Campgrounds near Lipscomb
Lipscomb sits in Jefferson County just southwest of Birmingham, putting RV travelers within a short drive of central Alabama's largest cluster of state park and private campgrounds. Interstates 20, 59, and 65 all pass within a few miles, which makes the area a practical overnight stop as well as a base for multi-day trips.
The closest full-service option is Hoover RV Park at the Hoover Met Complex, a paved pull-through park adjacent to a sports and event venue. Birmingham South RV Park in nearby Pelham offers a more traditional campground layout with a seasonal pool and family amenities. For a state-park experience, Oak Mountain State Park anchors the region with about 150 sites near Beaver Lake, and the Equestrian - Oak Mountain State Park loop adds 12 full-hookup sites with horse stalls.
About thirty minutes west along I-20/59, Tannehill Ironworks Historical State Park adds another large campground on Roupes Creek with roughly 195 improved sites across three loops plus a separate primitive tent area.
Things to do near Lipscomb
Oak Mountain State Park is the outdoor centerpiece of the area, covering roughly 11,861 acres with multiple lakes, two swim beaches, an 18-hole golf course, marina rentals, mountain biking, an archery range, a BMX track, and the Alabama Wildlife Center. Peavine Falls and the Tree Top Nature Trail are popular short hikes for families.
Tannehill Ironworks Historical State Park pairs shaded trails along Roupes Creek with the remains of Civil War era iron furnaces, a working gristmill, restored pioneer cabins, and a miniature railroad that runs through the pines. Trade Days and seasonal festivals draw large crowds.
Closer to Lipscomb, downtown Birmingham puts the Civil Rights Institute, Sloss Furnaces National Historic Landmark, Regions Field, and the Birmingham Zoo within easy reach for a day trip from camp.

Central Alabama has a humid subtropical climate, so the RV season effectively runs year round. Peak demand at Oak Mountain State Park runs from March through October, with weekends and major holidays requiring a two-night minimum stay and holiday weekends filling months ahead.
Spring is the wettest stretch and also the primary severe weather season, with tornado risk highest from March through May and a secondary peak in November. Summer brings frequent afternoon thunderstorms, high humidity, and daytime highs regularly reaching the low nineties Fahrenheit, so shaded sites and hookups for air conditioning are worth prioritizing.
Fall cools off after the first weeks of September and is generally the driest and most comfortable season for camping, with August through October the driest stretch of the year. Winters are mild but can dip near freezing at night; Oak Mountain, Tannehill, and the private parks stay open year round, and off-season demand is much lower outside of event weekends.
How to book
Oak Mountain State Park uses the Alabama State Parks reservation system at reserve.alapark.com or by phone. Sites can be booked up to one year in advance, maximum stay is 14 nights (extended to 31 nights from November 1 through March 31), and a non-refundable reservation fee applies per site. Check-in is 2 p.m. and check-out is 11 a.m.
Tannehill Ironworks Historical State Park operates its campground on a first-come, first-served basis with no advance site reservations, though special-event weekends such as Trade Days and the Halloween festival fill quickly, and calling ahead for availability is recommended.
Hoover RV Park and Birmingham South RV Park take reservations directly through their websites or by phone, and booking ahead is recommended around SEC baseball tournaments and other Hoover Met Complex events.
What to expect
Hoover RV Park is a paved pull-through layout inside a sports complex: level, easy in and out, full hookups with Wi-Fi, but limited shade and minimal on-site recreation beyond the adjacent Finley Center walking track and playground.
Oak Mountain State Park reopened in 2024 after a full campground rebuild and offers about 57 full-hookup 50/30-amp RV sites plus water-and-electric and tent sites out of roughly 150 total, with bathhouses, a camp store, a playground, laundry, and a dump station. Sites sit in rolling wooded terrain near Beaver Lake. The Equestrian loop adds 12 full-hookup sites with horse stalls.
Tannehill offers three campground loops on gravel roads. Loops 1 and 2 are full hookup and can feel tightly spaced but are heavily shaded, loop 3 is water and electric only, and cell service is spotty. Quiet hours are enforced at both state parks and pets must stay leashed.
