Central Alabama has a humid subtropical climate. Late March through May and again from mid-September through early November tend to be the most comfortable camping windows.
Peak season at Oak Mountain State Park runs from March to October, and beach concessions plus canoe, kayak, and boat rentals are only available over the summer. Summer highs regularly reach the low 90s Fahrenheit, so shaded sites and full hookups with air conditioning make a real difference for RV renters.
The park and campgrounds are open year round, so winter is an option when crowds are minimal, but pack warm clothing since overnight temperatures can dip close to freezing. Central Alabama also sits in the Dixie Alley severe-weather corridor, with tornado risk peaking in spring and again in late fall.

Oak Mountain State Park and its Equestrian campground are booked through the Alabama State Parks system. Reservations can be made by calling 205-620-2527 or through the online portal at reserve.alapark.com, and full payment is charged to a credit card on all reservations. Advanced reservations may be made up to one year in advance, and the maximum stay for camping is 14 nights.

What to expect on arrival
At Oak Mountain State Park, campground check-in is 2 PM and check-out is 11 AM, and a day-use entrance fee applies on top of the campsite reservation. The park entrance gate is manned 24 hours a day, and only registered guests are allowed into the park during park hours. RV sites include options with 50-amp service, water, and sewer, plus water-and-electric-only and primitive sites.
Expect wooded, rolling terrain with some tight interior roads, so measure your rig before booking a specific loop; sites range from about 25 to 60 feet. Dogs are allowed on a leash no longer than 6 feet, are not allowed in any building or beach area, and owners must clean up after them and keep them quiet during quiet hours. Cell coverage across the Birmingham metro is generally strong, though reviewers note it can be spotty inside the state-park campground.
