Campgrounds near Hughes overview
Hughes sits in the Arkansas Delta of St. Francis County, roughly 30 miles southwest of Memphis and a short drive from the Mississippi River. The town itself has no developed campgrounds, so RV travelers typically base themselves at parks strung along the river corridor and up on Crowley's Ridge. The closest full-service options cluster around West Memphis and the Tunica casino strip, with two state parks within about an hour for travelers who want forest and lakes instead of pavement.
Tom Sawyer's RV Park, West Memphis AR sits directly on the Mississippi River across from Memphis, Tennessee, roughly 15 minutes from downtown. Sams Town Gambling Hall RV Park and Hollywood Casino Hotel and RV Park are attached to Tunica-area casinos south of Memphis and cater to travelers who want hookups plus on-site dining and entertainment.
For a quieter, wooded stay, Village Creek State Park encompasses nearly 7,000 acres of forested hills and clear streams, with 33 miles of multi-use trails, campgrounds with bathhouses, an equestrian campground, 10 cabins, two lakes, and a visitor center. Lone Pine - Mississippi River State Park offers primitive lakeside sites in the St. Francis National Forest.
Things to do near Hughes
Memphis is the obvious day-trip anchor. From Tom Sawyer's RV Park, West Memphis AR, downtown Memphis, Beale Street, Graceland, and the Bass Pro Pyramid are all short drives across the river. The Big River Crossing pedestrian and bike bridge spans the Mississippi and offers open-air views of the river and skyline.
On the Arkansas side, Village Creek State Park offers hiking, mountain biking, and horse trails on Crowley's Ridge, plus an Andy Dye-designed 27-hole championship public golf course, MiniVerde Bermuda greens, and the most intact segment of the Trail of Tears.
At Mississippi River State Park visitors can camp, fish, paddle, hike, and view wildlife, with access to the St. Francis National Forest and the Saint Francis WMA. Bear Creek Lake anchors the Beech Point and Lone Pine campgrounds, and Storm Creek Lake anchors a third campground, giving anglers and paddlers two distinct waters to work.

Spring and fall are the most comfortable windows for RV travel in the Delta. Days are mild, humidity is manageable, and the Crowley's Ridge hardwoods put on a strong show in October and November. Spring brings thunderstorms and river flooding risk: Mississippi River bank sites can be affected when the river runs high, and Tom Sawyer's has taken flood damage in recent seasons.
Summer is hot, humid, and buggy. Bring plenty of bug spray, and expect afternoon storms. Swim beaches at Mississippi River State Park run seasonally: free swimming at beaches, with no lifeguard, runs Memorial Day weekend through Labor Day. Weekdays and the off-season are noticeably quieter.
Winter is the slow season. At Village Creek, the campground and picnic area stay open all year, but restrooms are open March through December. Equestrian trails close when wet because the Crowley's Ridge soil is very fragile, though this soil type drains quickly after moderate rains.
How to book campgrounds near Hughes
Village Creek State Park is reserved through the Arkansas State Parks system, either online at the state parks reservation site or by phone with the park office. Any unreserved site is available on arrival, and both camp areas fill quickly on peak-season weekends.
Mississippi River State Park is booked through the same Arkansas State Parks system. Beech Point, the hookup campground on Bear Creek Lake, requires advance reservations for its 14 full hookup RV sites and 3 tent-only sites through the Arkansas State Parks reservation system online or by phone. Lone Pine primitive sites operate on a first-come, first-served basis.
Tom Sawyer's RV Park, West Memphis AR accommodates RVs up to 130 feet with full hookups, accepts reservations year-round, and allows pets throughout the property. The Tunica-area casino RV parks, Sams Town Gambling Hall RV Park and Hollywood Casino Hotel and RV Park, are booked directly through each property; riverfront and premium sites go first on holiday weekends.
What to expect on the ground
Sites vary widely across these parks. Tom Sawyer's has 100 full hookup campsites that are big rig friendly, with many concrete pull-through pads. The approach runs through West Memphis industrial areas and down a gravel access road that campers describe as bumpy and winding, and cell coverage on the riverfront can be inconsistent.
At Village Creek, all campsites have water and electric hookups. Camp Area A has 41 campsites with water and electric hookups, five with 50-amp and 36 with 30-amp, and no sewer hookups, but bathhouses and dump stations are nearby. Camp Area B is closer to Lake Dunn and offers 24 campsites with full hookups and concrete pads. Loop A sites can be uneven, so bring leveling blocks.
Lone Pine has 14 primitive sites next to the lake with no hookups; each site has a table, lantern post, fire ring and grill, and water, vault toilets and trash collection are available. Firewood is best purchased locally to avoid moving pests.
