Campgrounds and RV parks near Kensett, AR

Fishing drives most trips in this area. The Little Red River below Greers Ferry Dam is a tailwater trout fishery stocked by the Greers Ferry National Fish Hatchery, which offers free tours and produces about one million rainbow trout a year for restocking the Little Red and other Arkansas streams. The lake itself is known for striped bass, walleye, and crappie. Greers Ferry Lake is an outdoor enthusiasts' dream, with boating, sailing, water skiing, swimming, scuba diving and fishing opportunities, and with over 30,000 acres of water surface, the lake serves as a playground for all kinds of water sports. Marinas around the lake rent boats. On land, families use the developed swim beaches at Corps parks, the William Carl Garner Visitor Center near the dam, and day hikes on Sugar Loaf Mountain, an island peak with panoramic lake views.

Central Arkansas has four distinct seasons. Summers are hot and humid, with July highs averaging around 32 degrees Celsius and frequent afternoon thunderstorms. Spring brings the wettest stretch of the year and the tornado risk that comes with it, so RV travelers should track weather radios closely from March through May. Most Corps of Engineers campgrounds around Greers Ferry Lake operate on a seasonal schedule. Old Highway 25 operates seasonally from May through September, with weekend reservations essential during peak periods. Other parks, including Heber Springs, stay open on a longer schedule. Winter camping options are limited across the USACE network at this lake. Fall is the most comfortable window for RV travel, with cool nights, thinning crowds, and heavy hardwoods turning color across the Ozark foothills. The dense mix of red cedar, black gum, red oak, elm, pecan and sweet gum trees provides shade in the summer months and beautiful fall colors during autumn. Private RV parks in and around Kensett generally stay open through all four seasons.

Private RV parks around Kensett and Searcy are typically level gravel or paved pads with 30- and 50-amp electric, water, and sewer at the site. Sites lean utilitarian rather than scenic, and many host a mix of overnight travelers and longer-term residents. Corps campgrounds at Greers Ferry Lake are the opposite: heavily wooded, with electric-only or basic hookups and shared dump stations at most parks. Roads and pads can be tight and older, and cell coverage varies by cove. Bring a surge protector, a long fresh-water hose, and leveling blocks. Wildlife is plentiful around Greers Ferry Lake, and visitors commonly see white-tailed deer, wild turkeys, rabbits, squirrels and a wide variety of birds. Summer visitors should plan for heat, humidity, and biting insects, especially at dawn and dusk near the shoreline.
