Campgrounds and RV parks near Wadley, AL

Fishing drives most trips to this corner of Alabama. Bass are frequently targeted at Harris Reservoir around the lake's rocky points using medium to deep diving crankbaits and Carolina-rigged soft plastics, and Wedowee Creek is one of the more fertile largemouth tributaries on the Little Tallapoosa River. The lake also holds crappie, spotted bass, striped bass, hybrid striper, and channel and flathead catfish. Gold panning is the other regional draw. Alabama Gold Camp offers creek access for panning, sluicing, dredging, high-banking, and metal detecting, with equipment rentals available on site through the general store. For hiking and scenic drives, Cheaha State Park is roughly an hour north. The park sits on the southernmost tip of the Appalachian Mountain chain at 2,407 feet above sea level and is surrounded by the Talladega National Forest, including the 7,245-acre Cheaha Wilderness.

The area follows a humid subtropical pattern. Summers are hot and muggy, winters are short, cold, and wet, and temperatures typically vary from about 36°F to 89°F over the year. Spring and fall are the most comfortable windows for RV camping, with lower humidity and cooler nights. Summer is peak boating season on Lake Wedowee, and heat plus afternoon thunderstorms are the norm. Shellcracker and bluegill fishing can be very good around the spring mayfly hatch, which can occur from late May through August depending on weather and water temperature. Fall brings foliage in the surrounding Piedmont hills and lighter crowds at both private parks and state park campgrounds. Winter camping is possible but comes with caveats at higher-elevation parks. The lake area at Cheaha is winterized from November 1 to March, and no water or restrooms are available during that stretch. A three-night minimum stay is also required on Talladega race weekends and all holidays, so schedule around NASCAR dates if flexibility matters.

This is small-town, rural Alabama. Cell service can be spotty at wooded campgrounds, and grocery runs mean short drives to Wedowee, Roanoke, or Lineville. Reviews of Alabama Gold Camp consistently note limited to no cell coverage on site, with Wi-Fi available near the general store. Access roads to prospecting and creek-side camps can be tight. Gravel drives can be narrow, steep, and rutted in spots, and sites at the smaller camps are often close together with trees on the shoulders. Larger Class A rigs should call ahead to confirm site dimensions and turning room. For mountain trips, route planning matters. Cheaha State Park recommends the Talladega Scenic Drive (Alabama Highway 281), which is well-maintained and accommodates large recreational vehicles, and advises against Cheaha Road for large RVs.
