Campgrounds near Oxford, Alabama
Oxford sits in Calhoun County along I-20 in east-central Alabama, roughly halfway between Birmingham and Atlanta and within a short drive of the Talladega National Forest and the Appalachian foothills. The location makes it a practical RV base for mountain camping, motorsports weekends, and lake trips, with several private RV parks and one major state park within about 30 to 45 minutes of town.
The closest full-service option is Scenic Drive RV Park and Campground, followed by Cheaha State Park, which sits about thirty minutes from downtown Oxford on Alabama's highest ridgeline. Toward Talladega Superspeedway, Talladega Pit Stop RV Park and Campground, Talladega Creekside Resort, and GrandStand RV Park - Talladega Alabama cater to race fans and long-haul travelers.
Expect a mix of paved pull-throughs at the private parks and rustic mountain sites at the state park. Interstate access, grocery stores, and RV service in Oxford and neighboring Anniston make resupply easy between stops.
Things to do near Oxford
Cheaha State Park is the headline outdoor draw. The park has a lake, a dog park, accessible and challenging trails, and small museums, and it borders the Talladega National Forest, which carries long stretches of the Pinhoti Trail for hikers and backpackers.
Motorsports fans plan around Talladega Superspeedway, which hosts spring and fall NASCAR weekends. Race weekends drive heavy demand for nearby campgrounds, and staying close to the track is a common way to experience the event.
Closer to Oxford, families can combine campground stays with visits to Choccolocco Park, the Coldwater Mountain mountain-bike trail system, and the Anniston Museum and Gardens. Logan Martin Lake offers boat ramps and swimming a short drive southwest.

Spring and fall are the strongest windows for RV camping around Oxford. Daytime highs sit in the seventies, humidity is manageable, and wildflowers and fall color show along the Cheaha ridgeline. These shoulder seasons also coincide with peak booking pressure because of the NASCAR calendar at Talladega.
Summer is hot and humid with frequent afternoon thunderstorms. Full-hookup sites with 30 or 50 amp power are worth prioritizing so air conditioning can run through the afternoon. Lake days and early-morning hikes work better than midday exposure on exposed ridge trails.
Winters are short and generally mild, with occasional cold snaps and rain. The maximum stay for camping at Alabama State Parks is 14 nights, extended to 31 nights from November 1 to March 31 at select parks, which makes the cooler months attractive for extended stays. Race weekends at Talladega Superspeedway drive sharp demand spikes even in the off-season, so check the track schedule before locking in dates.
How to book near Oxford
Cheaha State Park uses the Alabama State Parks reservation system at reserve.alapark.com. Advanced reservations may be made up to one year in advance, with Alabama residents receiving a 13-month early window. Maximum stay is 14 nights, or 31 nights from November 1 to March 31 at select parks, and there is a non-refundable reservation fee per site.
Cheaha offers 77 improved full-hookup sites in the Upper and Lower Improved Campgrounds, plus tent sites and primitive areas. Private parks such as Scenic Drive RV Park and Campground, Talladega Pit Stop RV Park and Campground, Talladega Creekside Resort, and GrandStand RV Park - Talladega Alabama book directly through their own websites or by phone, and race-week inventory typically opens months ahead.
What to expect on arrival
At Cheaha State Park, campground check-in is 2 PM and check-out is 11 AM. The email confirmation includes a gate code, and guests are welcome to set up at the campsite first, then return to the Mountain Store to complete check-in and pick up a post pass and vehicle pass, which must be displayed while in the park.
Sites at the state park range from paved full-hookup pads with 20, 30, and 50 amp service to rustic tent-only areas. CCC Primitive, Upper Primitive, and Lake Group campgrounds do not include access to bathhouses or showers, so plan for onboard water and holding tanks if choosing those loops. Private parks near Talladega generally offer level pads, laundry, and Wi-Fi, with amenities skewing toward race-weekend crowds.

July and August bring hot, humid days near 90F, perfect for swimming at Cheaha Lake but plan for heavy AC use. help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360038106774-Roadside-assistance-coverageWhat are popular road trips I can take from Oxford, AL?
Oxford is one of the best launchpads in the Southeast for a multi-day RV road trip. Top routes for an RV road trip from Oxford include: Talladega Scenic Drive south to Cheaha State Park (about 30 miles, mountaintop views and easy RV roads), Birmingham for civil rights history and Vulcan Park (65 miles west on I-20), Atlanta for the Aquarium and World of Coca-Cola (about 100 miles east on I-20), Huntsville's U.S. Space and Rocket Center (about 150 miles northwest), and the Tennessee River Valley around Guntersville (about 90 miles north). Cross-border trips into Georgia and Tennessee are typically allowed, just confirm with your host before booking. Travel into Mexico is not permitted on RVezy rentals. Insider tip: take Highway 281 to Cheaha if you are driving a larger rig.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Oxford%2C%20AlabamaWhat kind of fuel economy and gas budget should I plan for?
Budgeting is easier than you'd guess. Expect roughly 7 to 10 miles per gallon for a Class A or Class C motorhome rental in Oxford, around 12 to 18 mpg for a truck towing a travel trailer, and 18 to 22 mpg for a Class B campervan rental Oxford travelers love for solo or couple trips. Alabama consistently has some of the cheapest fuel in the country, often 30 to 50 cents per gallon below the national average, and gas stations cluster along I-20 at Exits 185 and 188 in Oxford. For a four-day, 400-mile loop in a Class C, plan on roughly $180 to $230 in fuel. Pro tip: fill up in Oxford or Heflin before heading up to Cheaha, station options thin out on the mountain.
eia.gov/petroleum/gasdiesel/How far in advance should I book a campground around Oxford, AL?
The sooner the better, but you still have options. Cheaha State Park's campgrounds open reservations up to 12 months in advance through the Alabama State Parks online booking system, and fall weekends (especially October) plus race-week dates at Talladega Superspeedway fill up 4 to 6 months out. Privately run parks near I-20 in Oxford usually have weekday availability within a week or two, even in peak season. For a Talladega race weekend, lock in 6 or more months out. Local insider tip: if Cheaha is fully booked, try midweek at Coleman Lake in the Talladega National Forest, it is quieter and rarely full. Pair the campground booking with your RVezy rental confirmation to keep dates aligned.
reserveamerica.com/explore/cheaha-state-park/AL/343287/overviewWhat are local driving conditions like around Oxford, AL?
Driving an RV around Oxford is refreshingly straightforward. The main artery is Interstate 20, a wide, flat four-lane that runs east-west between Birmingham and Atlanta, perfect for big rigs. Highway 21 through town is easy two- and four-lane driving with normal traffic signals. The one route to plan for is the climb to Cheaha State Park: take Alabama Highway 281 (the Talladega Scenic Drive), which is well-maintained, gently graded, and recommended by the park for large recreational vehicles. Avoid Cheaha Road / County Road 42 from Munford in anything bigger than a campervan, as it's narrow and winding. Summer thunderstorms can pop up quickly from June to August, so check the radar before heading out. Otherwise, Oxford is one of the easier Alabama RV trip bases for new drivers.
algotraffic.com/What amenities and hookups can I expect at campgrounds near Oxford, AL?
You will find excellent infrastructure for an Oxford RV trip. Most full-hookup parks in the area, including the private parks along I-20 and Cheaha's improved sites, offer 30- and 50-amp electric, fresh water, and sewer right at the site, plus picnic tables, fire rings, and bathhouses with hot showers. Wi-Fi is hit-or-miss in the mountains and cell service can be spotty around Cheaha, so download maps offline before you climb. Many include extras like a generator for boondocking, outdoor speakers for tailgating at Talladega, a backup camera, and even Wi-Fi hotspots. Listings on RVezy show photos and full amenity lists so you know exactly what you are getting. Pro tip: for hot Alabama summers, prioritize rigs with dual AC units or a generator, you will thank yourself by 3 p.m. in July.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Oxford%2C%20AlabamaWhat add-ons and pickup options are available with an Oxford, AL RV rental?
You can customize your rental to make life easy. Mileage policies vary, so look for listings offering unlimited mileage if you are planning a longer loop. Pro tip: bundle delivery, linens, and a generator if you are heading to Coleman Lake or other off-grid friendly sites in the Talladega National Forest, the convenience is worth every dollar.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Oxford%2C%20AlabamaHow does payment and the security deposit work on RVezy?
Payments are simple, secure, and transparent. When you book an RV rental in Oxford on RVezy, you pay through the platform with a credit or debit card, never directly to the host. The total includes the nightly rate, taxes, host add-ons, and the protection plan you choose at checkout. A refundable security deposit is held separately from your booking payment and pre-authorized on your card before pickup, then released after the trip if everything is in order. To avoid issues, do a thorough walk-around with the host at pickup, take date-stamped photos, and return the RV with a full fuel tank and empty waste tanks (unless your listing says otherwise). That simple checklist is the best way to get your full deposit back fast.
