Campgrounds near Wilton, Alabama
Wilton sits in Shelby County in central Alabama, roughly 30 miles south of Birmingham and a short drive from Interstate 65. The area works well as an RV base for exploring the industrial-heritage parks of the Cahaba River watershed, plus the larger attractions around greater Birmingham and Tuscaloosa.
The closest camping option is Brierfield Ironworks Historical State Park, a small state historical park with a campground built around the ruins of a 19th-century iron furnace. The state park campground accommodates rigs up to 70 feet with electric, water, and sewer connections, plus a dump station, and amenities include nice bathhouses, a camp store stocked with basic items and snacks, and an inviting inground swimming pool. Private options in the corridor include Rolling Hills RV Park in Calera, Birmingham South RV Park in Pelham, and Peach Queen Campground just off I-65 in Jemison.
Farther west, Tannehill Ironworks Historical State Park is located in McCalla, Alabama, about 30 miles southwest of Birmingham, and features the historic Tannehill Ironworks, which supplied iron for the Confederate ordnance. Together these five properties cover most RV needs, from full-hookup pull-throughs to primitive tent sites.
Things to do near Wilton
Both historical state parks are destinations in their own right. Tannehill Ironworks Historical State Park has more than 1,500 acres in three counties set aside for hiking, camping and outdoor recreation, a miniature railroad chugs through the pines, and from spring through fall the blacksmith, miller and craftsmen demonstrate their trades. Visitors can enjoy hiking, biking, fishing, train rides, and exploring the local attractions.
At Brierfield, campers can walk to the furnace ruins, swim in the park pool, and follow short trails along the creek. The park hosts a calendar of events including flea markets, movie nights, and traditional black powder shooting, with hands-on workshops, furnace ruins, and natural trails that showcase Alabama's industrial heritage.
On-site fishing lakes at Peach Queen and Rolling Hills give families a low-key option without breaking camp, and Oak Mountain State Park in Pelham adds mountain biking, swimming, and a longer trail network within a short drive.

Central Alabama has a humid subtropical climate, so camping is possible year-round but comfort varies. Birmingham experiences a humid subtropical climate, characterized by hot summers and cool winters, the area is wet overall with rainfall spread fairly evenly throughout the year though spring is typically the wettest season, and occasional snowfall occurs in winter. All five listed campgrounds operate year-round.
Spring and fall are the sweet spots for RV travel. Daytime highs are moderate, humidity drops, and the state parks run their fullest event calendars. Spring also brings a real severe-weather season: central Alabama sits in a corridor where tornadoes and strong thunderstorms are common from March through May, so travelers should watch NOAA alerts and know each campground's shelter plan.
Summer temperatures in central Alabama regularly exceed 90°F with high humidity, making spring and fall the most comfortable camping seasons. Shaded, creek-side sites at Brierfield and Tannehill are worth requesting in July and August. Winter stays are mild but wet; freezing nights happen but rarely last, and water lines at rural campgrounds can briefly freeze during cold snaps.
Booking and how to reserve
Reservation systems vary sharply between the parks near Wilton, and this matters if trips fall on a holiday or event weekend. At Brierfield Ironworks Historical State Park, reservations are available year-round, and pets are welcome throughout the campground. Book direct through the park's website or by phone.
Tannehill offers over 250 campsites with a range of amenities from full hook-ups to primitive settings, and operates on a first-come, first-served policy, allowing campers to secure a site upon arrival without reservations. Sites are often completely filled during Halloween, as trick-or-treating has become a local tradition at the park. Arrive earlier in the day for Trade Days weekends and fall festival dates.
The private parks, Rolling Hills RV Park, Birmingham South RV Park, and Peach Queen Campground, all take advance reservations by phone or through online booking platforms. Holiday weekends and I-65 travel corridors fill up, so lock in dates well ahead for Memorial Day, July 4, and Labor Day.
What to expect
Sites in this part of Alabama tend to be wooded and level, with a mix of gravel and grass pads. Tannehill offers 195 improved campsites divided into three areas with water and electricity supported by two bathhouses and several dump stations, the campground can handle trailers both large and small, and there is also a separate area for 100 primitive tent camping sites. Campgrounds 1 and 2 offer full hook-ups with many outer sites backing up to a scenic creek, and Campground 3 has water and electric only.
At private parks, expect big-rig-friendly pull-throughs and full hookups. Peach Queen Campground provides full hookup RV and tent camping on grass and dirt sites just off Interstate 65 next to a fueling station. Rolling Hills sits in a wooded, hilly setting with two on-site fishing lakes and a seasonal pool for RV guests.
Cell coverage is generally usable but varies by carrier and site location, especially in the state-park hollows. Bring a hotspot if remote work matters.
