Camping near Trussville, Alabama
Trussville sits just northeast of Birmingham in Jefferson County, putting RV travelers within a short drive of several state parks and private RV parks along the I-59 and I-65 corridors. The city works well as a base for exploring the Birmingham metro, the southern Appalachian foothills, and the karst country north of town.
The closest full-service option to downtown Trussville is Carson Village Moblie Home and RV Park. South of the city near Pelham, Oak Mountain State Park offers the largest campground in the area, and the same park runs a separate Equestrian - Oak Mountain State Park loop for travelers hauling horses. Hoover RV Park provides another private option on the south side of the metro.
For a shorter drive north, Rickwood Caverns State Park in Blount County adds cave tours and a spring-fed pool to a small but developed campground, making it a practical overnight for families heading toward Cullman or Huntsville.
Things to do near Trussville
Oak Mountain State Park is the anchor activity. The park covers 9,940 acres, making it the largest state park in the state, with hiking, mountain biking, a lake beach, fishing, and the Alabama Wildlife Center on site. Beach concessions and canoe, kayak, and boat rentals typically run over the summer.
Rickwood Caverns State Park adds an underground option. Travelers can go 175 feet below the surface to tour the caves, where the climate stays a comfortable 60 degrees year round, and an Olympic-size swimming pool is fed by the chilly waters from the cave. The park also runs a Fossil Mountain hiking trail and gemstone mining for kids.
In Trussville itself, the Cahaba River, the Trussville Sports Complex, and easy access to Birmingham attractions such as the Civil Rights Institute, Sloss Furnaces, and Barons baseball round out a family itinerary.
