Campgrounds and RV parks near Tarrant, AL

Oak Mountain State Park is Alabama's largest state park at nearly 10,000 acres and offers a cable wakeboarding park, marina rentals, an 18-hole golf course, two beaches, multiple fishing lakes, an archery range, a BMX area, the Alabama Wildlife Center, and horseback riding facilities. Trails span hiking, mountain biking, and equestrian use, and an amphitheater hosts seasonal concerts. Rickwood Caverns State Park lets visitors travel about 175 feet below the surface to tour limestone caverns that stay near 60 degrees year round, and the on-site Olympic-sized swimming pool is fed by cool cave water. The Fossil Mountain Hiking Trail winds past leaf and marine fossil imprints in the rocks, and kids can pan for gemstones at the gift shop. In Birmingham itself, expect civil rights history sites, minor-league baseball, and Sloss Furnaces, all within a short drive of Tarrant.

Peak season at Oak Mountain State Park runs from March through October, and holiday weekends fill fastest. Beach concessions and canoe, kayak, and boat rentals are available in the warmer months, so families planning water activities should aim for late spring through early fall. Weekends and major holidays during peak season require a two- or three-night minimum stay. Summer brings heat and humidity. Alabama's summer conditions can be challenging from June through September, with daytime temperatures regularly exceeding 90°F and high humidity. At Rickwood Caverns, the caves provide a cool break, and the spring-fed pool is only open in the warmer months. Rickwood's seasonal showers are closed November through February. Fall brings milder temperatures and lower humidity, and winter is the quietest stretch. The state park campgrounds stay open year round, so winter visits mean minimal crowds, but overnight temperatures can dip close to freezing. Alabama sees a secondary severe-weather season in November and December alongside the primary spring severe-weather period, so monitor forecasts on shoulder-season trips.

State-park campgrounds in the area are well-maintained but vary in feel. Oak Mountain's campground was renovated in 2024, sits next to Beaver Lake, and offers about 150 single-family sites including 62 full-hookup RV sites with 50-amp service, plus water-and-electric and tent sites. Amenities include potable water, flush toilets, hot-water showers, laundry, an RV dump station, a playground, beach, fishing pier, and camp store. Rickwood Caverns offers 13 water-and-electric RV sites suitable for trailers up to 40 feet and 5 primitive tent sites. Campsites are close together with limited privacy and there are no sewer hookups at individual sites, though a dump station is available. Hoover RV Park is essentially a paved lot at a sports complex: 170 asphalt pull-through sites with water, sewer, 20/30/50-amp power, trash service, and wifi. It is convenient and level, but not a nature setting, and there are no on-site bathhouses or showers.
