Campgrounds near Piedmont, Alabama
Piedmont sits in northeast Alabama near the Cleburne and Calhoun county line, in the foothills of the southern Appalachians. It is best known as a stop on the Chief Ladiga Trail, Alabama's first and longest rail trail project. Anniston's trail extension brings the Chief Ladiga Trail's total length to approximately 39.5 miles, and it connects to the Silver Comet Trail at the Georgia state line, forming a paved corridor of roughly 105 miles. That connection puts a long stretch of continuous paved trail within reach of an RV parked in town.
Campground options within a short drive lean small and rural. Chief Ladiga Trail Campground sits in Cleburne County between Piedmont and Cedartown, Georgia, with easy access to the trail corridor. Highland Park Off-Road Resort caters to off-road vehicle users, while Bay Springs Motel and Campground and Cane Creek RV Park and Campground offer more traditional hookup sites. Weiss Lake RV Park, northeast of town near the Georgia border, gives anglers access to a well-known reservoir on the Coosa River system.
Things to do near Piedmont
Cycling and hiking dominate. The paved Chief Ladiga Trail is flat, family-friendly, and links Piedmont with Jacksonville, Weaver, and Anniston to the south, then crosses into Georgia to meet the Silver Comet Trail. In Alabama, the Chief Ladiga Trail passes just two blocks from the heart of Piedmont, and about 10 miles away in Jacksonville, it runs roughly a mile north of downtown, making town stops easy for cyclists.
The surrounding Talladega National Forest offers longer backcountry hikes on the Pinhoti Trail, plus paddling and swimming on Terrapin Creek. Weiss Lake, roughly a half hour northeast, draws anglers year-round. The lake is known as the Crappie Fishing Capital of the World, and largemouth and striped bass are making a name for themselves as well. Public access areas and boat ramps around the lake are convenient to RV travelers.
In town, riders can reach cafes and outfitters directly from the trail, making Piedmont a natural rest stop for multi-day cycling trips.

Spring and fall are the strongest windows. From late March through May, temperatures are mild, wildflowers bloom along the trail, and campgrounds are rarely full. Fall, from late September into early November, brings cool nights, lower humidity, and color in the hardwood ridges of the Talladega National Forest.
Summers are hot and humid, with afternoon thunderstorms common from June through August. Sites at shaded campgrounds fill on weekends, especially around Independence Day and Labor Day. Biting insects along creeks and wetlands peak in midsummer, and cyclists on the Chief Ladiga Trail typically ride early or late in the day.
Winters are cool rather than harsh. Freezes occur but heavy snow is rare. Some small private campgrounds reduce hours or amenities in January and February, so travelers should call ahead. Weiss Lake offers strong crappie fishing from February through April as well as in late fall, so cold-weather anglers still have a reason to visit.
How to book campgrounds near Piedmont
Most campgrounds in the immediate Piedmont area are privately operated and take reservations directly by phone or through their own websites. Chief Ladiga Trail Campground, Highland Park Off-Road Resort, Bay Springs Motel and Campground, Cane Creek RV Park and Campground, and Weiss Lake RV Park all fall in this category, so calling ahead is the most reliable approach, particularly for holiday weekends and hunting seasons.
For public land options in the wider region, Talladega National Forest recreation sites are managed by the U.S. Forest Service and, where reservable, use Recreation.gov. Alabama State Parks such as Cheaha, southwest of Piedmont, book through the state park reservation system, which typically opens sites up to eleven months in advance. Booking four to eight weeks out is generally sufficient outside major holidays.
What to expect on the ground in Piedmont
Terrain around Piedmont is rolling foothills, with elevations rising toward the Talladega ridges. Roads into smaller campgrounds are often narrow rural two-lanes, so drivers of larger rigs should map the final approach in advance. Hookup levels vary widely across nearby parks, from primitive tent-style sites to full-hookup RV pads at lake and trail-adjacent properties.
Cell coverage is generally adequate near town and along main roads but can drop inside the national forest. Expect a quiet, rural setting with limited on-site stores. Grocery runs are easiest in Piedmont, Jacksonville, or Centre. Trail users staying near the Chief Ladiga corridor can reach cafes and small shops in Piedmont directly by bike.

Frequently asked questions about campgrounds near Piedmont, AL
How much does it cost to rent an RV in Piedmont, AL?
Good news: RV rental in Piedmont is one of the most affordable ways to explore northeast Alabama. Travel trailers typically run $75 to $150 per night, Class C motorhomes range from $150 to $250, and larger Class A rigs land between $200 and $350. Hosts set their own pricing, so you'll see plenty of options to match your budget. Booking midweek and outside Talladega race weekends (April and October) can save you 15 to 25 percent. Use the price filter and sort by lowest to find a cheap RV rental Piedmont travelers love. Pro tip: many local hosts include free nights on stays of 5 or more, so it pays to extend your Piedmont RV trip into a full week along the Chief Ladiga Trail.
alabama.travel/places-to-go/piedmontWhat license do I need to rent an RV in Piedmont, Alabama?
Great news: a standard driver's license is all you need to rent an RV in Piedmont. Alabama does not require a commercial driver's license (CDL) or special endorsement for any RV available on RVezy, including Class A motorhomes and fifth wheels. Approved drivers on RVezy are generally 25 or older with a valid license, and your ID is verified inside the platform during booking. Visiting from outside the United States? Bring your home license along with an International Driving Permit if your license is not in English. Most first-time renters in Calhoun County are surprised how simple the paperwork is, leaving you free to focus on packing snacks for the drive up to Cheaha State Park.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360039008774-Understanding-approved-driver-requirementsIs my RV rental in Piedmont protected if something happens during my trip?
Yes, and this is one of the best reasons to book an RV rental in Piedmont through RVezy. Every booking includes an RVezy renter protection plan plus 24/7 roadside assistance, giving you serious peace of mind whether you are rolling through downtown Piedmont or climbing Highway 281 toward Mount Cheaha. You choose your protection level at checkout (Standard, Special, or Supreme), with higher tiers offering lower deductibles and broader coverage for damage during your trip. While it is not traditional auto insurance, it is purpose-built for RV rentals and addresses the situations renters worry about most, so you can focus on the views from Bald Rock instead of the what-ifs.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/34008759079835-RVezy-renter-protection-plans-in-detailWhat if I need to cancel my Piedmont RV rental?
Booking is low-risk. RVezy sets a standard cancellation framework (it is not host-defined), and every reservation includes a grace period right after booking during which you can cancel for a full refund. After the grace period, your refund depends on how far in advance you cancel relative to your trip start date. The same RVezy policy applies to every rental in Piedmont, so you do not have to compare individual listings. If severe spring weather threatens your dates, contact RVezy support and they will walk you through your options. That flexibility makes it easy to lock in a Cheaha-bound RV now, even if your calendar is not 100 percent firm.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360037736674-Understanding-the-cancellation-policy-for-guestsCan I bring my dog on a Piedmont RV rental?
Absolutely, and Piedmont is a fantastic spot for a pet-friendly RV rental. Many hosts welcome dogs (and sometimes cats), so just toggle the Pet-Friendly filter when you search and you'll see your options instantly. Once you're on the road, your pup will love the leashed-friendly Chief Ladiga Trail that starts right in downtown Piedmont, plus the pet-welcoming campgrounds at Cheaha State Park and Coleman Lake Recreation Area in the Talladega National Forest. Message the host before booking to confirm pet fees and any size limits. Pro tip: pack a tick check brush, since the wooded trails around Dugger Mountain Wilderness are gorgeous but the ticks are real from April through October.
fs.usda.gov/recarea/alabama/recarea/?recid=29265Can the RV be delivered to my campground in Piedmont?
Yes, RV delivery in Piedmont is widely available and it's a game-changer if it's your first time renting an RV. Many local hosts will deliver the rig directly to Cheaha State Park, Coleman Lake, or a private property in Calhoun or Cherokee County, set up the hookups, level it, and walk you through every system before they leave. Delivery fees typically run $2 to $4 per mile from the host's location, with some offering free delivery within 25 miles. Just use the Delivery filter when you search. That means no towing stress, no backing into a tight site, and you can roll in by car and find your motorhome rental Piedmont ready to enjoy.
alapark.com/parks/cheaha-state-parkHow does mileage work and how far can I drive from Piedmont?
You've got plenty of range to explore. Hosts set their own mileage policies, and many Piedmont listings offer 100 to 150 free miles per night, with some featuring RV rental with unlimited mileage. Additional miles are usually $0.30 to $0.50 each. From Piedmont you can easily reach Cheaha State Park (35 miles), Little River Canyon National Preserve (55 miles), Birmingham (90 miles), Chattanooga, TN (115 miles), and Atlanta, GA (95 miles) for an epic RV road trip from Piedmont. Pro tip: if you're planning a bigger loop through Tennessee or the Smokies, filter for unlimited mileage upfront. It's the easiest way to keep your budget predictable on a longer Alabama-to-Appalachia adventure.
nps.gov/liri/index.htmWhere are the best campgrounds near Piedmont, AL?
You'll be spoiled for choice. The best campgrounds near Piedmont include Cheaha State Park (about 35 miles south, with full-hookup sites and Alabama's highest peak right outside your door), Coleman Lake Recreation Area in the Talladega National Forest (electric and water sites on a quiet swimming lake), Pine Glen Recreation Area (rustic, peaceful, great for stargazing), Terrapin Outdoor Center in Piedmont itself (riverside RV sites with kayak rentals), and Cherokee Rock Village (40 minutes north, with dramatic boulder-top views). For RV camping Piedmont travelers love, Cheaha books up fast on weekends. Pro tip: the Upper Improved Campground at Cheaha has the best mountain views, but Lower Campground is easier for big rigs to maneuver.
alapark.com/parks/cheaha-state-park/campingWhen is the best time to visit Piedmont in an RV?
Spring (March to May) and fall (mid-September to early November) are hands-down the best times for a Piedmont RV trip. Daytime temps sit in a perfect 65 to 78 degrees, dogwoods and mountain laurel bloom in April, and the October hardwood color along the Talladega Scenic Drive rivals anything in New England. Summers are warm and humid (highs in the upper 80s to low 90s) but still very campable thanks to lake breezes at Weiss Lake. Winters are mild with average highs around 52, and many local hosts rent year-round. Pro tip: book your fall foliage trip by early August. Cheaha and Coleman Lake fill up quickly for October weekends.
weather.gov/bmx/climateI've never driven an RV before. Will I be okay around Piedmont?
You'll be just fine, and Piedmont is actually a wonderful place for first-time renters. Roads around town are uncrowded, two-lane state highways like AL-9 and AL-21 are gentle and well-paved, and you won't deal with big-city traffic. Every RVezy host gives you a full orientation at pickup, walking you through hookups, slide-outs, propane, the generator, and dump procedures so nothing feels mysterious. Start with a smaller travel trailer or Class C campervan rental Piedmont if you're nervous. Pro tip: the climb up AL-281 (the Talladega Scenic Drive) to Cheaha is steep with some tight curves, so plan to drive it in daylight and downshift early. The view from Bald Rock is worth every mile.
dot.state.al.us/What happens if the RV breaks down during my trip?
Help is one phone call away. Every RV rental in Piedmont, AL comes with 24/7 roadside assistance included with the RVezy protection plan, covering things like flat tires, dead batteries, lockouts, and towing to the nearest qualified service location. If something goes sideways on the Talladega Scenic Drive or out near Weiss Lake, you call the roadside hotline and they dispatch local help. RVezy support is also available before, during, and after your trip if you need to coordinate with your host. Pro tip: snap a photo of the RV's VIN plate and propane tank certification date at pickup so you have the info ready. Cell service is solid in Piedmont and along I-20, though it can get patchy deep in the Talladega National Forest.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/34008759079835-RVezy-renter-protection-plans-in-detailCan I take my Piedmont RV rental to other states or across the border?
Yes, and Piedmont's location makes it a great launchpad. Most hosts allow travel throughout the continental US, so you can run an RV road trip from Piedmont over to Georgia (Atlanta is about 95 miles, the Blue Ridge Mountains around 150 miles), Tennessee (Chattanooga about 115 miles, the Smokies about 200 miles), or down to Gulf Shores (about 305 miles). Cross-border travel into Canada may be allowed with host approval, so message before booking. Travel into Mexico is not permitted on RVezy rentals because insurance coverage does not extend there. Pro tip: confirm any out-of-state travel in writing with your host before departure to keep your protection plan valid.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360039340074-Insurance-coverage-validityWhat should I budget for fuel on a Piedmont RV trip?
Fuel is one of Piedmont's friendliest line items. Alabama gas prices typically run 15 to 25 cents below the national average, with stations along US-278 and AL-21 offering the easiest big-rig pull-in. Expect roughly 8 to 10 miles per gallon (MPG) on a Class A, 10 to 14 MPG on a Class C, 12 to 16 MPG for a tow vehicle pulling a travel trailer, and 18 to 22 MPG on a Class B campervan. For a 4-night loop covering 400 miles in a Class C, budget around $130 to $170 in fuel. Pro tip: fill up in Jacksonville or Anniston before heading into the Talladega National Forest, as stations get sparse along the scenic byways.
eia.gov/petroleum/gasdiesel/How far in advance should I book a campground near Piedmont?
Earlier is better, especially for the prime spots. Cheaha State Park sites are reserved through Alabama State Parks' reservation system and fall weekends genuinely sell out by August. Coleman Lake and Pine Glen in the Talladega National Forest book through Recreation.gov on a 6-month rolling window. For Talladega Superspeedway race weekends (typically April and October), reserve at least 4 to 6 months in advance at any RV park within 30 miles. Private parks in and around Piedmont are more flexible and often have midweek openings. Pro tip: if your dates are locked but Cheaha is full, set a cancellation alert on the reservation site. Spots open up daily as plans shift.
recreation.gov/camping/campgrounds/234074What are driving conditions like around Piedmont?
They're refreshingly easy compared to most RV destinations. Piedmont sits in the rolling foothills of the southern Appalachians, so you'll see gentle grades rather than white-knuckle mountain passes. The main routes (US-278, AL-9, AL-21) are well-maintained two-lane highways with good shoulders. Watch for two things: the Talladega Scenic Byway (AL-281) climbing toward Cheaha has 7 percent grades and tight switchbacks, and spring brings sudden thunderstorms with hail risk from March through May. Deer are active at dawn and dusk along forest stretches. Pro tip: download the AlGo app from ALDOT for real-time road closures, and avoid driving the scenic byway in heavy fog. Bald Rock's overlook is much more enjoyable when you can actually see it.
algotraffic.com/What amenities can I expect at campgrounds near Piedmont?
You'll find a great mix. Cheaha State Park's Upper Improved Campground offers full hookups (water, 30/50-amp electric, sewer), hot showers, a camp store, and Wi-Fi near the lodge. Coleman Lake Recreation Area has water and electric sites plus a dump station, swimming beach, and flush toilets. Pine Glen is rustic with vault toilets and no hookups, perfect for boondockers. Most private parks around Weiss Lake have full hookups and laundry. For dumping and freshwater between stops, the Cheaha and Coleman Lake dump stations are open seasonally, and Piedmont's city park has potable water fill. Pro tip: bring a 50-foot freshwater hose and a 30-to-50-amp adapter. Site spacing varies and you'll be glad to have the slack.
recreation.gov/camping/campgrounds/234074What's inside a typical Piedmont RV rental?
More than you'd expect. Most RV rentals in Piedmont sleep 4 to 8 people and come fully equipped with a queen or king bed, convertible dinette, full kitchen (fridge, stove, microwave, sink), bathroom with shower and toilet, air conditioning, furnace, and a TV. Class C and Class A motorhomes have seatbelted travel seats so the whole family can ride safely. Many local hosts include a generator for boondocking at Pine Glen, plus outdoor speakers and awnings for those long Alabama evenings. Wi-Fi hotspots are sometimes available as an add-on. Pro tip: filter by Sleeps count and check the listing photos for the kitchen layout. A family RV trip Piedmont parents rave about usually has a bunkhouse floorplan.
alabama.travel/things-to-do/outdoors-natureWhat add-ons and pickup options are available with my rental?
Lots of ways to customize. Popular add-ons from Piedmont hosts include kitchen kits ($25 to $50), bed and bath linens ($15 to $30 per person), camping chairs and tables, bikes for the Chief Ladiga Trail, generators, propane refills, and pet cleaning fees ($25 to $75). For pickup, you can grab the RV at the host's location in or near Piedmont, or arrange RV delivery Piedmont style to your campground or driveway. Mileage and generator hours are listed clearly on each listing. Pro tip: if you're headed to Cheaha or Little River Canyon, ask about a bundled package with delivery, setup, and a bike rental. It turns a simple rental into a turn-key Alabama adventure.
alabama.travel/places-to-go/piedmontHow does payment and the security deposit work?
Payment is simple and secure. You pay through RVezy's platform with a credit or debit card at booking, so there is no cash handoff with the host. A security deposit is placed as a hold on your card before the trip (the amount is set by the host and shown on the listing, typically several hundred to a couple thousand dollars), and it is released after the trip ends, assuming no damage or policy violations. The deposit is separate from your booking payment and covers situations like unreported damage, excessive cleaning, or late returns. Pro tip: do a quick walkaround video with your host at both pickup and drop-off in Piedmont. It takes 3 minutes, protects everyone, and is the single best way to ensure your deposit is returned quickly.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360038106214-How-the-security-deposit-worksIs Piedmont a good spot for a family RV trip?
It's one of Alabama's best-kept family secrets. A family RV trip Piedmont parents love usually starts with the Chief Ladiga Trail (a paved 33-mile rail-trail running right from downtown Piedmont to the Georgia line, perfect for kids on bikes), then heads to Cheaha State Park for the easy Bald Rock boardwalk, swimming at the lake, and the CCC-era stone lodge. Add a day at Little River Canyon for waterfall views, and an afternoon on Weiss Lake (the Crappie Capital of the World) for fishing. The pace is slow, the crowds are small, and the prices are kind. Pro tip: pack the s'mores supplies. Coleman Lake's beach campfire ring is made for it.
