Camping near Locust Fork, Alabama
Locust Fork sits in Blount County in north-central Alabama, roughly a 40-minute drive north of Birmingham. The town lies along the Locust Fork of the Black Warrior River, and campgrounds within a short drive range from developed state park sites to rustic mountain-top climbing camps and full-hookup RV parks.
The closest public option is Rickwood Caverns State Park in northern Blount County, which combines guided cave tours with a small developed campground. Horse Pens 40, on Chandler Mountain in nearby St. Clair County, offers primitive camping, rustic cabins, and a limited number of RV hookups around one of the most well-known sandstone bouldering fields in the Southeast. Carson Village Moblie Home and RV Park sits closer to the immediate Locust Fork area for travelers who want a straightforward hookup site.
For RV renters willing to extend the drive, Greensport RV Park & Campground on the Coosa River and Cullman Campground to the north broaden the mix with waterfront and full-service options.
Things to do near Locust Fork
Cave tours are the signature activity at Rickwood Caverns State Park. The park offers guided walks through limestone formations dated to roughly 260 million years, an underground pool, a spring-fed Olympic-sized swimming pool, short hiking routes such as the Fossil Mountain Trail, and a playground. Tours are guided and can sell out, so booking ahead is recommended.
Horse Pens 40 draws climbers from across the country to its concentrated sandstone boulder field, and the property also has walking trails, picnic areas, and a large covered pavilion used for bluegrass festivals and gatherings. Visitors who do not climb can still wander the rock formations, and a few boulders have carved steps to the top for a view over Chandler Mountain.
On-water options include paddling stretches of the Locust Fork River, fishing the Coosa River near Greensport, and day trips to nearby Smith Lake.

March through May brings mild days, blooming hardwood forests, and the region's severe-storm season, with frequent afternoon thunderstorms and tornado risk across northern and central Alabama. October and early November deliver crisp mornings, drier weather, and hardwood color across Blount and St. Clair counties.
Summer is hot and humid, with highs typically near 90 degrees Fahrenheit in July and frequent afternoon storms. Summer weekends are the busiest at Rickwood Caverns, and the seasonal swimming pool is the main draw. Showers at the state park operate during warmer months and are closed from November through February.
Winter is mild by North American standards but wet, with occasional freezes and December often the wettest month. Bouldering at Horse Pens 40 is best in cooler months, when the sandstone holds are stickiest through fall, winter, and early spring. Some amenities scale back off-season.
How to book campgrounds near Locust Fork
Rickwood Caverns State Park is part of the Alabama State Parks system. Sites can be reserved through the ADCNR reservation portal at reserve.alapark.com, where advance reservations are accepted up to one year ahead, or by calling the park office directly. Cave tour tickets have limited capacity and should be reserved separately in advance, especially on weekends and holidays.
Horse Pens 40 is privately operated and is transitioning to pre-paid reservation camping. Guests are asked to call the park ahead of arrival to arrange a site and pay the first night to hold a cabin.
Carson Village Moblie Home and RV Park, Greensport RV Park & Campground, and Cullman Campground each handle bookings independently through their own offices. Weekends between April and October fill first, so reserve as far ahead as possible for holiday travel.
What to expect on arrival
Rickwood Caverns offers roughly a dozen developed sites with electric and water hookups, several sized for larger trailers and motor homes, plus a dump station. There are no individual sewer hookups. Restrooms are on site, and showers operate seasonally, closing November through February. Sites sit relatively close together with limited privacy.
Horse Pens 40 is more rustic. Primitive tent camping, rustic cabins, and a limited number of RV hookups with 30-amp electric and water are available, along with bathhouses, hot showers, a country store, and a large covered pavilion. RV drivers should follow the park's posted directions rather than GPS, which can route large rigs up a steep grade.
Carson Village and the other private parks in the area are typical hookup-style RV parks with pull-through and back-in sites. Cell service is generally reliable along the U.S. 231 and I-65 corridors and can be patchy on the ridges.
