Camping near New Site, Alabama
New Site sits in Tallapoosa County in east-central Alabama, within easy driving distance of Lake Martin, the Tallapoosa River, and the southern edge of Talladega National Forest. The area combines rolling Piedmont terrain with reservoir shoreline, giving RV travelers a mix of large state-park campgrounds, small private RV parks, and specialty prospecting camps.
The closest options include Franks Point Of View LLC and Real Nice & Easy RV Park for straightforward hookup stays, while Wind Creek State Park on Lake Martin offers one of the largest state-operated campgrounds in the United States. Big Fish At Wedowee RV Park serves travelers heading toward Lake Wedowee, and Alabama Gold Camp, roughly ten miles from Lineville, adds gold panning and creek access to a rustic campground.
Alexander City lies a short drive west and provides groceries, fuel, propane, and RV supplies. Wedowee and Lineville cover similar basics to the north and east, making New Site a practical hub for lake days, forest drives, and small-town stops.
Things to do near New Site
Lake Martin anchors most itineraries. Wind Creek State Park provides swimming beaches, a marina with boat rentals, a zipline canopy tour, and roughly 30 miles of multi-use hiking and biking trails. Anglers target crappie, bluegill, and striped bass from a 210-foot fishing pier that stays open around the clock. Families often mix beach time with the park's archery range and playgrounds.
Prospectors head to Alabama Gold Camp near Lineville, which sits in the heart of the state's gold belt and permits panning, sluicing, dredging, high-banking, and metal detecting along miles of creek. Red garnets, citrine, and fossils also turn up on the property.
Horseshoe Bend National Military Park, Cherokee Ridge Alpine Trail, and downtown Alexander City add half-day options when travelers want a break from the water.

Spring and fall are the most comfortable seasons for RV travel in this part of Alabama. Daytime highs sit in the 70s Fahrenheit, humidity is manageable, and wildflowers and hardwood color make the Piedmont scenic. Spring also brings the wettest frontal systems and a real risk of severe thunderstorms and tornadoes, so travelers should monitor NWS Birmingham alerts and pick sites with sturdy tree cover away from flood-prone creeks.
Summer is hot, humid, and busy. Lake Martin weekends fill quickly at Wind Creek State Park, and holiday weekends often require booking several months ahead given the 586 sites. Afternoon thunderstorms are routine, and shaded or waterfront sites go first.
Fall cools gradually and brings drier, clearer weather, with October historically the driest month of the year. Winters are mild but can drop sharply during Arctic outbreaks; some private parks reduce services, while Wind Creek stays open year-round with quieter weekdays.
How to book campgrounds near New Site
Wind Creek State Park uses the Alabama State Parks reservation system at reserve.alapark.com, with phone booking available through the park office. Reservations are strongly encouraged, especially for waterfront sites and holiday weekends. Some premium waterfront sites carry a seven-night minimum, and check-in is 2:00 p.m.
Private parks in the area, including Franks Point Of View LLC, Real Nice & Easy RV Park, and Big Fish At Wedowee RV Park, generally take reservations by phone or through their own websites and third-party platforms. Alabama Gold Camp asks that visitors call ahead to reserve prospecting shacks and campsites.
Book Wind Creek several months in advance for summer and Halloween weekends, which are among the park's busiest.
What to expect on the ground
Expect classic Piedmont scenery: pine and hardwood forest, red clay, rolling ridges, and quiet county roads. Cell coverage is reliable near Alexander City and along US 280 but can drop off on backroads into the national forest and around Alabama Gold Camp, where the on-site general store provides basic amenities.
Site quality varies widely. Wind Creek offers 586 sites with water and electric, 268 with sewer, and 39 renovated sites with 60-foot concrete pads suitable for larger rigs. Private parks tend toward gravel pull-throughs with full hookups. Rustic camps can have narrow, steep gravel roads, so big-rig drivers should confirm access before arrival.
Bring insect repellent, a weather radio, and a shade or awning setup. Leash rules apply at Wind Creek, and pets must be attended at all times.

Frequently asked questions about campgrounds near New Site, AL
How much does it cost to rent an RV in New Site, AL?
RV rental in New Site, AL is one of the most affordable ways to explore Lake Martin and Tallapoosa County. Expect to pay roughly $90 to $175 per night for travel trailers, $150 to $250 for Class C motorhomes, and $200 to $375 for larger Class A rigs, depending on age and amenities. You can save by booking midweek, traveling in the shoulder seasons of April or October, and filtering for RVs offering unlimited mileage. Pro tip: booking 2 to 3 months ahead of Lake Martin's busy June through August stretch typically locks in the best rates before Horseshoe Bend visitors snap up inventory.
alabama.travel/places-to-stay/campgroundsWhat license do I need to rent an RV in New Site, Alabama?
Good news: a regular driver's license is all you need to rent an RV in New Site, Alabama. Alabama does not require a commercial driver's license (CDL) or any special endorsement for personal motorhomes or travel trailers, even larger Class A coaches. To book on RVezy you generally need to be at least 25 years old, and your ID is verified inside the platform during checkout, so there's no extra paperwork on pickup day. Visiting from overseas? Pair your home license with an International Driving Permit (IDP) from your home auto club, and you're ready to roll toward Lake Martin.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360039008774-Understanding-approved-driver-requirementsIs renting an RV in New Site safe? What protection is included?
Every RV rental in New Site booked through RVezy includes a renter protection plan and 24/7 roadside assistance, so you can focus on Lake Martin instead of the what-ifs. Renters choose a protection level (Basic, Standard, or Premium) at checkout, and each tier covers accidental damage to the RV with different deductibles and limits. Coverage is provided through RVezy's program, not a personal auto policy, but it gives meaningful financial protection for both you and the host. Pro tip: families heading to Wind Creek State Park often pick a mid-tier plan, since lakeside gravel pads and tree canopy can mean tight maneuvering.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/34008759079835-RVezy-renter-protection-plans-in-detailWhat if I need to cancel my RV rental in New Site?
Booking is low-risk: RVezy applies a standard cancellation policy to every reservation, including a grace period right after booking when you can cancel for a full refund. Cancellation terms are set by RVezy (not the individual host), and the refund amount depends on how far in advance you cancel relative to your pickup date. If a host cancels on you, RVezy issues a refund or travel credit so your trip plans stay protected. Pro tip: Lake Martin weather can shift quickly in spring, so booking early gives you the widest cancellation window if storms roll through Tallapoosa County.

Absolutely, pet-friendly RV rental in New Site is easy to find. Just toggle the Pet-Friendly filter on RVezy and you'll see hosts who welcome dogs (and often cats) with a small pet fee. Once you arrive, your pup will love the wide open shoreline at Wind Creek State Park, the shaded trails at Horseshoe Bend National Military Park (leashed on the tour road and grounds), and the lakeside grass at D.A.R.E. Power Park in nearby Jackson's Gap. Pro tip: pack a long lead and a collapsible water bowl, as Lake Martin summers regularly hit the upper 80s and dogs warm up fast on the red Alabama clay.
nps.gov/hobe/planyourvisit/pets.htmCan the RV be delivered to my campsite near New Site?
Yes, RV delivery in New Site is one of the most popular options on the platform, especially for first-timers. Many hosts will tow or drive the rig to Wind Creek State Park, Horseshoe Bend, a private Lake Martin lot, or even your driveway, then level it, hook up water and power, and walk you through every system. To find them, use the Delivery filter on RVezy and check each listing for delivery range and per-mile fees (typically $2 to $4 per mile from the host's location). Pro tip: ask your host to handle the dump and refill at trip's end too, which is a common add-on that makes your RV camping in New Site truly hands-free.
alapark.com/parks/wind-creek-state-parkHow do mileage policies work and how far can I drive from New Site?
Hosts set their own mileage policies, and you'll see the included miles and overage rate clearly on every listing, with many New Site hosts offering 100 to 150 free miles per day or even RV rental with unlimited mileage. From New Site you're perfectly positioned for short hops: Wind Creek State Park is about 20 miles south, Auburn is 45 miles southeast, Montgomery is 75 miles southwest, Birmingham is 90 miles northwest, and Atlanta is roughly 110 miles east. Pro tip: if you're planning an RV road trip from New Site to the Gulf Coast (about 250 miles to Gulf Shores), filter for unlimited mileage listings up front to keep your budget predictable.
dot.state.al.us/Where are the best campgrounds near New Site, AL?
You're spoiled for choice when it comes to RV camping in New Site. Top picks within 30 minutes include Wind Creek State Park in Alexander City (586 lakefront sites with full hookups, a marina, and a swim beach), Lake Martin Marina & RV Park, and Sandy Creek Park (an Alabama Power public access area on the north end of Lake Martin). A bit farther out, Chewacla State Park near Auburn (about 50 miles) and Cheaha State Park in the Talladega National Forest (about 60 miles north) are stellar mountain alternatives. Pro tip: Wind Creek is one of the largest state-park campgrounds in the country and books up months ahead for summer weekends.
alapark.com/parks/wind-creek-state-park/campgroundWhen is the best time of year for an RV trip to New Site?
April through early June and mid-September through October are the sweet spots for an RV trip in New Site. Daytime highs sit in the comfortable 70s to low 80s, evenings cool to the 50s and 60s for great campfire weather, and the humidity backs off compared to mid-summer. July and August are swimmable and lively on Lake Martin (highs in the upper 80s to low 90s), but you'll want a rig with strong air conditioning. Winters are mild, with daytime highs in the 50s, making December through February surprisingly pleasant for off-season campers. Pro tip: leaf-peepers should target late October at nearby Cheaha for the best fall color in Alabama.
weather.gov/bmx/climateI've never driven an RV before. Will I be okay?
You'll be in great shape, even if it's your first time renting an RV. Every RVezy host gives you a hands-on walkthrough at pickup, covering driving, leveling, the propane system, slide-outs, and dump procedures, and they stay reachable by message throughout your trip. New Site's quiet two-lane roads and the gentle approach to Wind Creek State Park are forgiving for new drivers, and the closest stretches of US-280 are wide and well-maintained. Pro tip: book a Class C motorhome rental in New Site or a smaller travel trailer for your first outing, then ask the host to demo the backup camera in the parking lot before you head out.
fmcsa.dot.gov/safety/driver-safety/cmv-driving-tips-driver-distractionWhat happens if I have a breakdown or issue on the road?
You're never on your own. Every RV rental in New Site booked through RVezy includes 24/7 roadside assistance as part of the renter protection plan, covering flat tires, dead batteries, lockouts, and towing when needed. If something more complex pops up, like a finicky water pump or a balky generator, message your host directly through the RVezy app and they can usually troubleshoot in minutes. RVezy's support team is also available before, during, and after your trip through the Help Center. Pro tip: save the roadside assistance number to your phone before leaving New Site, and snap a photo of the RV's VIN and license plate so you can share details quickly if you need help on a back road.
rvezy.com/insurance-and-protectionWhat are the best RV road trips from New Site?
New Site sits in a sweet spot for an RV road trip to several bucket-list destinations. Popular routes include Lake Martin loops via Kowaliga and Dadeville (under an hour), Auburn-Opelika for SEC football weekends (about 45 miles south), the Talladega Superspeedway and Cheaha State Park combo (about 75 miles north), Atlanta and Stone Mountain (about 110 miles east), and the Gulf Coast white-sand beaches at Gulf Shores (about 250 miles south). Note that RVezy rentals are not permitted to cross into Mexico due to insurance coverage limits. Pro tip: combine Horseshoe Bend National Military Park with a Lake Martin sunset cruise for a perfect one-tank weekend itinerary.
visitalabama.com/places-to-go/road-trips/What kind of fuel mileage should I expect, and what does gas cost?
Budgeting fuel for your motorhome rental in New Site is straightforward. Class B campervans average 18 to 22 MPG, Class C motorhomes get 8 to 12 MPG, Class A coaches return 6 to 10 MPG, and a truck pulling a travel trailer typically lands around 10 to 14 MPG. Alabama enjoys some of the lowest fuel prices in the country, often 30 to 50 cents below the national average, and you'll find reliable filling stations in Alexander City, Dadeville, and Daviston. Pro tip: top off in Alexander City before heading deep into Lake Martin country, since stations thin out quickly once you turn onto the smaller county roads near New Site.
eia.gov/petroleum/gasdiesel/How far in advance should I book a campground near New Site?
For Wind Creek State Park and other Lake Martin favorites, book your campsite 4 to 6 months ahead for summer holiday weekends (Memorial Day, Fourth of July, Labor Day) and at least 6 to 8 weeks ahead for other summer dates. Alabama State Parks use ReserveAmerica via the alapark.com reservation portal, while Alabama Power's Lake Martin public-use campgrounds and many private parks have their own online systems. Shoulder-season weekdays in April, May, September, and October are often bookable just a week or two out. Pro tip: lock in your campground first, then book your RV rental in Alabama, since the most desirable lakefront sites near New Site tend to disappear fastest.
alapark.com/reservationsWhat are the driving conditions like around New Site?
Driving an RV around New Site is refreshingly relaxed: traffic is light, the terrain is gently rolling Piedmont (no mountain passes), and the main arteries (AL-22, AL-49, and US-280) are wide and well-paved. Watch for two things specifically: tight, tree-canopied county roads heading down to Lake Martin coves (mind your awnings and slide-outs) and occasional deer crossings at dawn and dusk, especially near Horseshoe Bend. Summer thunderstorms can pop up fast in the afternoon, so plan longer drives for the morning. Pro tip: avoid driving large Class A rigs onto the smallest dirt access roads around Sandy Creek; stick to designated campground access and you'll have zero issues.
algotraffic.com/What amenities do New Site area campgrounds offer?
Most campgrounds near New Site are well equipped for stress-free RV camping in New Site. Wind Creek State Park offers full hookups (water, 30/50-amp electric, sewer at many sites), a dump station, potable water fill, bathhouses, laundry, a marina, and a camp store. Smaller Alabama Power access areas like Sandy Creek typically offer electric and water with a centralized dump. If you're boondocking on private land, you can dump and refill at Wind Creek's public dump station for a small fee. Pro tip: pack a 25-foot drinking-water hose and a 50-to-30-amp dogbone adapter, since New Site area sites mix and match hookup types depending on the loop.
alapark.com/parks/wind-creek-state-park/things-to-doWhat's actually inside a typical RV rental in New Site?
Your campervan rental in New Site or larger motorhome will come ready to camp. Expect a queen or king bed, bunks or convertible dinette for kids, a full kitchen (fridge, stove, microwave, sink), a wet or dry bathroom with shower and toilet, climate control (rooftop AC and propane furnace), and seatbelted seating for travel. Most motorhomes include a TV, many have onboard generators or solar for off-grid use, and a growing number of hosts offer mobile Wi-Fi hotspots as an add-on. Pro tip: if you're targeting a quiet weekend at a remote Lake Martin cove, prioritize a listing with a generator or solar setup so you can run the AC during Alabama's warm afternoons.
energy.gov/energysaver/rvs-and-campersWhat add-ons and pickup options should I know about?
RVezy hosts in New Site offer a buffet of helpful add-ons that make your trip easier: linens and towels ($30 to $75), kitchen kits ($25 to $50), camp chairs and outdoor rugs, bikes and kayaks, generators, and the always-popular delivery and setup. You'll pick up most rigs at the host's home in or near New Site, Alexander City, or Dadeville, or have it delivered straight to your Lake Martin campsite. Mileage policies, generator hours, and pet fees are all spelled out on each listing. Pro tip: bundle delivery with a dump/refill add-on so the RV is ready when you arrive and gone when you leave, which is the closest thing to a cheap RV rental in New Site with a luxury-hotel experience.
alabama.travel/things-to-do/outdoorsHow does payment and the security deposit work?
Payment is simple and secure: you pay through RVezy with a credit card at the time of booking, and funds are held by RVezy rather than flowing directly to the host. A refundable security deposit (typically $500 to $1,500 depending on the rig) is pre-authorized on your card before pickup and released after the host confirms the RV was returned in good condition. To avoid issues, do a video walk-around with your host at pickup and dropoff, follow the listing's mileage and generator rules, and return the RV with fuel and propane at the same level you received it. Pro tip: review the host's cleaning fee upfront, since a quick sweep and trash haul on your last morning at Wind Creek often saves you money on the final bill.
