Perryville camping overview
Perryville sits in central Arkansas at the edge of the Ouachita National Forest, roughly forty miles west of Little Rock and within easy reach of the Arkansas River Valley. The town works well as a base for RV trips centered on Petit Jean Mountain, the Ouachitas, and the lakes and rivers scattered across Perry and Conway counties.
Campground options in the area range from full-hookup state park sites to small private mountain-top resorts. The terrain around Perryville is dominated by the lower Ouachita ridges rather than the Ozarks farther north, giving campgrounds a mix of shaded forest sites and open ridge-top views. Petit Jean State Park itself sits between the Ozark and Ouachita ranges on Petit Jean Mountain.
Named properties within a short drive include Petit Jean State Park, Sun Moon and CARs Campground on Petit Jean Mtn, The Wright Spot Mountain Top Resort, Forest Lake Estates Motorhome Complex, and Get Mooned: I-40 Tent Village near the interstate corridor. Together these cover public and private options for tents, travel trailers, and larger motorhomes.
Things to do near Perryville
Petit Jean State Park is the anchor attraction, with Cedar Falls, the Seven Hollows Trail, Bear Cave, and overlooks along the Petit Jean River valley. Day trips from Petit Jean State Park or Sun Moon and CARs Campground on Petit Jean Mtn can easily fill several days of hiking without repeating trails.
The surrounding Ouachita National Forest offers gravel forest roads, mountain biking, and access to Lake Winona and the Fourche La Fave River for paddling and fishing. Nearby Lake Maumelle and the Arkansas River add flat-water boating and bass fishing to the mix.
For rainy days, the Museum of Automobiles on Petit Jean Mountain and the historic Winrock grounds are within a few minutes of The Wright Spot Mountain Top Resort and Forest Lake Estates Motorhome Complex. Mather Lodge, built by the Civilian Conservation Corps in the 1930s, offers a restaurant overlooking Cedar Creek Canyon.

Central Arkansas has hot, humid summers and short, cool winters with periodic cold snaps and occasional ice. Spring and fall are the busiest RV seasons, with mild days, cool nights, and manageable humidity. Wildflowers and dogwoods peak in April, and hardwood color on Petit Jean Mountain typically runs from late October into early November.
Summer brings heat indices above one hundred and frequent afternoon thunderstorms. Shaded, forested sites and campgrounds with pool or lake access are the more comfortable picks. Biting insects are active from late spring through early fall, so screens and repellent matter.
Winter is the quietest stretch. Freezing nights are common, and occasional ice storms can close mountain roads for a day or two. Many private campgrounds run reduced services in January and February, though Petit Jean State Park stays open year-round with electric and water hookups available. Severe weather season peaks in spring, when tornadoes, hail, and damaging winds are all possible, so travelers should monitor NOAA Weather Radio.
How to book
Petit Jean State Park is reserved through the Arkansas State Parks system, either online at reserve.arkansasstateparks.com or by phone. Sites can be booked up to twelve months in advance, and weekends require a two-night stay while holidays require three nights. Holiday weekends from Memorial Day through Labor Day, plus peak fall foliage weekends in late October, fill earliest.
Private campgrounds such as Sun Moon and CARs Campground on Petit Jean Mtn, The Wright Spot Mountain Top Resort, Forest Lake Estates Motorhome Complex, and Get Mooned: I-40 Tent Village are booked directly with each operator. Availability, minimum-night rules, and rig-length limits vary, so travelers with larger motorhomes should confirm site dimensions and turning access before booking, especially for mountain-top properties reached by narrow roads.
What to expect
Terrain around Perryville is rolling to hilly, with some campgrounds sitting on Petit Jean Mountain at roughly a thousand feet of elevation. Approach roads include grades and switchbacks that can slow larger rigs and tow vehicles, and cell coverage is spotty once off the main highways and in the canyons around Petit Jean.
At Petit Jean State Park, Loop A along Lake Bailey offers full-hookup sites with fifty-amp service, while the remaining loops provide thirty-amp electric and water. A dump station and bathhouses are on site. Private parks in the area vary from basic tent villages to full-service motorhome complexes.
Black bears are uncommon but present in the Ouachitas, so food should be stored in the RV overnight. Ticks and chiggers are the more routine nuisance from spring through fall. Firewood should be bought locally to avoid moving invasive pests.
