime highs regularly reach the low 90s, and afternoon storms are common, though evenings at higher elevations near Cheaha tend to be cooler than in the valleys. Water-based sites at Coleman Lake and Lake Wedowee stay busy through August.
Winter is mild by northern standards but can be wet. Freezing nights occur, and occasional ice or light snow can affect mountain roads. The maximum stay for camping in Alabama State Parks is 14 nights, extended to 31 nights from November 1 through March 31 at select parks, which suits snowbirds looking for a long southern stay.
How to book campgrounds near Heflin
For Cheaha State Park, reservations go through the Alabama State Parks portal at reserve.alapark.com. Advanced reservations may be made up to one year in advance, and the maximum stay for camping is 14 nights, or 31 nights from November 1 through March 31 at select parks. Campground check-in time is 2 PM and check-out is 11 AM.
Private parks such as Cane Creek RV Park and Campground, Scenic Drive RV Park and Campground, and Big Fish At Wedowee RV Park take reservations directly through their operators. Chief Ladiga Trail Campground also books through its operator. National forest sites in the Shoal Creek Ranger District, including Coleman Lake and Pine Glen, are generally first-come, first-served, so arrive early on holiday weekends.
What to expect on arrival
Expect wooded, rolling terrain and narrow forest roads once you leave the interstate. At Cheaha State Park, check-in is handled at the camp store, and larger rigs should confirm site length before booking mountain-top loops. Improved sites include 20, 30, and 50 amp electric with water and sewer, and pull-through options up to about 60 feet are available in the upper campground.
Cell coverage is spotty inside the Talladega National Forest and near Cheaha's primitive loops. Bring drinking water for national forest sites, which are typically limited to vault toilets and community spigots. Expect steep grades on the approach roads to Cheaha's summit area, and strong winds are common on the ridge during fall and winter.

Heflin sits at the doorstep of some of Alabama's most scenic camping. alapark.com/parks/cheaha-state-parkWhen is the best time to take an RV trip to Heflin?
Heflin is a three-season RV destination, with spring (March to May) and fall (late September to November) as the sweet spots. Spring brings highs in the 70s, dogwood blooms across the Talladega National Forest, and minimal mosquitoes. Fall delivers crisp 60s to 70s daytime temperatures and bright hardwood color along the Talladega Scenic Byway, peaking around late October. Summer (June to August) is humid with highs in the upper 80s to low 90s, perfect for swimming at Coleman Lake but warm for midday hiking. Winters are mild (40s to 50s) and quieter, ideal if you want campgrounds nearly to yourself. Book mid-October at Cheaha State Park for outstanding fall views.
weather.gov/bmx/I've never driven an RV before. Is Heflin a good place to start?
Heflin is one of the friendliest spots in Alabama for first time renting an RV. The town is small and easy to navigate, and most local campgrounds sit just off I-20 or quiet state highways with gentle grades. Every RVezy host gives you a hands-on walkthrough at pickup covering driving, leveling, hookups, water, and the awning, so you will not be guessing. If you want to keep it simple, pick a Class C motorhome or a travel trailer under 25 feet and request delivery so the host handles setup. By dinner the first night, you will feel right at home.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/sections/360008301394-Renting-an-RVWhat if something breaks down during my Heflin RV trip?

help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/34008759079835-RVezy-renter-protection-plans-in-detailCan I take a Heflin RV rental across state lines?
Yes, crossing state lines is one of the best parts of an RV road trip from Heflin. Sitting right on I-20, you can reach Georgia in under 30 minutes, Tennessee in about three hours, and the Florida panhandle in roughly five. U.S. interstate travel is allowed on RVezy rentals, so the Great Smoky Mountains, Savannah, and even New Orleans are within reach. Travel into Mexico is not permitted because insurance coverage does not extend there. For a Canadian road trip, message the host directly through the listing to confirm before booking, as cross-border permission varies by owner.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360039340074-Insurance-coverage-validityWhat kind of gas mileage will my Heflin RV get, and how should I budget for fuel?
Fuel budgeting for your Heflin RV trip is straightforward once you know the rough numbers. Class B campervans typically get 18-22 MPG, Class C motorhomes average 8-12 MPG, Class A coaches run 6-10 MPG, and travel trailers depend on your tow vehicle (usually 10-14 MPG combined). Gas prices in east Alabama tend to sit slightly below the national average, and you'll find affordable fuel at the Pilot Travel Center off I-20 exit 191 in Heflin. For a typical 4-day, 400-mile loop through the Talladega National Forest and Cheaha State Park, budget $120-$250 for fuel depending on RV size.
eia.gov/petroleum/gasdiesel/How far in advance should I book a campground near Heflin?
For the most popular Heflin-area campgrounds, booking 3 to 6 months ahead is the smart move, especially for weekends from April through October. Cheaha State Park, the closest full-hookup option, books through the Alabama State Parks reservation system and fills fast during fall color season and spring break. Coleman Lake Campground in the Talladega National Forest takes reservations through Recreation.gov up to six months out. Pine Glen Recreation Area is first-come, first-served, so arrive by Thursday for weekend spots. For Talladega Superspeedway race weekends, lock in your site as soon as the race calendar is announced.
recreation.gov/camping/campgrounds/234037What are driving conditions like around Heflin?
Driving an RV around Heflin is refreshingly low-stress. I-20 runs right through town with wide lanes and easy on/off ramps, and most rural roads through the Talladega National Forest are paved with moderate grades. The big exception: forest service roads leading to spots like Pine Glen are gravel and can get muddy after rain, so larger Class A rigs are better left at paved campgrounds. The Talladega Scenic Drive (AL-281) up to Cheaha Mountain has some steep grades and tight curves, fun in a Class B or C but slower in a big motorhome. Watch for deer at dawn and dusk anywhere outside town.
algotraffic.com/What amenities will I find at campgrounds near Heflin?
Campground amenities near Heflin range from full-service to delightfully primitive, so you can pick what fits your style. Cheaha State Park offers full hookups (water, electric 30/50 amp, sewer), hot showers, a camp store, and a dump station. Coleman Lake Recreation Area has electric and water hookups, vault and flush toilets, swimming, and a boat ramp, but no sewer (use the dump station at the entrance). Pine Glen is primitive with vault toilets and no hookups. For fresh water and dumping between trips, the Pilot Travel Center off I-20 exit 191 and Cheaha State Park's public dump station are your best bets.
alapark.com/parks/cheaha-state-park/campgroundWhat's inside a typical RV rental in Heflin?
Most RV rentals in Heflin come fully equipped so you can roll in and start camping. Expect a queen or king bed plus convertible dinette and sofa sleepers (sleeping 4-8 depending on size), a full kitchen with fridge, stove, microwave, sink, and cookware, a bathroom with toilet and shower, air conditioning and furnace, and seatbelted seats for travel. Many motorhome rentals in Heflin also include a generator (great for Pine Glen's no-hookup sites), a flat-screen TV, and Bluetooth stereo. WiFi varies, since cell service is spotty in the Talladega National Forest, ask hosts about a mobile hotspot. Check each listing's amenities list to match the rig to your trip.
nhtsa.gov/road-safety/rv-safetyWhat add-ons and extras can I get with my Heflin RV rental?

fmcsa.dot.gov/regulations/rental-vehicleHow does payment and the security deposit work on RVezy?
Payment for your Heflin RV rental is handled entirely through RVezy, so there is no cash or check exchange with the host. You pay your booking total securely online when you reserve, and a refundable security deposit is held separately shortly before pickup. The deposit is released after your trip ends, typically within a few days, assuming the RV is returned in the same condition it left. To avoid deposit issues, take date-stamped photos at pickup and dropoff, return the rig with the agreed fuel and propane levels, and follow the host's cleaning guidelines.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360038106214-How-the-security-deposit-worksAre campervan rentals available in Heflin for a quick weekend trip?
Yes, a campervan rental in Heflin is a great option for couples or solo travelers wanting a nimble weekend escape. Class B vans are easy to drive on I-20, fit into tight forest campsites at Pine Glen, and sip fuel at 18 to 22 MPG, perfect for a quick loop through the Talladega National Forest or up to Cheaha Mountain. Filter RVezy listings by Class B to see available campervans, then message the host about delivery, linens, and any add-ons you would like for the trip.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Heflin%2C%20AlabamaCan I take an RV to a Talladega Superspeedway race from Heflin?
Absolutely, Heflin is one of the best home bases for a NASCAR weekend at Talladega Superspeedway, just 25 miles west on I-20. Many RVezy hosts in the area are festival-friendly and welcome bookings for the spring (GEICO 500) and fall (YellaWood 500) race weekends. Use the Festival-Friendly filter when searching, and book at least 6-9 months ahead because race weekends are the busiest of the year. Talladega allows RV camping right at the track in designated infield and outer lots, with hookups available in premium areas. Pro tip: ask your host about delivery directly to your reserved Talladega RV lot, it's a game-changer.
