Campgrounds and RV parks near Talkeetna, AK

Talkeetna sits at the confluence of the Susitna, Chulitna, and Talkeetna rivers along the George Parks Highway, roughly a two-and-a-half hour drive north of Anchorage. It serves as the launch point for expeditions and flightseeing to Denali, and it is a common overnight stop for RV travelers heading north toward Denali National Park. Campgrounds in the immediate area fall into two categories. In town, Talkeetna Camper Park offers hookups within walking distance of the historic district, restaurants, and the ranger station. South along the Parks Highway, Montana Creek Campground and the neighboring Montana Creek State Recreation Site provide creekside sites popular with anglers, while Trapper Creek Inn RV Park sits west of the Susitna River on the way toward the Petersville Road. For RVers willing to drive an hour north, Kesugi Ken in Denali State Park is the newest developed campground in the corridor, with electric RV sites, cabins, and trail access to views of the Alaska Range.

Booking systems vary by campground. Kesugi Ken and other Alaska State Park campgrounds use ReserveAmerica; reservations open up to seven months in advance and must be made at least four days before arrival, with any remaining sites released as first-come first-served. A non-refundable reservation fee is added to the site charge. Montana Creek Campground and the adjacent Montana Creek State Recreation Site are both operated by the same private concessionaire. Reservations for both are made through the Montana Creek Campground website. Private parks in and around Talkeetna, including Talkeetna Camper Park and Trapper Creek Inn RV Park, book directly through the operator. Summer weekends and the king salmon opener fill fast, so plan several months out for July stays.
