Camping near Moody, Alabama
Moody sits in St. Clair County along I-20, about twenty miles east of Birmingham and within easy reach of Logan Martin Lake, the Coosa River chain, and the ridges of the southern Appalachians. The location makes it a practical base for RV travelers who want a small-town setting with quick highway access to metro amenities, state parks, and lakefront recreation.
Campground options nearby range from full-service RV resorts to a large state park campground and a small historic mill park. Oak Mountain State Park is Alabama's largest state park at roughly 9,940 acres, with a campground that includes RV sites with full hookups, water and electric sites, and tent sites near Beaver Lake. Logan Landing RV Resort and Cabins sits on Logan Martin Lake to the east, while Carson Village Moblie Home and RV Park and Safe Harbor RV Park serve travelers looking for closer-in sites. Kymulga Grist Mill and Park adds a smaller, historic-park option to the south.
Most of these destinations are within a thirty to sixty minute drive of Moody, making it feasible to base at one campground and day-trip to others.
Things to do around Moody
Oak Mountain State Park anchors most outdoor plans, spreading across nearly 10,000 acres just outside Birmingham. Trails cover hiking, mountain biking, and horseback riding, and the park includes a demonstration farm, a golf course, a marina, and the Alabama Wildlife Center rehabilitation facility. Beaver Lake and Lake Tranquility support fishing, paddling, and swimming in season.
Logan Martin Lake, reached via Logan Landing RV Resort and Cabins, is the main draw for boaters and anglers east of Moody. Kymulga Grist Mill and Park preserves a working nineteenth-century mill and covered bridge with short walking paths along Talladega Creek.
For rainy days or a change of pace, Birmingham offers the Civil Rights Institute, the McWane Science Center, the Birmingham Zoo, and Regions Field for minor-league baseball, all within a short drive west on I-20.

Central Alabama has a humid subtropical climate with mild winters, hot summers, and rain spread through the year. Peak camping season at Oak Mountain State Park runs from March through October. Spring brings comfortable temperatures, blooming dogwoods, and the region's wettest months, along with the peak of severe-storm season in April. Fall delivers the driest, most stable weather and moderate crowds.
Summer is the busiest stretch on the water. Beach concessions and canoe, kayak, and boat rentals are available over the summer at Oak Mountain, and lake campgrounds on Logan Martin fill quickly on weekends. Heat and humidity peak in July and August, and afternoon thunderstorms are common.
Winter camping is a workable option for RVers who want quiet sites and lower demand. The Oak Mountain campground stays open year round, and select Alabama State Parks allow longer maximum stays from November through March. Hard freezes are brief, but overnight lows in the thirties are normal, so cold-weather gear is worth packing.
How to book campsites near Moody
Oak Mountain State Park uses the Alabama State Parks reservation system at reserve.alapark.com, or reservations can be made by phone with the park office. Out-of-state visitors can book up to 12 months in advance, and Alabama residents can book up to 13 months in advance through the Alabama Residents Advanced Reservation Window, which matches the zip code on the payment card to an in-state zip code. Holiday weekends must be reserved 3 months in advance, and weekends and holidays during peak season typically require a two-night minimum stay.
Maximum stay for camping is 14 nights, extended to 31 nights from November 1 through March 31 at select parks. Campground check-in is 2 PM and check-out is 11 AM.
Private campgrounds including Logan Landing RV Resort and Cabins, Carson Village Moblie Home and RV Park, and Safe Harbor RV Park take reservations directly by phone or through their websites. Kymulga Grist Mill and Park is best booked by contacting the park office.
What to expect on arrival
Sites at Oak Mountain vary noticeably by loop. Loop A provides more spacious, wooded sites with better privacy, while Loop B packs larger RVs closer together in an open setting. Full hookups with 50-amp service are available on many RV sites, and the campground has bathhouses with hot showers, laundry facilities, a camp store, and an RV dump station. The campground sits more than five miles inside the main entrance along winding park roads, so plan extra time on arrival day.
Private resorts such as Logan Landing RV Resort and Cabins and Safe Harbor RV Park lean toward paved or graveled pads with full hookups and lake access. Cell coverage is generally reliable near Moody and along I-20, but can drop inside wooded park loops. Bring insect repellent from spring through early fall, and expect gate and quiet hours to be enforced at state park sites.

rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Moody,%20AlabamaDo I need a special license to rent an RV in Moody, AL?
Good news: your regular Alabama driver's license (or any valid US or international license) is all you need to rent an RV in Moody, AL. No Commercial Driver's License (CDL) or special RV endorsement is required in Alabama for personal-use motorhomes under 26,000 pounds Gross Vehicle Weight Rating (GVWR), which covers virtually every RV on RVezy. You'll need to be 25 or older, and RVezy verifies your ID right through the platform during checkout. Visiting from outside the US? Bring your home-country license plus an International Driving Permit (IDP) and you're set. Most first-time renters are surprised how quick the approval process is, so you can focus on planning your Logan Martin Lake sunset instead of paperwork.
alea.gov/dps/driver-license/driver-license-informationWhat protection is included when I rent an RV in Moody, AL?
Every RV rental in Moody, AL booked through RVezy includes a renter protection plan and 24/7 roadside assistance, so you can head out on I-20 toward Talladega or Birmingham with real peace of mind. During checkout you choose your level of coverage (not the host), and the protection plan helps cover damages to the RV while you're on the road. Roadside help is one call away if you get a flat near Logan Martin Lake or need a jump start at Oak Mountain State Park. Review the coverage options at checkout and pick the level that matches your trip distance, especially if you're planning a longer RV road trip from Moody into Tennessee or Georgia.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/34008759079835-RVezy-renter-protection-plans-in-detailWhat's the cancellation policy if my Moody RV trip plans change?
Booking is low-risk: RVezy sets the cancellation policy (not individual hosts), and refund eligibility depends on how far out your trip start date is when you cancel. RVezy support can also help with unexpected events, which matters in Alabama where spring thunderstorms and tornado watches do happen. If something changes, contact RVezy and they will walk you through your options. Lock in your dates early for an Oak Mountain State Park weekend, since holiday weekends fill up about three months out, and the clear cancellation policy means you can book confidently.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360037736674-Understanding-the-cancellation-policy-for-guestsCan I bring my dog on a pet-friendly RV rental in Moody?
Yes. Plenty of pet-friendly RV rental Moody options are available on RVezy: just toggle the Pet-Friendly filter when you search and you'll see motorhomes and travel trailers whose owners welcome four-legged co-pilots. Moody is a great pet base because Oak Mountain State Park (about 30 miles southwest) allows leashed dogs on trails and in the campground, and the park has a dedicated bark park and dog beach at Double Oak Lake. Some hosts charge a small pet cleaning fee (typically $25 to $75 per trip), which you'll see clearly listed before booking. Message the host about your pet's size and ask if they provide a pet bed or food bowls, since many Moody hosts go the extra mile.
alapark.com/parks/oak-mountain-state-parkCan the RV be delivered to my campsite in Moody?
Yes, RV delivery Moody service is one of the most popular options on RVezy, especially if it's your first time renting an RV. Many Moody-area hosts will tow the trailer or drive the motorhome straight to your campsite at Oak Mountain State Park, Logan Landing RV Resort on Logan Martin Lake, or your driveway, then level it, hook up power and water, and walk you through every system before they leave. Delivery fees typically run $2 to $5 per mile from the host's location, and some hosts offer free delivery within a set radius. Filter by Delivery on RVezy, then message the host with your campground name so they can confirm the route and quote your exact delivery cost.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Moody,%20AlabamaHow far can I travel on an RV road trip from Moody, AL?
You're in a sweet spot for an RV road trip from Moody, since I-20 and I-59 put incredible destinations within easy reach. Popular routes include Cheaha State Park (Alabama's highest point at 2,407 feet, about 50 miles east), Talladega Superspeedway (about 35 miles east), the Gulf Coast at Gulf Shores (about 280 miles south), Great Smoky Mountains National Park (about 230 miles northeast), and Nashville, Tennessee (about 200 miles north). Each Moody host sets their own mileage policy, with options ranging from 100 free miles per night up to RV rental with unlimited mileage. If you're planning a longer loop, filter by unlimited-mileage listings or message hosts upfront to confirm a higher daily allowance.
alapark.com/parks/cheaha-resort-state-parkWhere are the best campgrounds near Moody, AL?
Some of the best campgrounds near Moody offer everything from full-hookup lakeside sites to wooded state-park loops. Top picks include Oak Mountain State Park Campground in Pelham (about 30 miles southwest, with 85 improved RV sites and a dump station), Logan Landing RV and Cabin Resort on Logan Martin Lake (lakefront full-hookup sites with a pool and marina), Lakeside Landing RV Park and Marina on Logan Martin Lake, Birmingham South RV Park in Pelham (big-rig friendly), and Talladega Grand Prix Raceway RV sites for race weekends. Book Oak Mountain through reserve.alapark.com up to one year in advance, and reserve holiday weekends at least three months out because they fill fast.
alapark.com/parks/oak-mountain-state-parkWhen is the best time of year for RV camping in Moody, AL?
The sweet spot for RV camping Moody is March through May and September through early November, when daytime highs sit in a comfortable 65F to 80F range and humidity drops. Summer (June to August) is hot and humid with average highs near 90F and a heat index that can climb above 100F, so look for a host whose RV has a strong roof air conditioner. Winters are short and mild with average lows around 35F and highs in the low 50s, making this one of the few US regions where year-round RVing is genuinely comfortable. October is a local favorite in Moody because fall color at Oak Mountain peaks and campground rates often soften after Labor Day.
weather.gov/bmx/I'm a first-time renter, will I know how to use the RV?
Yes, and this is one of the biggest reasons people choose RVezy for their first time renting an RV in Moody. Every host provides a hands-on orientation at pickup (or at delivery if you choose that option), walking you through the generator, water and waste tanks, slide-outs, propane, leveling, and the awning. Most Moody hosts also send a short walkthrough video or printed cheat sheet, and they're a text message away during your trip if anything feels confusing. RVezy's 24/7 support and roadside assistance are also one tap away. Pro tip: ask your host to demonstrate the dump-station process at pickup, because hooking up at Oak Mountain or Logan Landing is the part that intimidates first-timers most, and seeing it once removes all the mystery.
alapark.com/parks/oak-mountain-state-park/campingWhat happens if the RV breaks down during my trip?
You're covered. Every motorhome rental Moody and travel trailer booked through RVezy includes 24/7 roadside assistance as part of the protection plan, so a flat tire, dead battery, or mechanical issue on I-20 between Moody and Birmingham is just a phone call away from being handled. The roadside team can dispatch tow trucks, tire service, jump starts, and lockout help anywhere in Alabama. Your host is also typically reachable by text or phone. Save the RVezy support number in your phone before you leave the driveway and snap a photo of the VIN and license plate so you can report any issue in under two minutes.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/34008759079835-RVezy-renter-protection-plans-in-detailCan I take my RV rental from Moody across state lines or into Canada?
Yes, interstate travel from Moody is wide open, and most hosts allow trips into Tennessee, Georgia, Mississippi, Florida, and the Carolinas, which are all within an easy day's drive. Travel into Canada may be allowed depending on the host and their insurance, so message the host directly before booking if you're planning a northern route. Travel into Mexico is not permitted on any RVezy rental because insurance and protection coverage do not extend across that border. Popular routes from Moody include the Smoky Mountains loop through Chattanooga and Gatlinburg, the Gulf Coast run to Gulf Shores, and the Music Highway up to Nashville, so confirm your mileage allowance with the host upfront.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360039340074-Insurance-coverage-validityHow much should I budget for fuel on my Moody RV trip?
Fuel is one of the more predictable parts of budgeting an RV rental in Alabama because the state consistently ranks among the cheapest in the country for gas, typically 15 to 30 cents below the national average thanks to low state fuel taxes and Gulf Coast pipeline access. Expect roughly 7 to 10 miles per gallon (MPG) for a Class A, 10 to 14 MPG for a Class C, and 12 to 18 MPG for a travel trailer being towed. For a 300-mile weekend loop to Cheaha State Park and back, budget around $100 to $180 in fuel. Pro tip: fill up along I-65 or I-20 in the Birmingham suburbs (including Moody and Leeds), where trucking competition keeps prices among the lowest in the state.
gasprices.aaa.com/?state=ALHow far in advance should I book a campground near Moody?
For the best campgrounds near Moody, book as early as you can. Oak Mountain State Park allows reservations up to one year in advance through reserve.alapark.com, and holiday weekends (Memorial Day, July 4th, Labor Day) should be locked in at least three months out because they consistently sell out. Logan Landing and Lakeside Landing on Logan Martin Lake fill quickly for summer weekends, and Talladega-area parks book up months ahead for NASCAR race weekends in spring and fall. Alabama State Parks charge a small non-refundable reservation fee per site. If you strike out at Oak Mountain, check midweek dates first, then look at Birmingham South RV Park in Pelham as a strong backup.
alapark.com/parks/oak-mountain-state-parkWhat are the driving conditions like around Moody, AL?
Driving an RV around Moody is refreshingly easy compared to most metro areas. You're sitting in the foothills of the Appalachians at about 676 feet elevation, with I-20 running right through town as a flat, four-lane interstate that connects you to Birmingham (20 miles west) and Atlanta (140 miles east). Local roads are gentle and rolling rather than steep. Watch out for summer afternoon thunderstorms (May through August), which can drop heavy rain quickly, and stay weather-aware in spring tornado season by keeping a NOAA Weather Radio handy. Pro tip: if you're nervous about Birmingham city driving, skip downtown and take I-459 around the south side, or book RV delivery Moody service so the host handles the highway miles for you.
weather.gov/bmx/What amenities can I expect at campgrounds near Moody?
Campgrounds around Moody are well-developed, with most offering 30/50-amp electric, water, and sewer hookups, plus dump stations for travelers passing through. Oak Mountain State Park has multiple bathhouses, a camp store, and a dump station available for a small fee for non-registered campers. Logan Landing and Lakeside Landing on Logan Martin Lake add pools, marinas, laundry, and lakefront sites. You can also find dump stations at major truck stops along I-20 if you need to dump between campgrounds. Top off your fresh water tank at your campsite spigot before checkout (not at the dump station) and always use a dedicated drinking-water hose to keep your tank tasting clean.
alapark.com/parks/oak-mountain-state-parkWhat's inside a typical RV rental in Moody?
Most RVs on RVezy in Moody come ready to roll with everything you need: a full kitchen (fridge, freezer, stove, microwave, sink), a bathroom with toilet and shower, a queen or king bed plus convertible dinette and sofa beds (typically sleeping 4 to 8 people), roof air conditioning that's essential for Alabama summers, a furnace for cool nights, and seatbelts for safe travel. Many listings also include a TV, Bluetooth stereo, outdoor awning, camping chairs, and a generator for off-grid power. WiFi is host-dependent, so check the listing or message the host. Filter Moody listings by sleeps count and add-ons you actually want (linens, kitchen kit, outdoor gear) since skipping bundled extras can save you money on your Moody RV trip.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Moody,%20AlabamaWhat add-ons and pickup options are available for a campervan rental Moody?
Moody hosts offer a great range of add-ons to customize your campervan rental Moody or motorhome rental Moody experience. Common extras include linen and towel packages ($25 to $75), kitchen kits with pots and dishes ($25 to $50), outdoor gear bundles like camping chairs and grills ($30 to $75), generators for boondocking, and bike racks. Pickup is typically at the host's home (often in St. Clair or Jefferson County), or you can choose RV delivery to Oak Mountain, Logan Landing, or your driveway. Mileage policies vary, usually 100 to 200 free miles per day with extra miles at $0.30 to $0.50 each, and many hosts offer RV rental with unlimited mileage. Bundle delivery, linens, and a kitchen kit so you can show up empty-handed and start your trip relaxed.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Moody,%20AlabamaHow does the security deposit and payment work on RVezy?
Payment on RVezy is simple and secure: you pay through the RVezy platform when you book (never directly to the host), and your money is held until your trip begins, which protects both you and the owner. Each host sets a refundable security deposit (typically a few hundred to a couple thousand dollars for Moody-area RVs) that's held before pickup and released after the trip once the RV is returned in the same condition. Do a quick walkaround video at pickup and drop-off, capturing any existing scratches, the mileage, the generator hours, and the fuel and propane levels, so you have a clear record and your deposit is released back to you smoothly.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360038106214-How-the-security-deposit-worksWhere can I park my RV overnight in Moody besides a campground?
Knowing where to park an RV in Moody beyond a traditional campground is part of being a savvy traveler. Alabama generally does not allow overnight camping at interstate rest areas, so plan a real stop instead. Some Walmart and Cracker Barrel locations along I-20 in the Birmingham metro allow one-night RV parking, but you must call the store manager first to confirm because policies vary by location. Harvest Hosts members can also overnight at participating wineries and farms around the region. For the easiest stress-free option, book a night at Birmingham South RV Park or Oak Mountain State Park for around $30 to $50 with hookups included and skip the parking-lot guesswork entirely.
