Camping near Our Town, Alabama
Our Town is a small community in Tallapoosa County in east-central Alabama, located a short distance south of Alexander City in the Piedmont region along the Tallapoosa River corridor. The area's main draw for RV travelers is Lake Martin, a 44,000-acre reservoir with roughly 750 miles of wooded shoreline, and the state park that anchors its western shore.
Wind Creek State Park is the closest major campground and one of the largest state-operated campgrounds in the United States, with 586 campsites, all offering water and electric hookups and many directly on the water. Smaller private options in the surrounding region include Real Nice & Easy RV Park and Franks Point Of View LLC, which offers a small number of ridgetop sites with long views over the Alabama hills.
RVers heading south toward Montgomery will also find Camp Sherrye on the Coosa, on the Coosa River in Wetumpka, and Capital City RV Park closer to the state capital. Together these give travelers a mix of lakefront state-park camping and private RV parks within an easy drive of Our Town.
Things to do near Our Town
Lake Martin drives most recreation in the area. From Wind Creek State Park, visitors can launch boats, rent pontoons or jon boats at the marina, swim at the north picnic area, fish for crappie, bluegill, and striped bass, and ride the park's Eagle zip line. Wind Creek is also a stop on Alabama's Piedmont Plateau Birding Trail.
On land, the Cherokee Ridge Alpine Trail runs along the lake's eastern edge, and Horseshoe Bend National Military Park preserves the site of the 1814 battle that ended the Creek War, about a half-hour drive north. Downtown Alexander City sits a short drive from Wind Creek and offers restaurants, groceries, and fuel. Families traveling farther south can add the Coosa River paddling routes near Wetumpka and the museums and state capitol grounds in Montgomery.

The Our Town area has a humid subtropical climate. Summers are hot and humid with daytime highs typically in the upper 80s to low 90s Fahrenheit, and winters are mild, with only trace snowfall in most years. Rain falls year-round rather than in a single wet season, and thunderstorms are common from late spring through summer.
Peak camping runs from Memorial Day through Labor Day, when Lake Martin is at full pool and swimming, boating, and tubing dominate the weekends. Waterfront sites at Wind Creek State Park book months ahead for summer holiday weekends and can require multi-night minimums during peak periods. The park's fall festival and Halloween weekends are also popular and fill early.
Spring and fall are the most comfortable stretches for touring. March through May brings wildflowers and moderate temperatures, and September through early November delivers cooler nights and lighter crowds, though hurricane remnants can occasionally track inland from the Gulf and produce heavy rain in late summer and early fall.
How to book near Our Town
Wind Creek State Park is reserved through the Alabama State Parks reservation system at reserve.alapark.com, or by calling the park office. Reservations can be made up to one year in advance, with a maximum stay of 14 days. Reservations are not strictly required, but are strongly encouraged because the park is popular year-round, and premium waterfront sites can require a seven-night minimum during peak season. The 39 renovated premium sites are booked by phone or in person rather than through the online system.
Private parks in the area, including Real Nice & Easy RV Park, Franks Point Of View LLC, Camp Sherrye on the Coosa, and Capital City RV Park, are booked directly with the operator by phone or through their own websites. For summer holiday weekends around Lake Martin, plan on locking in dates several months ahead.
What to expect on the ground
Wind Creek State Park is large. The campground spreads across roughly 320 acres, and some sites sit a fair walk from bathhouses, so families with young children may want to request a site near a bathhouse when booking. All 586 sites have water and electric, and 268 sites also offer sewer hookups; the 39 renovated premium sites include 50-amp service and concrete pads long enough to accommodate RVs up to 60 feet. Standard check-in is 2:00 p.m.
Cell coverage is generally reliable near Alexander City but can drop in wooded lakeside sections. Alexander City has full-service grocery stores and fuel within a short drive. Summer weekends are busy and lively; if quiet is the priority, plan a midweek stay or target the shoulder months.
