Campgrounds and RV parks near Lexington, AL

Water dominates the recreation mix. Shoal Creek is popular for canoeing, kayaking, and tubing, with quiet pools, light riffles, and wildlife that can include herons, turtles, and otters. Floats commonly run anywhere from a few hours to most of a day depending on the put-in. Wheeler Lake, the 69,700-acre Tennessee Valley Authority reservoir at Joe Wheeler State Park, draws anglers for bass, bream, and catfish and supports a full-service marina, swimming beach, and boat access. The park also has an 18-hole championship golf course and hiking and biking trails. Families traveling with kids often add David Crockett State Park north of the line for its museum, waterfalls along Shoal Creek, Lindsey Lake paddling with rental rowboats and pedal boats, and hiking trails. Shoal Creek Preserve near Florence adds additional hiking on hardwood and creek-bottom terrain.

Spring and fall are the strongest windows for RV travel in the Lexington area. Wildflowers, mild temperatures, and reliable water levels on Shoal Creek make March through May a favorite for paddlers, while October brings Tennessee Valley foliage and lower humidity. Both shoulder seasons see steady demand at Joe Wheeler State Park and David Crockett State Park, so reserve early. Summer is hot, humid, and busy. Wheeler Lake swimming, marina traffic, and family camping peak from Memorial Day through Labor Day. Afternoon thunderstorms are common, and mosquitoes and ticks are active. Sites with shade and full hookups book out fastest. Winter is the quiet season. Joe Wheeler's campground stays open year-round, and Alabama State Parks allow extended stays of up to 31 nights at select parks from November 1 through March 31, compared with the standard 14-night limit. At David Crockett State Park, Campground 1 along Shoal Creek is open March 1 through November 3, while Campground 2 remains open year-round. Occasional freezes and flash flooding along Shoal Creek can affect access.

Terrain is rolling, wooded, and humid. Expect two-lane county roads between Lexington, Florence, and the state parks, with tighter turns near creek crossings. Most local campgrounds sit on gravel or paved pads under partial tree cover, so plan for satellite obstructions and check clearance on wooded loops. Hookup levels vary. Joe Wheeler State Park offers full hookups at 110 of 116 sites and can accommodate large rigs, while Campground 2 - David Crockett State Park provides 20/30/50-amp electric and water at every site without individual sewer connections; a dump station is on-site. Private creekside sites nearby tend to be smaller and more rustic. Cell coverage is decent along the main highways but spotty in the deeper hollows. Bring bug spray, sturdy shoes for muddy creek banks, and firewood sourced locally, as Tennessee State Parks require heat-treated wood or downed wood collected inside the park to help prevent invasive pests.
