Campgrounds near Susan Moore, Alabama
Susan Moore is a small town in Blount County, north-central Alabama, sitting in the foothills of the southern Appalachians between Oneonta and the Sand Mountain plateau. The location puts RV travelers within about an hour of Chandler Mountain, Neely Henry Lake on the Coosa River, and the recreation corridor along Lake Guntersville, giving a wide mix of camping styles inside a short drive.
Options close in lean toward outdoor and lake-based stays. Horse Pens 40 is a privately owned outdoor nature park atop Chandler Mountain in St. Clair County near Steele, in the foothills of the Appalachian Mountains, and the park features both RV and primitive camping. To the northeast, Georgia Mountain RV Resort and Sand Mountain Park and Amphitheater serve travelers heading toward Guntersville and Albertville.
Along the Coosa River, Riverview Campground and Greensport RV Park & Campground offer full-hookup waterfront sites. Greensport sits on the shores of Neely Henry Lake at Historic Greensport, providing direct water access for fishing and boating.
Things to do near Susan Moore
Rock and trail activity anchors the area. Horse Pens 40 is known among the rock climbing community as a premier bouldering site in the American Southeast, and visitors can explore soaring rock formations, lush forests, meandering streams, and a twisting rock maze across roughly 2,000 acres. Kids can scramble on the boulders while adults tackle marked problems.
Water recreation fills the rest of the itinerary. Neely Henry Lake and the wider Coosa River system support fishing, boating, and swimming, with boat ramps at Greensport RV Park & Campground and Riverview Campground. Sand Mountain Park and Amphitheater in Albertville adds an indoor aquatic center, sports fields, and concert programming useful for a rainy day or a family break from the campsite.
Horse Pens 40 also hosts a Bluegrass Park with festivals several times a year, the biggest occurring on the Fourth of July, worth planning around.

Spring and fall are the strongest windows for RV travel in this part of Alabama. March through May brings mild days, blooming hardwoods, and the busiest bouldering season on Chandler Mountain. Fall carries cool nights, lower humidity, and the region's biggest bluegrass and climbing events, so weekend sites at Horse Pens 40 book out early around festival dates.
Summer is hot and humid, with afternoon thunderstorms common and heat index values often above 100°F. Lake-based parks along Neely Henry Lake stay busy through the season, and holiday weekends near the Fourth of July draw large crowds to Horse Pens 40 for its bluegrass festival. Reserve waterfront and shaded sites well ahead.
Winter is the quiet season. Most private RV parks along the Coosa River remain open year-round, but amenities can be reduced and hard freezes do occur, so cold-snap arrivals should carry drinking water and confirm hookup availability with the park before arriving.
How to book campgrounds near Susan Moore
Most campgrounds in this corridor are privately operated and take reservations directly through their websites or by phone. Horse Pens 40 handles camping through its park office, and festival and competition weekends should be booked months in advance. Georgia Mountain RV Resort and Sand Mountain Park and Amphitheater use their own online booking systems.
Along the river, Greensport RV Park & Campground and Riverview Campground list availability on their own sites and on third-party platforms. Greensport is a smaller developed park with a limited number of full-hookup sites, so lakeside weekends fill early in warm months.
Cancellation terms, deposit rules, and minimum-stay requirements vary by operator, so confirm each park's policy at the time of booking rather than assuming a common standard across the corridor.
What to expect on arrival
Sites near Susan Moore range from full-hookup RV pads to primitive tent areas. At Greensport, all sites have full hook-ups with 30/50 amp electric, water, and sewer, on a developed footprint that continues to expand. Horse Pens 40 lists about 125 sites at an elevation near 1,443 feet, so nights on Chandler Mountain run cooler than valley parks.
Roads to Horse Pens 40 climb narrow county roads with tight turns; larger rigs should scout the approach and consider arriving in daylight. Coosa River parks sit on flatter ground with easier big-rig access.
Expect standard bathhouses, laundry, and Wi-Fi at the private RV parks, plus playgrounds, pools, and boat ramps at the lakeside properties. Cell coverage is generally solid along the I-59 corridor and can be spotty on the mountaintop.
