Campgrounds near Steele, Alabama
Steele sits in St. Clair County in northeast Alabama, along the I-59 corridor between Gadsden and Birmingham. The area combines Appalachian foothills, sandstone bluffs on Chandler Mountain, and the Coosa River system, giving RV travelers a mix of lake, creek, and mountain camping within a short drive of town.
Horse Pens 40 is the marquee stop just outside Steele, a privately owned mountaintop park atop Chandler Mountain that is known internationally for its sandstone bouldering. Closer to the water, Greensport RV Park & Campground sits on Neely Henry Lake in nearby Ashville with full-hookup sites, and The Cove Lakeside RV Resort and Campground offers lakeside RV camping in the greater Gadsden area. Bigs Wills Creek Campground rounds out the options with creekside sites and on-property tubing access off Highway 77 in Attalla.
Most campgrounds in the area are privately owned rather than state or federal, which shapes reservation rules and seasonal openings. Steele itself is small, so groceries, fuel, and repair services are generally handled in nearby Ashville, Attalla, or Gadsden.
Things to do near Steele
Bouldering and hiking are the signature draws at Horse Pens 40, where a compact field of sandstone boulders on a mountaintop park draws climbers from around the world and gives families a maze of rocks to explore on foot. The park also hosts bluegrass festivals through the year, including a large Fourth of July event.
On the water, Neely Henry Lake is a Coosa River impoundment popular for bass, crappie, and catfish, with a boat ramp at Greensport RV Park & Campground and public access points nearby. Tubing on Big Wills Creek is a summer standard at Bigs Wills Creek Campground, with a float of roughly a mile and a quarter and shuttle service back to the property.
Day trips include Noccalula Falls Park in Gadsden and the Talladega National Forest to the south for longer hikes and scenic drives.

Spring and fall are the strongest windows for RV travel around Steele. March through May brings mild temperatures and blooming hardwoods, though it is also the peak severe-weather season in Alabama, with thunderstorm and tornado risk running highest in March and April. Fall carries cooler nights, lower humidity, and the area's driest stretch around September and October.
Summers are hot and humid, with daytime highs regularly near 90 and frequent afternoon thunderstorms. This is the busiest season for tubing at Bigs Wills Creek Campground and lake activity at Greensport RV Park & Campground and The Cove Lakeside RV Resort and Campground, so weekend sites book out well ahead.
Winters are short and generally mild, with occasional freezes and January and February on average the wettest months. Bouldering season at Horse Pens 40 peaks in the cooler months, when the sandstone friction is best, so climbers plan trips from fall through early spring.
How to book near Steele
The campgrounds near Steele are almost all privately operated, so reservations go directly through each park rather than through a central system like Recreation.gov or ReserveAmerica. Horse Pens 40 has moved toward a reservation-only camping model and takes bookings by phone, with a day-use fee collected at the on-site store for climbers and visitors.
Greensport RV Park & Campground, The Cove Lakeside RV Resort and Campground, and Bigs Wills Creek Campground each accept bookings through their own websites or by phone. Lakefront and pull-through sites at Greensport tend to fill first, especially on summer weekends and holidays.
For big-rig travelers, confirm site length and hookup amperage when booking. Local parks commonly offer 30 and 50 amp full-hookup service, but a few sites are shorter or back-in only.
What to expect on the ground
Terrain around Steele is rolling and wooded, with sandstone outcrops on the ridges and slower-moving creeks and reservoirs in the valleys. RV access is straightforward from I-59, and most nearby parks sit within a short drive of an interstate exit.
Cell coverage is generally reliable near the interstate and around Gadsden, but can weaken on the ridges near Horse Pens 40. Expect wooded, shaded sites in the mountain parks and more open lakefront sites at Greensport RV Park & Campground and The Cove Lakeside RV Resort and Campground.
Bring bug repellent for warm-season stays, especially near the creeks, and plan for occasional heavy rain and thunderstorms. Verify pet policies before booking, since some local parks restrict pets in certain areas.
