Camping near Sumiton, Alabama
Sumiton sits in Walker County in north-central Alabama, roughly 30 miles northwest of Birmingham on U.S. Highway 78. The town gives RV travelers a quiet base within reach of Bankhead National Forest, Lewis Smith Lake, and the caverns and reservoirs that line the Warrior River basin.
Campground options near Sumiton range from state park sites to private lakefront resorts. Rickwood Caverns State Park provides 13 developed campsites with water and electric hookups that accommodate trailers and motor homes up to 40 feet, plus 5 primitive tent sites, with restrooms, seasonal showers (closed November through February), and a dump station. Hidden Cove RV Resort and Carson Village Moblie Home and RV Park serve travelers looking for full-hookup sites closer to town.
For lake-based trips, Arrowhead RV Resort at Smith Lake offers lakefront or pondside campsites with full hookups, a boat dock, and a ramp for fishing and boating on Smith Lake. Hoover RV Park rounds out the list for RVers heading south toward the Birmingham metro area.
Things to do near Sumiton
The signature attraction is Rickwood Caverns. The park is centered on a limestone cave with 260-million-year-old formations, and guided cave tours, short on-site hiking trails, and swimming in an Olympic-sized pool fed by cavern waters are the main draws.
Water recreation centers on Lewis Smith Lake, a deep, clear reservoir known for striped bass, spotted bass, and crappie. Arrowhead RV Resort at Smith Lake provides direct access for boaters and anglers, and paddlers use the many coves for kayaking.
Day trips are easy from Sumiton. Birmingham museums, the Birmingham Zoo, and the Barber Vintage Motorsports Museum are within an hour, and Bankhead National Forest to the northwest has waterfalls and hiking on the Sipsey Wilderness trails.

Sumiton has long, hot, muggy summers and short, cool, wet winters, with partly cloudy skies year round. Spring and fall are the most comfortable stretches for RV travel, with mild days and cool nights. Spring also brings Alabama's peak severe-weather season, so campers should monitor NWS Birmingham forecasts and know each campground's shelter plan.
Summer is the busiest camping window. The spring-fed swimming pool at Rickwood Caverns is open in summer and provides relief from Alabama heat while cave tours run year-round, with surface highs in the mid-80s to mid-90s Fahrenheit but a constant cave temperature near 58 F. RV sites and tent spaces can fill quickly, particularly during spring and summer weekends.
Winter is the quiet season. Showers at Rickwood Caverns are closed November through February, and the park offers reduced-activity winter camping for those who do not need pool access. Freezing nights are possible, so RVers should be ready to protect water lines.
How to book campgrounds near Sumiton
Rickwood Caverns State Park uses the Alabama State Parks reservation system at alapark.com. Out-of-state visitors can book up to 12 months in advance, and Alabama residents can book up to 13 months in advance through the Alabama Residents Advanced Reservation Window. A non-refundable reservation fee applies per site. Weekend and holiday minimum-stay rules are common at Alabama state parks, so campers should confirm the current policy at booking.
Private parks book directly. Arrowhead RV Resort at Smith Lake accepts online reservations through its site and third-party platforms, and Hidden Cove RV Resort, Carson Village Moblie Home and RV Park, and Hoover RV Park handle bookings by phone or web form. For summer weekends and holidays, reserve several weeks ahead.
What to expect on arrival
Roads into Sumiton are paved two-lane highways with a few tight turns near lake campgrounds, so big-rig drivers should scout the last mile using satellite view. Cell service is generally reliable in town and thinner in the wooded pockets around Smith Lake and Bankhead.
At Rickwood Caverns, expect a compact state-park campground. Campsites are relatively close together with limited privacy, and there are no sewer hookups at individual sites, though a dump station is available. RV sites offer 30- and 50-amp electric with water, and are best suited to rigs 40 feet or shorter.
Private resorts on Smith Lake lean toward full-hookup sites with pools and boat access. Arrowhead RV Resort has full-hookup RV sites with 20, 30, and 50-amp power, a boat dock and ramp, a pool, a shower house, and a laundry room. Bring insect repellent, a surge protector, and a water pressure regulator.
