Campgrounds near Oneonta, Alabama
Oneonta sits in Blount County in the Murphree Valley, roughly 40 miles northeast of Birmingham and within an hour of Gadsden. The town is the Blount County seat and hosts the annual Covered Bridge Festival, which draws visitors to the county's remaining historic covered bridges. The surrounding valleys and ridges put RV travelers within short drives of Chandler Mountain, Neely Henry Lake, and the Coosa River.
Camping options nearby range from primitive mountaintop sites to full-hookup lakefront resorts. Horse Pens 40 offers primitive camping, rustic cabins, and a limited number of RV hookups with 30-amp electric and water atop Chandler Mountain. Greensport RV Park & Campground provides full hookups on Neely Henry Lake, while Bigs Wills Creek Campground pairs full-hookup RV sites with creek tubing outside Gadsden.
Carson Village Moblie Home and RV Park offers a quieter base with easy access to Birmingham, and The Cove Lakeside RV Resort and Campground sits on a lake near Gadsden. Together these give RV renters a mix of lake, creek, and mountain settings within a short drive of Oneonta.
Things to do around Oneonta
Chandler Mountain is the marquee draw. Horse Pens 40 is known worldwide for sandstone bouldering, with over 200 problems across the boulder field, plus hiking trails, rare plant habitat, and periodic bluegrass festivals and powwows on site. The park sits atop one of the higher points in Alabama, with mature hardwood canopy shading the stone.
Water is the other main attraction. Neely Henry Lake, accessed from Greensport, supports fishing, boating, kayaking, and swimming, and Bigs Wills Creek runs a mile-and-a-quarter tubing float with shuttle service from spring through summer.
Closer to town, Palisades Park sits on Ebell Mountain with hiking trails, cabins, and public picnic areas, and Blount County's covered bridges are within short driving loops. Birmingham's zoo, museums, and restaurants are about 45 minutes southwest.

Spring and fall are the most comfortable seasons for RV travel in Blount County. March through May brings warming days, blooming hardwoods, and the shoulder season for bouldering at Horse Pens 40, where cooler rock and lower humidity produce the best climbing conditions. Fall carries similar temperatures with lower rainfall and October foliage across the ridges.
Summer is hot and humid, with July highs averaging around 90 degrees Fahrenheit and heat index often above 100. This is the peak season at lake and creek campgrounds, and tubing at Bigs Wills Creek runs on its main summer schedule. Afternoon thunderstorms are common, and severe weather season peaks in spring.
Winters are short and generally mild, though wet, with December typically the rainiest month averaging around six inches of rain. January lows average near freezing, and Greensport shuts off water spigots when temperatures drop below freezing. Horse Pens 40 remains open year-round with limited holiday closures for incoming guests around Easter, Thanksgiving, and Christmas.
How to book a campsite near Oneonta
Most private parks in the area take reservations directly through their websites, by phone, or through third-party platforms. Greensport RV Park & Campground accepts online bookings and requires check-in at the gatehouse on arrival. The Cove Lakeside RV Resort and Campground and Carson Village Moblie Home and RV Park both handle stays through their offices, and lakefront and pull-through sites tend to book earliest for summer holiday weekends.
Bigs Wills Creek Campground sells camping and tubing tickets at its storefront and website, and tubing days can sell out on hot summer weekends. Horse Pens 40 is transitioning to pre-paid reservation camping, so calling ahead to register is strongly encouraged before arrival, and every guest must sign a liability waiver on site. Booking eight to twelve weeks ahead is a safe target for full-hookup sites from May through Labor Day.
What to expect on the ground
Terrain around Oneonta is hilly, with narrow county roads climbing between valleys and ridges. Rigs headed to Horse Pens 40 should plan for a steep, winding approach to the top of Chandler Mountain, and the park specifically warns RVs and trailers not to follow GPS up the steep side. Larger RVs are better served by lakefront and creekside parks along the U.S. 231 and I-59 corridors.
Full hookups, 30/50-amp service, and pull-through sites are standard at Greensport and Bigs Wills Creek. Horse Pens 40 has a limited number of RV sites with 30-amp electric and water only, plus primitive tent areas, bathhouses, and a country store. Cell coverage varies by carrier on the mountain.
Expect humid summer nights, active insect pressure near creeks and lakes, and the occasional severe thunderstorm warning. Pet policies vary by park, and dogs are not allowed at Horse Pens 40 at all, so travelers with pets should plan accordingly.

Fuel is usually the second biggest line item after the rental itself, but it's easy to plan for. In Alabama, gas averages around $2.80 to $3.20 per gallon, well below the national average. Expect roughly 8 to 10 miles per gallon for a Class A motorhome, 10 to 14 for a Class C, 15 to 18 for a Class B campervan, and 12 to 16 for a tow vehicle pulling a travel trailer. A weekend loop from Oneonta to Smith Lake and back (around 80 miles) might run $25 to $40 in fuel for a Class C. Pro tip: fill up at the Love's Travel Stop off Interstate 65 in Cullman, it has easy RV access and reliably lower prices than Oneonta stations.
eia.gov/petroleum/gasdiesel/How far in advance should I book a campground near Oneonta?
Plan ahead and you'll lock in the prime sites. For Alabama State Parks like Rickwood Caverns and Oak Mountain, reservations can be made well in advance through the official Alabama State Parks reservation system, and weekends in April, October, and Memorial Day through Labor Day fill fast. Aim to book three to six months out for peak times, and two to four weeks out for shoulder season midweek stays. Smith Lake Park (a Cullman County park) and private parks near Interstate 65 are often easier to grab last minute. Pro tip: if you strike out at Rickwood Caverns, check Palisades Park's primitive sites or call Smith Lake Park directly, they sometimes hold cancellation spots that aren't online.

Interstate 65 is just 25 miles west for easy access to Birmingham, Huntsville, or Nashville. The catch: the rural county roads to the covered bridges and Palisades Park include some 5 to 7 percent grades and one lane bridges (Swann Bridge has an 8 foot height limit and a 3 ton weight limit, so larger motorhomes should view it from the parking area). Spring brings occasional thunderstorms. Pro tip: download offline Google Maps before you leave town, cell coverage gets spotty in the Locust Fork river valley.

alabama.travel/How does payment and the security deposit work?
Payment is straightforward and secure through the RVezy platform, no cash or off platform transfers. To avoid issues, do a thorough walkaround with your host at pickup and drop off, take photos and video of the rig's condition, and return it on time, fueled, and with empty tanks if required. Pro tip: use a credit card with strong fraud protection for the smoothest experience.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360038106214-How-the-security-deposit-worksWhere can I dump waste and fill fresh water near Oneonta?

Rickwood Caverns State Park has a dump station and potable water fill available to registered campers and (often) to day visitors for a small fee. Smith Lake Park in Cullman offers a dump station and water fill. The Love's Travel Stop just off Interstate 65 in Cullman (about 30 minutes west of Oneonta) has a dump station, fresh water, and easy big rig access.
