Campgrounds and RV parks near McKenzie, AL

Water recreation drives most trips. Point A Lake and Gantt Lake, both on the Conecuh River drainage in Covington County, are the main draws for fishing, boating, and swimming. Anglers target bass, crappie, and catfish in Point A Lake, and both lakes have public boat ramps near the campgrounds. The Conecuh National Forest covers 83,000 acres in southern Alabama along the Alabama-Florida line in Covington and Escambia counties. The Conecuh Trail winds about 20 miles through Alabama's coastal plain. Visitors also fish at Open Pond and swim at Blue Lake Recreation Area, and the longleaf pine ecosystem supports red-cockaded woodpeckers and pitcher plants. Off-road riders head to Boggs and Boulders LLC, which offers 2,000 acres of trails, mud, multiple styles of terrain, and a natural cool pool with rope swing. ATVs, side-by-sides, dirt bikes, and 4x4s are all welcome.

South Alabama has a humid subtropical climate with hot summers and mild winters. Spring, from March through May, is a popular window for RV travel: weather is most enjoyable during March, April, May, October, and November, with comfortable temperatures, and lake water warms up by late April. Weekends at private RV parks around Andalusia fill quickly on holidays, so reserve early. Summer is hot and humid, with afternoon thunderstorms common from June through August. July is the hottest month at about 34°C (93°F). Lake swimming, shaded campsites, and full-hookup power for air conditioning become essential. Atlantic hurricane season runs June through November, with peak activity in August and September. Coastal storms can push heavy rain and wind inland to Butler and Covington counties. Fall brings cooler nights, fewer bugs, and lower humidity, making September through November a strong second season for camping. October is the driest month, with around 72 mm of rainfall. Winter is mild, with occasional freezes. Point A Lake RV Park is open year-round, with the busiest days being Memorial Day, the Fourth of July, and Labor Day, though some seasonal amenities such as swim beaches close from late fall through early spring.

Expect a rural, small-town feel. McKenzie itself has limited services, so most RV travelers stock up in Greenville, Georgiana, or Andalusia before heading to their site. Cell coverage is generally reliable along Interstate 65 and around the larger lakes but can drop inside the national forest. Campsites near the lakes tend to be a mix of gravel, red dirt, and grass. Sites can include a mix of gravel, red dirt, and partial asphalt surfaces, and some may not be perfectly level, so leveling blocks are worth packing. Most private parks offer 30- and 50-amp service, water, and sewer; some include cable and Wi-Fi. Pull-through sites exist but are limited at smaller parks. Wildlife is part of the experience. Deer, wild turkey, and alligators live in the region's ponds and swamps, and campers should keep food secured and pets leashed. Summer brings mosquitoes and biting flies, especially near still water, so bring repellent.
