Camping around Walnut Grove is a year-round proposition thanks to the humid subtropical climate, but each season has its own character. Spring brings mild temperatures and the region's wettest stretch, with March typically the rainiest month and afternoon thunderstorms common. It is also the peak of tornado season across northern Alabama, so campers should watch forecasts closely and pick sites with sturdy shelter nearby. Summer runs long, hot, and humid, with July highs around 90 degrees. This is the busiest stretch for lakeside parks and for events at Sand Mountain Park and Amphitheater, and holiday weekends such as Memorial Day, the Fourth of July, and Labor Day fill quickly at Horse Pens 40 and The Cove Lakeside RV Resort and Campground. Fall is often the most comfortable season for RVers, with cooler nights, lower rainfall, and prime bouldering weather on Chandler Mountain. Winters are short but can be cold and damp, with occasional freezes; some private parks stay open year-round, while amenities like pools shut down until spring.

Sites in the area range from full-hookup RV resorts to rustic, first-come, first-served spots.
