Campgrounds and RV parks near Lineville, AL

The main draw is Cheaha State Park, which sits at Alabama's highest point and offers hiking, an observation tower, a swimming lake, and connecting trails into the Talladega National Forest. The Pinhoti Trail runs through the area and links to longer backcountry routes for day hikers and backpackers. Lake Wedowee, east of Lineville, is the local hub for bass fishing, pontoon rentals, and swimming. Alabama Gold Camp, near Crooked Creek, is one of the few spots in the region where visitors can pan and sluice for gold on-site, which tends to appeal to families with kids. Talladega Superspeedway is roughly forty-five minutes northwest and hosts NASCAR race weekends that draw heavy RV traffic through the county. Small-town stops in Ashland, Heflin, and Lineville cover groceries, fuel, and basic supplies.

Spring and fall are the strongest seasons for RV travel in this part of Alabama. March through May brings mild days, dogwood and mountain laurel bloom, and comfortable overnight temperatures for tent campers traveling with an RV group. Fall foliage on Cheaha Mountain typically peaks in late October and into early November, and weekend sites at the state park fill early during that window; peak-foliage camping at Cheaha has been known to sell out within hours of opening a year in advance. Summer is hot and humid, with afternoon thunderstorms common. Lake Wedowee and Cheaha Lake are the primary ways to cool off, and shaded sites are worth booking well in advance. Biting insects are active from late spring through early fall. Winter is mild by northern standards but can bring freezing nights and occasional ice on the mountain roads leading up to Cheaha. Some smaller private parks reduce hours or amenities in the off-season, so calling ahead is recommended. A three-night minimum stay applies on Talladega race weekends and all holidays at Cheaha, which affects planning around late April and early October.

At Cheaha State Park, campers can choose from 77 full-hookup sites, 26 primitive sites, 28 rustic tent sites, a primitive group campground, and safari-style glamping tents. The mountain roads leading up to the park include steep grades and tight turns, which is worth noting for longer rigs and towables. Reservation confirmations include a gate code, and guests may set up at their site first but must return to the Mountain Store to complete check-in and pick up a post pass and vehicle pass. Private parks near Lake Wedowee tend to be smaller and quieter, with a mix of pull-through and back-in sites. Big Fish At Wedowee RV Park is a small family-owned campground, so expectations should sit closer to a residential-style stay than a resort. Cell service is reliable in town and along main highways but can drop off inside the national forest and on the mountain.
