Camping near Saks, Alabama
Saks is an unincorporated community in Calhoun County, just northwest of Anniston in northeast Alabama. The area sits at the southern end of the Appalachian foothills, with the Talladega National Forest and Cheaha Mountain rising to the south and Interstate 20 running east toward Atlanta and west toward Birmingham. RV travelers use Saks as a practical base for exploring both the mountains and the Talladega Superspeedway corridor.
Campground options within a short drive cover a range of styles. Cheaha State Park offers 77 full-hookup sites along with primitive, tent, group, and glamping safari-tent options, all surrounded by the Talladega National Forest. Closer to town, Scenic Drive RV Park and Campground provides a straightforward local option, while Talladega Pit Stop RV Park and Campground, GrandStand RV Park - Talladega Alabama, and Talladega Creekside Resort cluster near the superspeedway roughly half an hour south.
Improved sites in the area accept larger rigs, but mountain roads near Cheaha include tight curves and grades that favor experienced drivers.
Things to do near Saks
Cheaha State Park is the headline outdoor draw. The park sits on Cheaha Mountain, the highest point in Alabama at 2,407 feet, and is surrounded by the Talladega National Forest. Cheaha Lake offers swimming, a sandy beach, a playground, and paddle-boat and jon-boat rentals, and the park connects to the Pinhoti Trail system with routes leading to three waterfalls. On-site museums cover Civilian Conservation Corps history and regional Native American artifacts.
Motorsports fans center trips on Talladega Superspeedway, which hosts NASCAR spring and fall race weekends with on-track practice, qualifying, and headline races. The nearby Anniston and Oxford area adds the Berman Museum, the Anniston Museum of Natural History, and the Chief Ladiga Trail for cycling.

Spring and fall are the peak windows for RV travel around Saks. Daytime temperatures are comfortable, hardwood color shows up on the Cheaha ridge, and the NASCAR calendar drives strong demand for sites near the superspeedway. Cheaha State Park requires a two-night minimum on all weekends and a three-night minimum on Talladega race weekends and holidays, and private parks along the raceway corridor fill months ahead for those dates.
Summer runs hot and humid with frequent afternoon thunderstorms, and biting insects and heat push most hikers to early-morning starts. Cell service is limited on the mountain in any season.
Winter camping is possible but limited on the mountain. The lake area at Cheaha is winterized from November 1 through March, with no water or restrooms available in that stretch. Improved sites in the Upper Campground with full hookups remain open year-round, though freezing nights can require disconnecting from water hookups.
How to book near Saks
State park sites use the Alabama State Parks reservation system at alapark.com. Alabama residents can book 13 months in advance and out-of-state guests 12 months in advance, with the system verifying zip codes at booking and payment. Full payment is required to hold the reservation. Cheaha campground check-in is 2 PM and check-out is 11 AM, and cancellations must be made at least 72 hours before the check-in date to receive a refund; inside that window the payment is nonrefundable.
Private RV parks near Talladega, including Scenic Drive RV Park and Campground and the parks near the speedway, book separately through each operator. For race weekends, secure infield or trackside camping through the superspeedway ticket office and reserve nearby private parks as soon as the NASCAR schedule is published.
What to expect on arrival
At Cheaha, the Mountain Store handles check-in. Reservation confirmations include a gate code, and guests may go directly to the site to set up but must return to the Mountain Store to complete check-in and pick up a post pass and vehicle pass. Golf carts, ATVs, and other off-road vehicles are not allowed on Cheaha public roadways, though golf carts may be used inside the campgrounds.
Expect wooded, rolling terrain, generally shaded sites, and cell coverage that thins on the mountain. Bring layers even in summer, since evenings on the ridge run cooler than in Saks and Anniston below. Grocery and fuel stops are easiest in Oxford or Anniston before heading up.
Road choice matters for larger rigs. The park recommends Alabama Highway 281 (Talladega Scenic Drive), which is well-maintained and easily driven by large recreational vehicles, with Highway 49 also connecting to Highway 281. Cheaha Road from Munford winds through the forest with curves and uneven asphalt and is not recommended for large RVs.

Frequently asked questions about campgrounds near Saks, AL
How much does it cost to rent an RV in Saks, AL?
RV rental in Saks is one of the most affordable ways to vacation in northeast Alabama, with travel trailers often starting around $80 to $130 per night and Class C motorhomes typically running $175 to $250 per night. Pricing depends on the RV's age, size, and season, and Talladega Superspeedway race weekends (spring and fall) tend to push rates higher across Calhoun County. To find a cheap RV rental in Saks, book midweek, travel in shoulder seasons like March or October, and look for hosts offering unlimited mileage or free delivery to nearby campgrounds. Pro tip: many Saks-area hosts discount weekly stays, which is perfect if you're basing yourself near Cheaha State Park.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Saks,AlabamaDo I need a special license to rent an RV in Saks, Alabama?
Good news: Alabama does not require a special license or Commercial Driver's License (CDL) to drive a personal recreational vehicle, so your regular driver's license is all you need to rent an RV in Saks. You'll just need to be 25 or older to book on RVezy, and you'll verify your ID right through the platform during checkout. Visiting from another country? Pick up an International Driving Permit (IDP) from your home auto association before you fly in and pair it with your home license. Most first-time renters are surprised how simple the paperwork is, so you can focus on planning your route up Highway 281 to Cheaha Mountain instead.
alea.gov/dps/driver-license/license-and-id-cards/driver-licenses-classes-endorsements-and-restrictionsWhat protection is included when I rent an RV in Saks?
Every RV rental in Saks, AL booked through RVezy includes a renter protection plan plus 24/7 roadside assistance, so you can hit the road with real peace of mind. The protection plan covers most physical damage to the RV during your trip, and you choose the level of coverage that fits your comfort zone at checkout (hosts don't pick this for you). It's not auto insurance in the traditional sense, but it provides significant financial protection that's already built into your booking. Pro tip: review the included coverage details before you confirm your motorhome rental in Saks so you know exactly what's protected as you head toward Talladega National Forest.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/34008759079835-RVezy-renter-protection-plans-in-detailWhat is the cancellation policy if my Saks RV trip plans change?
You can book your RV rental in Saks with confidence because RVezy, not the individual host, sets the cancellation policy, and there's a money-back grace period after booking so you're never locked in the moment you click confirm. Refund eligibility after that depends on how far out from your trip you cancel and circumstances like severe weather events, which can roll through Calhoun County in spring storm season. Because the policy is standardized across listings, you won't see different terms from host to host. Pro tip: book early to secure the best RVs near Anniston for Talladega race weekends, knowing you have flexibility if life shifts your plans.

Absolutely, plenty of pet-friendly RV rental options in Saks welcome dogs and cats, and you can filter listings by the Pet-Friendly tag to see them instantly. Once you're on the road, Cheaha State Park allows leashed pets throughout the grounds and even has an on-site dog park, so your pup has a place to stretch out after the drive up the mountain. Talladega National Forest trails near Saks are also dog-friendly on leash. Pro tip: message the host before booking to confirm any pet fees and ask about their favorite local dog-friendly trails, since hosts in Calhoun County usually have great recommendations.
alapark.com/parks/cheaha-state-parkCan the RV be delivered to my campground near Saks?
Yes, RV delivery in Saks is one of the most popular options on RVezy, and many local hosts will drive the RV directly to your campground, set it up, level it, hook up power and water, and walk you through everything before they leave. That makes it perfect if you're a first-time renter or just want to skip driving a motorhome on I-20 through Oxford. Popular drop-off spots include Cheaha State Park (about 35 minutes south), Coleman Lake Campground in the Talladega National Forest, and private RV parks around Weiss Lake. Pro tip: filter for the Delivery option, then message hosts to confirm mileage to your specific site and any delivery fees up front.

Pro tip: fall foliage on Cheaha Mountain peaks in late October and early November, and the view from Bald Rock Boardwalk is unforgettable.
forecast.weather.gov/MapClick.php?CityName=Anniston&state=AL&site=BMXI've never rented an RV before. Will I be okay driving one around Saks?
You've got this, and first time renting an RV in Saks is easier than most people expect. Every host gives you a hands-on orientation at pickup, walking you through driving, leveling, hookups, the propane system, and the appliances before you ever pull away. Roads around Saks are friendly to beginners: US-431 and I-20 are wide and straightforward, and the Talladega Scenic Drive (AL-281) up to Cheaha is specifically recommended by Alabama State Parks for large recreational vehicles. Skip Cheaha Road (County Road 42) from Munford if you're driving a big rig, since it's narrow and winding. Pro tip: book delivery for your first trip so you can focus on enjoying camp instead of backing into a site.
alapark.com/parks/cheaha-state-parkWhat happens if something goes wrong with the RV during my trip?
You're never on your own. Every RV rental in Saks, AL booked through RVezy includes 24/7 roadside assistance as part of the renter protection plan, so a flat tire on I-20, a dead battery at Coleman Lake, or a tow off the Talladega Scenic Drive is just a phone call away. Your host is also your first call for anything RV-specific (think a quirky water pump or a finicky awning), and most local Saks hosts are quick to respond by message or phone. RVezy's customer support team is available before, during, and after your trip too. Pro tip: save the roadside assistance number to your phone before you leave the driveway, and you'll be set.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/34008759079835-RVezy-renter-protection-plans-in-detailCan I take my RV rental across state lines or into Canada from Saks?

Popular interstate runs include Atlanta (95 miles east on I-20), Chattanooga (140 miles north), the Great Smoky Mountains (around 230 miles), and the Gulf Coast at Gulf Shores (about 350 miles south). Travel into Canada may be allowed with advance host approval, so message the listing before booking if that's on your itinerary. Travel into Mexico is not permitted on RVezy rentals because protection coverage doesn't extend there. Pro tip: confirm your route in the message thread so your host can flag any height or weight considerations.

Class C motorhomes typically get 8 to 12 miles per gallon (MPG), Class A rigs 6 to 10 MPG, and campervans (Class B) often hit 15 to 20 MPG, while travel trailers depend on your tow vehicle. Alabama consistently has some of the lowest gas prices in the country, with stations along I-20 in Oxford and Anniston usually well below the national average. A round trip from Saks to Cheaha State Park (about 60 miles) burns just a few gallons, so weekend trips are very affordable. Pro tip: fuel up at the Pilot or Love's near the Oxford exit before heading into the Talladega National Forest, where stations thin out.

Alabama State Parks (including Cheaha) accept reservations up to one year in advance through the official Alapark reservation system, and the full-hookup sites at Cheaha frequently sell out 6 to 12 months ahead for spring weekends and Talladega Superspeedway race weeks (typically April and October). Coleman Lake Campground in Talladega National Forest is reserved through Recreation.gov, often 4 to 6 months out for summer. Private parks like Logan Landing usually have more flexibility within a few weeks. Pro tip: book a two-night minimum on weekends and three nights for race weekends, since those are required at Cheaha.
reserve.alapark.com/cheaha/campsitesWhat are local driving conditions like around Saks and Anniston?

I-20 runs just south of town and is a wide, well-maintained four-lane that connects you to Oxford, Anniston, Birmingham, and Atlanta with no toll roads. US-431 and AL-21 are the main local arteries and handle motorhomes easily. The one route to watch is Cheaha Road (County Road 42) from Munford, which is narrow and winding; instead, take the Talladega Scenic Drive (AL-281), which the park itself recommends for large RVs. Summer thunderstorms can roll through quickly between June and August. Pro tip: check the National Weather Service Birmingham forecast the morning of any mountain drive, since fog can settle on Cheaha's summit.

Many campervan rentals in Saks and larger Class C motorhomes also include a TV, Bluetooth stereo, and a generator or solar setup for off-grid camping at Coleman Lake or other Talladega National Forest sites. Wi-Fi is occasionally included or available as an add-on. Pro tip: review the listing's amenity list and message the host about linens and a starter propane tank, both of which many local hosts throw in for free.
alapark.com/parks/cheaha-state-parkWhat add-ons and pickup options are popular for Saks RV rentals?

Pickup is usually at the host's home in or near Saks, Anniston, or Oxford, with delivery available to most campgrounds within 30 to 60 miles. Pro tip: bundle delivery, setup, and a generator together if you're heading to Coleman Lake, where there are no electric hookups at every site.
fs.usda.gov/recarea/alabama/recarea/?recid=29317How does payment and the security deposit work for an RV rental in Saks?
Payment is straightforward and secure: you pay through RVezy at the time of booking using a credit or debit card, and the funds are held safely until your trip begins. No cash is exchanged with the host. Pro tip: do a quick walkthrough video at pickup and drop-off (interior, exterior, mileage, generator hours) so any questions about your RV rental in Alabama are easy to resolve quickly.
