Campgrounds near Pelham, Alabama
Pelham sits about twenty miles south of Birmingham in Shelby County, along the I-65 corridor. The city's main draw for RV travelers is Oak Mountain State Park, which spans 9,940 acres in the northeast quadrant of Pelham. The park is home to the Alabama Wildlife Center, the Oak Mountain Interpretive Center, and a BMX track, and it anchors most trip planning in the area.
Inside the park, Oak Mountain Campground offers 84 RV and 66 tent sites with a mix of partial and full hookups and primitive sites, plus 10 fully furnished cabins near Lake Tranquility, including one accessible cabin and two dog-friendly cabins. A separate Equestrian campground within the park serves riders traveling with horses. Private options nearby include Birmingham South RV Park, Hoover RV Park, and Rolling Hills RV Park, which give full-hookup alternatives when the state park fills up.
The mix of state park and private grounds makes Pelham a practical base for families balancing outdoor time with easy access to Birmingham's restaurants, museums, and sports venues.
Things to do around Pelham
Oak Mountain State Park is the primary activity hub. The surrounding 9,940 acres hold miles of hiking and biking trails, swimming areas, BMX tracks, and an archery range. Trails wind through forested ridges to Peavine Falls, and one of the reservoirs is a 60-acre lake inhabited by largemouth bass, bream, catfish, and crappie, making it a solid angling stop. The Alabama Wildlife Center and Oak Mountain Interpretive Center offer opportunities to see wildlife up close, which works well for families with kids.
Equestrian visitors can trailer in and use the dedicated horse camp. The Equestrian Campground offers 12 sites with full hookups, fire rings, picnic tables, and a dump station for horse waste. Off-park, Pelham puts travelers within a short drive of downtown Birmingham, the Birmingham Zoo, Vulcan Park, and the Barber Motorsports complex.

Central Alabama runs on a long warm-weather season. Birmingham experiences a humid subtropical climate, characterized by hot summers and cool winters with strong seasonal temperature contrasts. The area is wet overall, with rainfall spread fairly evenly throughout the year, though spring is typically the wettest season. Occasional snowfall occurs in winter. That means RV travel is realistic year-round, but comfort varies sharply by season.
Spring and fall are the sweet spots for camping in Pelham. Mid March through May and mid September through November bring milder temperatures and lower humidity, and they line up with wildflower viewing and fall color on Double Oak Mountain.
Summer brings heat, humidity, and daily thunderstorm potential, but it is the busiest camping season for families on school breaks. Winter is quieter; expect cool days, cold nights, and occasional freezes that can affect water hookups at exposed sites.
How to book campsites near Pelham
Oak Mountain State Park is reserved through the Alabama State Parks system at reserve.alapark.com or by calling the park office. Advanced reservations may be made up to one year in advance. Maximum stay for camping is 14 nights, or 31 nights November 1 to March 31 at select parks. Campground check-in time is 2 PM and check-out time is 11 AM. Reservations require a two-night minimum stay, and reservations for holiday weekends must be at least three months in advance.
For the equestrian sites, trailer-in riders should confirm stall availability by phone before arrival. Private parks such as Birmingham South RV Park, Hoover RV Park, and Rolling Hills RV Park take direct bookings through their own websites and are useful backups on peak weekends.
What to expect on arrival
At Oak Mountain, expect a large, wooded park with a mix of lakeside and forested loops. Bathroom facilities show their age but remain clean and heated, with hot water and multiple locations throughout the campground. Train noise carries through the campground at night, and cell service runs spotty with around two bars for Verizon users, so download maps before losing signal.
Oak Mountain State Park charges an entrance fee separate from camping fees. Pets are allowed under Alabama State Park regulations and must be crated, caged, or on a leash no longer than 6 feet at all times. Private parks in Pelham and neighboring Hoover generally offer full hookups, level pads, and easier interstate access for larger rigs.
