Campgrounds near York, Arizona
York is a small census-designated place in Greenlee County, southeastern Arizona, sitting along Arizona State Route 75 about 12 miles south of Clifton and 16 miles north of Duncan. Most RV travelers use York as a quiet base for exploring the Gila River valley, the copper-mining district around Morenci, and the Pinaleño Mountain range to the west. The closest full-service RV hubs are in and around Safford, roughly a 45-minute drive by way of SR 75 and U.S. 70.
RV parks in the immediate area range from small stopovers to larger snowbird resorts. Valley View RV Park and Double T Catwalk Resort sit closest to the York and Clifton corridor, while Lexington Pines Resort, LLC, Safford RV Resort, and Alaskan RV Park cluster near Safford and provide the standard hookup, laundry, and dump-station facilities most travelers expect.
The region combines high-desert scenery with easy access to public land. The 23,000-acre Gila Box Riparian National Conservation Area lies to the north, and Roper Lake State Park sits south of Safford at the base of Mount Graham, giving RV travelers a mix of resort-style and outdoor-focused options within a short drive.
Things to do near York
The Gila Box Riparian National Conservation Area is the headline attraction. The 23,000-acre Gila Box Riparian National Conservation Area includes four perennial waterways, the Gila and San Francisco rivers and Bonita and Eagle creeks, and is a very special riparian ecosystem abounding with plant and animal diversity. Canoeing, kayaking, and rafting enthusiasts take advantage of the spring runoff to enjoy an easy to moderately difficult floating adventure down the Gila. The Bonita Creek Watchable Wildlife Viewing Area and the Black Hills Back Country Byway are also popular.
Roper Lake State Park, south of Safford at the base of Mount Graham, offers a swimming beach, a natural stone hot tub, an accessible fishing dock, and a boat ramp limited to small electric motors. Roper Lake has Largemouth bass, crappie, bluegill, sunfish, catfish, and Rainbow trout.
Mount Graham and the Pinaleño Mountains climb over 10,000 feet, giving day-trip access to alpine forest, hiking trails, and the Mount Graham International Observatory. In town, Safford anchors the Arizona Salsa Trail, with family-run eateries, a tortilla factory, and a chile farm.

Fall and spring are the practical windows for RV travel around York. Daytime highs stay comfortable, overnight lows are cool but not usually freezing, and the Gila corridor is at its most photogenic when cottonwoods turn gold in late fall. Spring brings wildflowers along Bonita Creek and the best water levels on the Gila for floating.
Winter is mild by North-American standards, and Safford-area RV resorts fill with snowbirds from roughly November through March. Freezing nights are possible in December and January, so cold-weather RV prep matters. The Gila Box conservation area is open year-round, and Roper Lake State Park is open year-round.
Summer is the season to plan around. In Safford, the summers are sweltering and partly cloudy, and over the course of the year the temperature typically varies from 35°F to 101°F and is rarely below 26°F or above 107°F. The North American Monsoon arrives in early summer and drives most of the year's rainfall through August, bringing thunderstorms, flash floods on desert washes, and dust storms. Flooding may occur during winter and summer rainy seasons, as well as during spring run-off.
How to book near York
Private RV parks near York and Safford, including Valley View RV Park, Double T Catwalk Resort, Lexington Pines Resort, LLC, Safford RV Resort, and Alaskan RV Park, take reservations directly by phone or through their own websites. Snowbird season runs roughly November through March and monthly sites can be committed months in advance, so book early for extended winter stays.
Roper Lake State Park uses the Arizona State Parks reservation system. Campsite reservations are available online or by calling the Arizona State Parks Reservations Desk at (877) MY-PARKS, seven days a week from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Arizona time. Reservations for weekend use will be for a minimum of 2 nights, and holidays will be for a minimum of 3 nights.
BLM campgrounds in the Gila Box, Riverview and Owl Creek, are first-come, first-served with self-pay fee stations and no online reservations.
What to expect near York
York itself is small and residential, so travelers should treat it as a launching point rather than a destination with services. Safford, to the west, is where to fuel up, resupply groceries, do laundry, and find veterinarians or medical care. Clifton, just to the north, has limited services but is the gateway to the Morenci mine overlook and the Coronado Trail.
Roads to developed sites are paved and passenger-car friendly. Access into parts of the Gila Box is different. All of the roads within the conservation area are gravel and dirt. The main roads can be navigated by smaller cars and RVs. Many of the side roads are primitive and tend to be rougher, and high clearance vehicles with four-wheel drive are recommended in many areas. You can usually get to major access points by passenger car, but other roads may be rough at times because of infrequent maintenance, and you will need a four-wheel-drive vehicle on many roads.
Cell service is spotty once off the main highways, so download offline maps before heading into backcountry areas.
