Camping near Lake Purdy, Alabama
Lake Purdy sits southeast of Birmingham in Shelby and Jefferson counties, within a short drive of Alabama's largest state park. The reservoir itself is a drinking-water supply managed by the Birmingham Water Works, so overnight camping happens at surrounding public parks and private RV parks rather than on the lake shoreline.
Oak Mountain State Park is the anchor destination, covering roughly 11,861 acres of forested ridges, fishing lakes, beaches, and a marina. The main campground offers improved sites with hookups plus primitive tent areas, and a separate Equestrian - Oak Mountain State Park loop serves riders traveling with horses.
For RVers who want to stay closer to city services, Birmingham South RV Park and Hoover RV Park sit along the I-65 corridor with full hookups. Carson Village Moblie Home and RV Park rounds out the private options in the area. The mix makes Lake Purdy a practical base for families combining outdoor recreation with easy access to Birmingham and Hoover.
Things to do around Lake Purdy
Oak Mountain State Park drives most of the outdoor activity. The park has an 18-hole championship golf course, a BMX track, cable wakeboarding and watercraft rentals at Flipside Watersports, marina rentals, and Peavine Falls. Multiple lakes support fishing, and two swimming beaches open in summer.
The Alabama Wildlife Center rehabilitates injured native birds on park grounds, and the Tree Top Nature Trail lets visitors view resident raptors from an elevated boardwalk. Mountain biking, trail running, and horseback riding use a dense trail network across the park.
Off-park options include the Cahaba River National Wildlife Refuge, Ruffner Mountain Nature Center, and downtown Birmingham attractions such as Sloss Furnaces and the Birmingham Civil Rights Institute. Birmingham Barons baseball games add a family-friendly evening option.

Peak camping season at Oak Mountain State Park runs from spring through fall, and the campground stays open year round. Spring is the wettest stretch, with frequent thunderstorms and an active severe-weather season across central Alabama. Wildflowers and dogwoods bloom in March and April, and trails are green and full.
Summer brings hot, humid days with highs regularly in the 90s Fahrenheit and about half of summer days topping 90°F. Beach concessions and the boat rental fleet at Oak Mountain operate primarily through the warm season. Afternoon thunderstorms are common, and biting insects peak.
Fall cools through October and November, with lower rainfall and comfortable hiking weather. Winter is mild by North American standards, though nights can dip near freezing and occasional snowfall occurs. Crowds thin, and monthly stays are honored at the park from November 1 through the end of February.
How to book campgrounds near Lake Purdy
Oak Mountain State Park and the Equestrian - Oak Mountain State Park loop are reserved through the Alabama State Parks system at reserve.alapark.com or by phone. Advance reservations may be made up to one year ahead, and holiday weekends fill early. Weekends and holidays during peak season typically carry a two-night minimum, with holiday weekends requiring booking about three months out.
Maximum stay is 14 nights, extending to 31 nights from November 1 through March 31 at select parks. A non-refundable reservation fee applies per site. Check the park's cancellation terms when booking, particularly for monthly reservations.
Birmingham South RV Park, Hoover RV Park, and Carson Village Moblie Home and RV Park each handle bookings directly through the operators. Reserving early is smart for spring race weekends, summer holidays, and football Saturdays.
What to expect on-site
At Oak Mountain State Park, the recently renovated main campground offers full-hookup RV sites with upgraded 50/30-amp service, partial-hookup sites, and primitive tent areas, along with bathhouses. The complete teardown and rebuild included new water and sewer lines and widened camping pads for larger rigs. Check-in is 2 PM and check-out is 11 AM, and a gate-entry fee applies in addition to campsite fees.
The Equestrian - Oak Mountain State Park loop has 12 sites with 50-amp service, water, sewer, fire rings, picnic tables, and covered horse stalls. Guests must supply their own shavings, and a current negative Coggins test is required to enter with horses.
Private RV parks in Hoover and along I-65 lean toward pull-through sites, laundry, and easier big-rig access, with less tree cover than the state park. Pets are allowed on leash across most facilities, with restrictions inside buildings and on beaches.

Good news: a regular driver's license is all you need to rent an RV in Lake Purdy, AL. Alabama does not require a Commercial Driver's License (CDL) or any special endorsement for recreational vehicles under 26,000 pounds, which covers virtually every RV on the RVezy platform, from compact campervans to spacious Class A motorhomes. You'll need to be at least 25 years old and complete the quick ID verification through RVezy when you book. Visiting from another country? Booking your Lake Purdy RV trip is low-risk because RVezy (not individual hosts) sets the cancellation policy, and it includes a full money-back grace period right after you book. After that window, your refund depends on how far out from your trip start date you cancel, and extenuating circumstances may apply in cases like severe weather, which is worth knowing since central Alabama occasionally sees spring thunderstorms. You will see the exact terms that apply to your reservation at checkout and in your RVezy account. Pro tip: if severe weather threatens your trip, contact RVezy support right away so they can help you adjust dates and keep your motorhome rental Lake Purdy adventure on track.

The Buc-ee's in Leeds (about 15 miles north) is a popular fuel and snack stop with competitive prices and plenty of room to maneuver a big rig. I-459 loops around the south side of Birmingham and is the fastest, lowest-stress route for larger Class A rigs. The roads immediately around Lake Purdy (Cahaba Beach Road, Hugh Daniel Drive) are narrow and winding with steep drop-offs, so go slow and use a spotter when meeting oncoming traffic. Summer afternoon thunderstorms can drop heavy rain quickly, so check the radar before hitting the road.
