Neely Henry Lake, an impoundment of the Coosa River managed by Alabama Power, forms the primary water attraction closest to town.
Closest to Tidmore Bend is River Rocks Landing, situated right on the Coosa River in Gadsden with sites directly on the riverfront. Other nearby options include The Cove Lakeside RV Resort and Campground, Joyland RV Park in Leesburg, and Bigs Wills Creek Campground in Attalla. North-central Alabama has a long camping season. The moderate humid-subtropical climate lets many private parks in the area stay open year-round with no formal off-season. Spring and fall are the most comfortable stretches for RV travel, with mild days and cool evenings that suit outdoor cooking and lake activity.
Summer is peak family season. Expect hot, humid afternoons, warm lake water, and busy weekends at the riverfront parks. Site availability tightens on holiday weekends, so reserve early for Memorial Day, Independence Day, and Labor Day. Afternoon thunderstorms are common and can be intense.
Winter stays mild by North-American standards, but it is the wettest stretch of the year and severe weather does occur. The Gadsden area sees occasional severe thunderstorms and tornadoes, most often in spring and fall. RV travelers should track forecasts, and some parks in the region, including River Rocks Landing, maintain on-site storm shelters.
How to book
Most campgrounds near Tidmore Bend are privately operated and take reservations directly through their own websites, by phone, or through third-party booking platforms such as RoverPass or Good Sam. There is no single central reservation system covering the region, so plan on booking each park individually.
For summer weekends and any holiday, reserve well in advance. Riverfront sites at River Rocks Landing and lakeside sites at The Cove Lakeside RV Resort and Campground and Greensport RV Park and Campground tend to book out first. Smaller parks like Joyland RV Park and Bigs Wills Creek Campground have limited inventory and can fill quickly around events in Gadsden.
Check each park's policies on rig length, pets, tents, and cancellation before booking, since some parks in the area are RV-only and do not accept tent campers.
What to expect
Expect a mix of resort-style RV parks and smaller family-run campgrounds rather than large public campgrounds. Sites are typically full hookup with 30/50-amp electric, water, and sewer, and most parks offer both pull-through and back-in options. Many parks host long-term and seasonal residents alongside short-stay travelers, which keeps grounds active but can mean tighter site spacing.
At River Rocks Landing, some interior sites sit close together, and reviewers note that pull-throughs can be narrow and some back-in spots short for very large rigs. Confirm site dimensions when booking a big fifth wheel or Class A.
Cell coverage is generally reliable near Gadsden and Leesburg. Wi-Fi quality varies by park, so travelers who need to work remotely should plan for a hotspot as backup.
