Camping near Mount Olive, Alabama
Mount Olive is an unincorporated community in Jefferson County on the northwest side of the Birmingham metro area. RV travelers use it as a base for reaching two state parks within about a 30 to 40 minute drive, plus private RV options closer to town. Rickwood Caverns State Park features a miracle mile of underground caverns with 260-million-year-old limestone formations and cave tours, plus modern campsites, a swimming pool, picnic area, and playground.
South of the city, Alabama's largest state park spreads across 9,940 acres just outside Birmingham, with the campground tucked more than five miles from the main entrance along winding park roads. That park, Oak Mountain State Park, is the main draw for longer stays and offers the widest range of hookups and activities in the region. Closer in, Carson Village Moblie Home and RV Park and Hoover RV Park provide simpler, full-service urban options for travelers who want quick highway access rather than a park setting.
Both state parks fall under the Alabama Department of Conservation and Natural Resources and share a single booking portal, which simplifies trip planning across multiple stops.
Things to do near Mount Olive
At Rickwood Caverns State Park, the main attraction is the guided cave tour through the illuminated limestone formations. Tours can sell out on busy weekends, so reservations are recommended. The caves stay a comfortable 60 degrees year round, 175 feet below the surface, and the park also has an Olympic-size swimming pool, picnic areas, a playground, and short hiking trails.
Oak Mountain State Park is built for active families. The park has hiking and mountain biking trails, lakes for swimming, fishing, kayaking, canoeing, and paddle boating, plus an aviary rehabilitation center, BMX area, horse riding facilities, golf course, and an amphitheater that hosts concerts. Riders staying at Equestrian - Oak Mountain State Park have direct access to the horse trail network.

Spring and fall are the strongest windows for RV travel around Mount Olive. Daytime highs are comfortable, trails are dry, and cave and lake activities are open. Birmingham experiences a humid subtropical climate, characterized by hot summers and cool winters with strong seasonal temperature contrasts; the area is wet overall, with rainfall spread fairly evenly throughout the year, though spring is typically the wettest season. Severe thunderstorms are most common from March through May, so watch forecasts and choose sites with sturdy tree cover in mind.
Summer brings heat, humidity, and afternoon storms, but it is also when the lake beaches, wakeboarding, and swimming pools are in peak use. Weekends fill early at Oak Mountain, and holiday weekends require the most lead time.
Winter is the quiet season. Trails and cave tours generally stay open, though some seasonal amenities scale back. At Rickwood Caverns, comfort facilities include restrooms, seasonal showers (closed November to February), and a dump station, so cold-weather campers should plan for reduced services.
How to book campsites
The two nearby state parks use the Alabama State Parks reservation system at reserve.alapark.com, operated by the Alabama Department of Conservation and Natural Resources. Rickwood Caverns and Oak Mountain both list availability on this portal, and reservations can also be made by park phone.
Book early, especially for warm-weather weekends. People with an Alabama zip code can make reservations 13 months in advance, and users from out-of-state can make reservations 12 months in advance. Reservations require a two-night minimum stay, and reservations for holiday weekends must be at least three months in advance. A non-refundable reservation fee applies per site.
Private parks such as Carson Village Moblie Home and RV Park and Hoover RV Park are booked directly with the operator and typically have more flexible arrival windows.
What to expect on site
Oak Mountain has the broadest RV infrastructure. The campground features 150 total campsites, and 84 are designated RV sites; of these, 57 have full hookups and 27 have water and electrical hookups. Loop A provides more spacious, wooded sites with better privacy, while Loop B packs larger RVs closer together in an open setting. Cell service can run spotty in the park.
Rickwood Caverns is smaller and more rustic. The campground offers 13 water-and-electric RV sites (30/50 amp) suitable for trailers up to 40 ft and 5 primitive tent sites. Private parks near town lean utilitarian, with level pads, full hookups, and easy interstate access, but without the trail-and-lake amenities of the state parks.
