Camping near New Union, Alabama
New Union is a small community in Etowah County in northeast Alabama, sitting between Gadsden and the Sand Mountain plateau. The area is part of the Appalachian foothills, with the Coosa River, Neely Henry Lake, and the sandstone cliffs of Lookout and Chandler mountains all within a short drive. Gadsden, the Etowah County seat, is about 56 miles northeast of Birmingham and 90 miles southwest of Chattanooga, which makes New Union a practical base for RV travelers routing between the two.
RV renters have a mix of options in the surrounding counties. Full-hookup parks cluster along the Coosa River and Big Wills Creek around Gadsden and Attalla, private lakeside resorts sit on quiet spring-fed water, and Alabama State Parks provide larger public campgrounds at Lake Guntersville and DeSoto. Bouldering camps on Chandler Mountain draw a very different crowd focused on climbing.
Most sites here are accessible year-round thanks to the humid subtropical climate, though summer heat and winter rain both shape when families actually book.
Things to do near New Union
Water is the main draw. The Coosa River runs through Gadsden with boat ramps, fishing docks, and a downtown Riverwalk, and Neely Henry Lake is close enough for a morning of bass fishing. Lake Guntersville, roughly a 30 to 45 minute drive northwest, is one of the Southeast's better-known bass lakes and anchors a full state park with hiking, a beach complex, and a zip line course.
On land, families point toward Noccalula Falls Park in Gadsden for the 90-foot waterfall, Little River Canyon National Preserve near Fort Payne for canyon rim drives and swimming holes, and DeSoto State Park for waterfalls and shaded trails. Climbers and curious kids head up Chandler Mountain to Horse Pens 40, a sandstone boulder field with hiking, a country store, and a large covered pavilion.

Spring and fall are the practical sweet spots. From March through May, daytime highs climb from the 60s into the upper 70s Fahrenheit, waterfalls run full from winter rain, and state park campgrounds start filling on weekends. Fall brings drier weather, cooler evenings, and reliable color on Lookout Mountain from mid-October into early November.
Summer is hot and humid, with July averaging around 90 degrees for daily highs and afternoon thunderstorms common. Lakefront sites at Lake Guntersville State Park, The Cove Lakeside RV Resort and Campground, and River Rocks Landing book heavily around Memorial Day, the Fourth of July, and Labor Day. Pools, splash pads, and shaded riverfront sites make the heat manageable, but families should reserve well ahead.
Winters are short and mostly mild, with January averaging about 41 degrees Fahrenheit for the daily mean and measurable snow rare. January and February are the wettest months, so expect muddy sites and closed climbing days. Horse Pens 40 climbers actually prefer this window because the sandstone grips best in cool, dry air.

Amazing host! I will be trying to use Ryan again next year for the same event!
Marcus R. - Oct 2026
Working with Ryan was a pleasure. He was friendly, accommodating, & helped me lug my heavy cooler into the camper. He was available for questions and for the most part, answered quickly- there was only one time there was a delay, but he was busy with work. If I’m in the area again, I will definitely use his service. The camper is well maintained.

Lori was very accommodating and patient as our arrival time went astray and we arrived much later than we wanted. Since this was my first time renting, I was a bit ignorant of everything but she was great about walking me through everything I needed to know and was communicative during the entire process!
Derek V. - Nov 2025
Lorie was great to work with. The camper was super clean and stocked with goodies. Will be booking again with Lorie!!!!

How to book campgrounds near New Union
Alabama State Parks handle their own reservations through the state system at reserve.alapark.com. Lake Guntersville and DeSoto both accept bookings online, by phone, or in person, and DeSoto recommends reserving holiday weekends at least three months in advance. Lake Guntersville caps stays at 14 days.
Private parks in the Gadsden and Attalla area, including The Cove Lakeside RV Resort and Campground, River Rocks Landing, and Bigs Wills Creek Campground, take reservations directly through their own websites, by phone, or through third-party booking platforms. Sand Mountain Park and Amphitheater books its 17 hookup sites through the park's own site, with a one-month maximum stay.
Horse Pens 40 is transitioning to pre-paid reservation camping and asks guests to call ahead. Booking early matters most on Triple Crown bouldering competition weekends and during the park's bluegrass festivals.
What to expect on the ground
Expect a mix of resort-style RV parks and rustic mountain camps. River Rocks Landing sits on a peninsula of the Coosa River with pools, boat access, and full-hookup pull-through sites, though interior sites can feel tight. The Cove Lakeside RV Resort and Campground offers 30 and 50-amp sites on a private spring-fed lake with fishing and boat rentals. Sand Mountain Park and Amphitheater puts campers inside a 130-acre sports and events complex with a water park, playgrounds, and walk-to concert access.
Horse Pens 40 is a different experience: primitive tent sites, rustic cabins, and a limited number of 30-amp RV hookups with water on top of Chandler Mountain, plus bathhouses and a country store. Pets are not allowed in the rock or nature areas. Drivers with trailers should follow the campground's posted directions rather than GPS, which routes up the steep side of the mountain.

September through early November is often even better with crisp 60s to 75 F days, fall color, and fewer crowds. Fuel is one of the easier costs to plan for around New Union. Expect roughly 8 to 10 miles per gallon (MPG) for Class A motorhomes, 10 to 14 MPG for Class C, 15 to 20 MPG for campervans (Class B), and your tow vehicle's MPG (minus 30 to 40%) for travel trailers and fifth wheels. Alabama gas prices typically sit below the national average, often $2.80 to $3.30 per gallon, which keeps a New Union RV trip wallet-friendly. A weekend loop to Huntsville and back (around 100 miles total) might run $30 to $50 in fuel for a Class C. Watch for the Tennessee River bridge crossings, which can be windy, and slow down on curvy stretches of AL-227 along the lake. Summer afternoons can bring sudden thunderstorms, so check the Huntsville National Weather Service forecast before driving. Pro tip: avoid Friday afternoon traffic between Albertville and Guntersville during bass tournament weekends, leave by mid-morning for a smooth arrival at your campground.

Most lakefront sites include a picnic table, fire ring, and lantern post. For dump-and-fill on the go, Lake Guntersville State Park's dump station is open to non-campers for a small fee. Pro tip: ask your host whether your rental includes a fresh-water hose, sewer hose, and surge protector, those small items make setup at your site effortless.

outdooralabama.com/reservoirs/lake-guntersvilleHow does payment and the security deposit work for an RV rental in New Union, AL?
Payment on RVezy is simple and secure: you pay through the platform with a credit or debit card, with no cash exchanged with the host. A security deposit is held separately from your booking payment (the amount is shown clearly on each listing) and is released after dropoff, assuming the RV is returned in the same condition. The protection plan included with every booking helps cover accidental damage, so the deposit primarily covers items like excessive cleaning, smoking, or missing gear. Take a quick walkaround video of the RV at pickup and dropoff, documenting condition is the easiest way to ensure your full deposit comes back quickly after your New Union RV trip.
