Campgrounds near Pinson, Alabama
Pinson sits in northern Jefferson County, about fifteen miles northeast of downtown Birmingham. The town works well as an RV base because it puts travellers within a short drive of two Alabama State Parks, private RV parks, and the trails, lakes, and dining of the greater Birmingham metro. Interstate 65 and Interstate 59 both pass within a half-hour, which makes arrivals and day trips straightforward.
Travellers looking for full hookups and easy access tend to choose private options like Carson Village Moblie Home and RV Park closer to Pinson, or Hoover RV Park on the south side of Birmingham. State park camping is available at Rickwood Caverns State Park near Warrior and at Oak Mountain State Park in Pelham, the largest state park in Alabama.
Oak Mountain also operates a separate Equestrian - Oak Mountain State Park campground for travellers bringing horses. Together these properties cover everything from small, quiet park loops to full-service sites suited to larger rigs.
Things to do near Pinson
Turkey Creek Nature Preserve, minutes from Pinson, is the local swimming and hiking draw, with rocky wading pools and short forest trails. Rickwood Caverns State Park adds guided cave tours through illuminated limestone formations and an Olympic-sized swimming pool open in the warm months.
At Oak Mountain State Park, families spend days on the beach at the swim lake, ride the paved and mountain-bike trails, fish for bass, bream, catfish, and crappie, and visit the Alabama Wildlife Center to see rehabilitated raptors. The Equestrian - Oak Mountain State Park campground gives horse owners direct trail access, with a dedicated dump station for horse waste.
Birmingham itself is close enough for a day trip: the Birmingham Zoo, McWane Science Center, the Civil Rights District, and Regions Field baseball are all within about thirty minutes of Pinson.

Spring runs from March through May and is the busiest booking window. Wildflowers, mild afternoons, and dogwoods bring weekend traffic to Oak Mountain and Rickwood Caverns, and holiday weekends fill early. Holiday weekends at Oak Mountain must be booked at least three months in advance, so plan Memorial Day and similar dates well ahead.
Summer is hot and humid, with afternoon thunderstorms common. Swimming pools, lakes, and cave tours become the main attractions because the caverns stay cool year-round, holding a steady temperature near the high fifties Fahrenheit. Sites with 30- or 50-amp service matter in this stretch for running air conditioning; Oak Mountain and Rickwood Caverns both offer 30 and 50-amp electrical hookups.
Fall brings cooler nights, drier weather, and colour along the ridges through October and November. Winter is short and mild but wet, and shoulder-season travellers should note that at Rickwood Caverns the showers are closed from November through February, though restrooms and the dump station remain available.
How to book campgrounds near Pinson
Alabama State Parks use a single reservation system. Bookings for Oak Mountain State Park, its Equestrian campground, and Rickwood Caverns State Park are all made through reserve.alapark.com or by calling the individual park office. Advance reservations may be made up to one year in advance, and a non-refundable reservation fee applies per campsite, with check-in at 2 PM and check-out at 11 AM.
Oak Mountain requires a two-night minimum on weekends, and holiday weekends must be booked at least three months out, so lock in those dates early. Private parks like Carson Village Moblie Home and RV Park and Hoover RV Park are booked directly with the operator by phone or through their websites, and monthly stays are more commonly available at private parks than at state park loops.
What to expect on the ground
State park sites near Pinson mix paved and gravel pads. Oak Mountain Campground offers 84 RV sites (57 with full hookups and 27 with water and electric) plus 66 tent sites, spread across loops with some pads better suited to large rigs and others tucked among trees for smaller setups. Cell coverage inside the park can be spotty depending on carrier, and train noise carries at night in some loops.
Rickwood Caverns is smaller and quieter, with 13 landscaped water-and-electric sites accommodating trailers and motor homes up to 40 feet long, and 5 primitive sites for tents. Sewer hookups are not at individual sites, but a dump station is available on site.
Expect humidity in summer, biting insects near water, and shaded terrain. Pets are welcome on leash across Alabama State Parks, but not in buildings or on swim beaches.

Frequently asked questions about campgrounds near Pinson, AL
How much does it cost to rent an RV in Pinson, AL?
RV rental in Pinson is a great value compared with hotel stays for a family or group trip. On RVezy, you'll typically find travel trailers starting around $90 to $150 per night, Class C motorhomes from roughly $175 to $275 per night, and larger Class A rigs from $250 and up. For a cheap RV rental Pinson trip, filter by travel trailers, message a host about multi-night discounts, and consider midweek pickups for the best rates.

Peak weekends (April through October, Memorial Day, July 4th, and Cheaha's fall foliage in mid-to-late October) often sell out quickly after release. For private RV parks like Hoover Met Complex RV Park or Birmingham South RV Park, 2 to 6 weeks ahead is usually fine. Insider tip: if you strike out at Oak Mountain, check the reservealapark.com portal regularly; cancellations happen often.
