Campgrounds and RV parks near Oppelo, AR

The main draw is Petit Jean State Park itself. Trails lead to the 91-foot Cedar Falls, through the canyons of Seven Hollows, and past formations such as Bear Cave, Natural Bridge, and the Grotto. The park has more than 20 miles of hiking trails, plus a CCC-era hike and bike trail suited to families. Lake Bailey covers about 100 acres and is open to fishing, kayaking, and pedal boating, with a summertime boathouse that offers boat rentals, a snack bar, and supplies. Kids typically split time between the two park swimming pools, the playground, and easier walks around the lake. Off the mountain, the Museum of Automobiles on Petit Jean Mountain and the Arkansas River access points near Morrilton round out a long weekend.

Summer is peak season on Petit Jean Mountain. Days are hot and humid, with highs commonly in the low 90s and afternoon thunderstorms, but the lake and pools stay busy and the boathouse runs through the summer months. Holiday weekends fill first, so weekend RV sites often go months in advance. Spring brings wildflowers, waterfall flow at Cedar Falls, and the region's wettest stretch of the year. Storms can be severe in April and May, and travelers should watch for tornado watches when planning open-air activities. Fall cools quickly through October and November, with lower humidity and strong color on the hardwood ridges, making it a favorite window for hiking-focused trips. Winter is quieter. The state park campground stays open year-round, and cabins and yurts remain available, but water-based amenities close and occasional ice storms can affect mountain roads.

At Petit Jean State Park, check-in for campsites is in the afternoon, and each of the four camping areas has a modern bathhouse with hot showers and flush toilets. The 35 Class AAA sites include 30 and 50 amp electric, water, and sewer; the 90 Class B sites offer 30 amp electric and water. A central dump station serves the campground, and WiFi is generally limited to Mather Lodge and the visitor center. Lakeside Area A and Area B can handle larger rigs and towables, while Areas C and D sit in the woods with smaller, sometimes uneven sites better suited to truck campers and mid-size trailers. The mountain access road includes tight curves, so drivers of larger motorhomes should take the ascent slowly. Cell coverage is generally usable but patchy in canyon sections. Private campgrounds in the area tend to be smaller and more informal, with amenities ranging from basic hookups to resort-style features depending on the property.
