Campgrounds near Kimberly, Alabama
Kimberly sits in Jefferson County just off Interstate 65, roughly 20 miles north of downtown Birmingham. The location puts RV travelers within short driving distance of both the Birmingham metro and the wooded ridges of north-central Alabama, giving families access to city attractions without staying in an urban campground.
The closest option is Rickwood Caverns State Park, an Alabama state park north of Warrior that runs a small developed campground alongside its show cave. Carson Village Moblie Home and RV Park offers a nearby private option for travelers who want simple hookups close to town, while Unhitched Arrowhead RV Park and Arrowhead RV Resort at Smith Lake extend the search north to Cullman County lake country.
For a larger state park experience, Oak Mountain State Park sits south of Birmingham near Pelham. It is Alabama's largest state park and functions as the main full-service public campground for the region, with hookups, cabins, and extensive trail access.
Things to do near Kimberly
Rickwood Caverns State Park is the headline attraction close to Kimberly. The park runs guided walking tours of an illuminated limestone cave with ancient marine-fossil formations, plus a seasonal swimming pool fed by cavern water, short hiking trails, and a playground.
Smith Lake, about an hour northwest, is a large reservoir known for clear water, striped and spotted bass fishing, and boating. Arrowhead RV Resort at Smith Lake provides lakeside sites for families who want to spend the trip on the water.
On the south side of Birmingham, Oak Mountain State Park adds mountain biking, an equestrian area, lake swimming, the Alabama Wildlife Center, and the Tree Top Nature Trail boardwalk. Downtown Birmingham museums and Birmingham Barons baseball games are within easy reach for a rain-day plan.

Kimberly has a humid subtropical climate. Summers are long and hot, winters are relatively mild, and rainfall is spread fairly evenly across the year with spring typically the wettest season. Snowfall does occur but is erratic and usually melts quickly.
Spring and fall are the most comfortable windows for RV travel. Daytime highs sit in the 70s and low 80s Fahrenheit, humidity is lower than midsummer, and severe thunderstorm season peaks in April and May, so travelers should follow NWS Birmingham watches and warnings. Summer weekends are the busiest at Rickwood Caverns, and holiday weekends at Oak Mountain State Park should be reserved well in advance.
Winter camping is quiet and works well for travelers who do not need pool access. Alabama State Parks allows extended stays at select parks between November 1 and March 31. The seasonal swimming pool at Rickwood Caverns operates only in the warm months, so plan accordingly for late-fall and winter visits.
How to book near Kimberly
Alabama State Park campgrounds, including Rickwood Caverns State Park and Oak Mountain State Park, use a single reservation system at reserve.alapark.com. Reservations can generally be made up to one year in advance. A non-refundable reservation fee applies per site, check-in is in the early afternoon, and check-out is late morning.
Maximum stay is 14 nights, extended to 31 nights from November 1 to March 31 at select parks. Weekend and holiday reservations often carry two-night or three-night minimums, and holiday weekends at Oak Mountain fill months out.
Private parks in the area, including Carson Village Moblie Home and RV Park, Arrowhead RV Resort at Smith Lake, and Unhitched Arrowhead RV Park, book directly through the operator. Confirm rig-length limits and hookup type before locking in a site.
What to expect at Kimberly campgrounds
Expect a mix of state-park and private-park styles. Rickwood Caverns State Park runs a compact campground with a limited number of developed sites that can accept trailers and motorhomes, plus a handful of primitive sites and a group camp. Sites are close together with limited privacy, and there is a central dump station rather than sewer at every site.
Oak Mountain State Park is much larger, with multiple loops split across RV sites, tent-only areas, an equestrian campground, and backcountry sites. The campground is several miles inside the park along winding roads, so allow extra time when arriving with a longer rig.
Private lakeside options on Smith Lake generally offer full hookups with 30 and 50 amp service. Cell coverage is generally reliable near the interstate and thinner in the wooded interior of the state parks.
