Campgrounds and RV parks near Trafford, AL

Rickwood Caverns State Park is the headline attraction: guided walking tours travel roughly 175 feet below ground through 260-million-year-old limestone formations, and the cave stays a steady 58 to 62 degrees Fahrenheit year round. Above ground, the park has an Olympic-sized swimming pool fed by cave water, the Fossil Mountain Hiking Trail, a playground, and gemstone panning near the gift shop. Smith Lake, reached from Arrowhead RV Resort at Smith Lake, is the regional center for bass fishing, boating, and swimming. Horse Pens 40 draws climbers to sandstone boulder problems on Chandler Mountain and hosts bluegrass festivals several times a year, with its largest event held on the Fourth of July. Downtown Birmingham, a short drive south, adds museums, the Birmingham Zoo, and Regions Field for rainy-day plans.

Central Alabama has a humid subtropical climate with hot summers, mild winters, and rain spread across the year. Spring and fall are the most comfortable windows for RV travel, with daytime highs in the 70s Fahrenheit and lower humidity than midsummer. Spring is also a busy period at Rickwood Caverns, so book campsites and cave tours well in advance. Summer is hot and humid, with average July highs in the low 90s Fahrenheit and frequent afternoon thunderstorms. The cave interior and Rickwood's spring-fed pool are useful heat escapes; lake campgrounds fill on weekends. Alabama State Parks close showers at Rickwood from November through February, which is worth planning around. Winters are mild but wet, with rainfall spread fairly evenly through the cool months. Northern and central Alabama sit in a corridor prone to severe thunderstorms and tornadoes, with a primary spring season and a secondary late-fall season, so travelers should monitor NWS Birmingham alerts and know each campground's shelter plan.

Rickwood Caverns offers 13 improved sites with water and electric hookups, restrooms, and a dump station, plus five primitive sites and a group camp. Showers are seasonal and closed from November through February. Nine of the developed sites are landscaped and can accommodate trailers and motor homes up to about 40 feet, with 30- and 50-amp service. Maximum camping stay is 14 nights, extended to 31 nights at select parks between November 1 and March 31. Arrowhead RV Resort provides 20/30/50-amp full hookups, a pool, laundry, showers, and a boat dock and ramp. Horse Pens 40 is more rustic, with primitive tent sites, RV sites with water and 30-amp electric, bathhouses, and an on-site country store; the terrain is rocky and sloped, so scout your site on arrival. Cell coverage is reliable near I-65 corridors and thinner on Chandler Mountain and in the Smith Lake coves.
