Camping near Wedowee, Alabama
Wedowee sits in Randolph County in east-central Alabama, on the shores of Lake Wedowee, a roughly 10,600-acre reservoir formed by the R.L. Harris Dam on the Tallapoosa River. The lake, the surrounding Piedmont foothills, and the nearby Talladega National Forest give RV travelers a mix of shoreline camping, mountain camping, and small-town base camps. Atlanta and Birmingham are each roughly ninety minutes away, which makes Wedowee a common weekend destination for families from both metro areas.
Close-in options include Big Fish At Wedowee RV Park, a small family-run park near the lake, and Cane Creek RV Park and Campground, a lakeside campground on a creek arm of Lake Wedowee. Scenic Drive RV Park and Campground rounds out the local private-park choices.
For travelers willing to drive a bit farther, Alabama Gold Camp near Lineville pairs RV sites with recreational gold panning, and Cheaha State Park, on the highest point in Alabama inside the Talladega National Forest, offers full-hookup, primitive, and rustic tent camping run by Alabama State Parks.
Things to do around Wedowee
Lake Wedowee is the main draw. The reservoir covers roughly 10,600 acres and is used for bass fishing, boating, tubing, skiing, and wakeboarding, with public boat ramps scattered around the shoreline. Cane Creek RV Park and Campground and Big Fish At Wedowee RV Park both put RV travelers within easy reach of the water.
Off the lake, Cheaha State Park has hiking trails to the state's highest point, a dog park, a small lake with a swim beach, and museums covering the CCC-era history of the park. The Pinhoti Trail runs through the surrounding Talladega National Forest for longer hikes.
Alabama Gold Camp, near Lineville, lets guests pan, sluice, high-bank, and metal-detect along creeks in Alabama's historic gold belt, with equipment rentals available on site. Talladega Superspeedway is roughly forty-five minutes west for race-weekend visitors.

Summers in Wedowee are long, hot, and humid, with July highs averaging near 89°F and heat-index values that regularly push past 100°F. This is peak lake season: boat traffic is heavy on weekends, and lakeside sites at parks like Cane Creek RV Park and Campground book up well ahead of Memorial Day, July 4th, and Labor Day. Talladega race weekends also drive demand throughout the region, and minimum-stay requirements often apply at Cheaha State Park on race weekends and holidays.
Spring and fall are the most comfortable stretches for RV travel. Highs run from the 60s into the low 80s, humidity drops, and fall foliage on Cheaha Mountain typically peaks in late October and early November. Rain is spread across the year, with spring the wettest stretch and severe thunderstorms possible from March through May.
Winters are short and mild but wet, with January highs around 52°F. Most lake-area private parks stay open year-round, though shoulder-season amenities and lake water levels can be reduced.
How to book campgrounds near Wedowee
Cheaha State Park reservations are handled through the Alabama State Parks system at reserve.alapark.com. Campsites can be booked up to one year in advance for out-of-state guests and up to thirteen months in advance for Alabama residents through the resident advance-reservation window. A non-refundable reservation fee applies per site, the maximum camping stay is fourteen nights, and cancellations must be made at least seventy-two hours before check-in. Confirmation emails include gate codes, and check-in is completed at the Mountain Store.
Private parks around Lake Wedowee, including Big Fish At Wedowee RV Park, Cane Creek RV Park and Campground, and Scenic Drive RV Park and Campground, are booked directly with the campground by phone or through their websites. Alabama Gold Camp also reserves RV sites, cabins, and prospecting shacks directly. For summer weekends and race weekends, book two to three months out.
What to expect on the ground
This is rural east-central Alabama. Cell service is spotty away from the towns of Wedowee, Lineville, and Ashland, and some campgrounds, including Alabama Gold Camp, note limited or no reliable cell coverage on site. Wi-Fi is offered at several of the parks. Grocery runs, propane, and fuel are easiest in Wedowee and along US-431.
Lake-area RV parks are generally small and family-run. Expect a quiet, low-key atmosphere rather than a resort experience. Cheaha State Park has 77 full-hookup sites plus 26 primitive sites and 28 rustic tent sites, with a lodge, cabins, and a store on the mountain.
Roads into some campgrounds are narrow rural county routes. Larger Class A rigs should confirm access and turn-in clearance with the campground before arrival, and GPS routing near Alabama Gold Camp should be checked against the operator's directions.

alapark.com/parks/cheaha-state-park/campgroundsWhen is the best time of year to rent an RV in Wedowee?
Wedowee is a true three-season RV destination, with April through October being the sweet spot. Spring brings highs in the 70s and dogwoods blooming along Highway 48. Summer (June to August) is peak lake season with highs in the upper 80s to low 90s and warm water for swimming, tubing, and wakeboarding on the roughly 10,600-acre R.L. Harris Reservoir. Fall is magic: October temps in the 70s, fewer crowds, and brilliant foliage in the surrounding Talladega foothills. Winters are mild (40s to 50s) but lake amenities slow down. Insider tip: the weekend after Labor Day is sunny, warm, and far less crowded than July 4th.
weather.gov/bmx/I've never rented an RV before. Will I be okay?

help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360039340074-Insurance-coverage-validityWhat should I budget for fuel on a Wedowee RV trip?
Fuel is one of your biggest variables, so plan smart. Most Class C motorhomes around Wedowee average 8 to 10 miles per gallon, Class B campervans get 15 to 20 MPG, and travel trailers typically reduce your tow vehicle's economy by 30 to 40 percent. Alabama gas prices tend to run below the national average, which helps. For a weekend loop around Lake Wedowee with a side trip to Cheaha State Park (roughly 150 miles total), budget about $60 to $90 in a Class C. Fill up in Wedowee or Roanoke before heading into the Talladega National Forest, where stations are sparse.
eia.gov/petroleum/gasdiesel/How far in advance should I book a campground near Wedowee?

Cheaha State Park, one of the best campgrounds near Wedowee for mountain views, accepts reservations up to one year ahead through alapark.com, with a non-refundable reservation fee and a two-night weekend minimum. For mid-week spring or fall stays, 2 to 4 weeks ahead is usually fine. Insider tip: Sunday through Thursday nights are easier to book and significantly quieter on the water.
alapark.com/parks/cheaha-state-park/campgroundsWhat are the driving conditions like around Wedowee?
Driving around Wedowee is refreshingly easy compared to most RV destinations. Highway 431 (the main route through town) and Highway 48 (which crosses Lake Wedowee at the 48 Bridge) are wide two-lane roads with gentle grades and minimal traffic. The local terrain is rolling foothills, not steep mountain passes, so even a larger Class A handles fine. Watch for occasional summer afternoon thunderstorms in July and August, and deer at dusk on rural county roads. If you're driving up to Cheaha State Park, take Alabama Highway 281 (the Talladega Scenic Drive), which is RV-friendly.
