Campgrounds and RV parks near Wilsonville, AL

Lay Lake drives most of the recreation calendar. Boat ramps, marinas, and bass fishing dominate the shoreline, and the lake regularly hosts tournament series on the Alabama Bass Trail. Swimming, tubing, and pontoon days are common from late spring through early fall. Oak Mountain State Park adds a very different set of options within a short drive: mountain biking, hiking on ridge trails, a demonstration farm, a treetop nature trail, and paddling on Beaver Lake and Lake Tranquility. Seasonal beach areas and boat, canoe, and kayak rentals operate in summer. Historic stops round out a family trip. Kymulga Grist Mill and Park preserves a 19th-century mill and covered bridge, and downtown Birmingham museums are within an hour for a rainy-day plan.

Peak season at parks in this part of central Alabama runs March through October, with the heaviest bookings from Memorial Day through Labor Day. Oak Mountain State Park sits just outside Birmingham, so its campground fills quickly on summer weekends and holidays. Weekends and major holidays during peak season typically require a two-night minimum stay, and holiday weekends should be booked at least three months out. Spring brings mild temperatures, wildflowers, and steady bass fishing on Lay Lake, along with occasional severe thunderstorms. Summer is hot and humid with frequent afternoon thunderstorms; lake use peaks and beach areas and boat rentals operate at Oak Mountain. Fall cools gradually, crowds thin, and hardwood color builds through late October and early November. Winter is the quiet season. The park and its campground stay open year-round, temperatures can dip near freezing at night, and monthly off-season stays are common at private RV resorts on Lay Lake.

Check-in at Oak Mountain State Park campsites is 2 PM and check-out is 11 AM, with a separate gate entry fee on top of the camping charge. The main campground is a drive from the front gate along winding park roads, so allow extra time after passing the gatehouse. Sites are split between wooded loops with better privacy and open loops that suit larger rigs, and full-hookup and water/electric options are available. The Equestrian Campground has 12 sites with 50-amp service, water, sewer, fire rings, picnic tables, and covered horse stalls; guests bring their own shavings. Private Lay Lake parks lean toward pull-through sites with water, sewer, and 30/50-amp power, plus boat parking. Larger grocery runs are easiest in Pelham or Birmingham.
