Camping near Baker, California
Baker sits at the northern edge of the Mojave National Preserve along Interstate 15, roughly halfway between Barstow and Las Vegas. The town functions as a fuel-and-supply stop for RV travelers heading into the eastern Mojave, with Death Valley to the north and the preserve immediately south. Elevations across the surrounding camping areas range from valley floor near Baker to about 4,300 feet at Providence Mountains State Recreational Area, which shapes both temperatures and seasonal access.
Nearby options run from federal campgrounds inside the preserve to private hot-springs resorts in Tecopa. Cowhole Mountain and Kelso Dunes offer dispersed desert camping inside Mojave National Preserve, while Tecopa Hot Springs Resort and Delight's Hot Springs Resort provide hookups and mineral pools to the north. Providence Mountains State Recreational Area offers a small developed tent campground at higher elevation. Services in Baker itself are limited to gas, food, and basic supplies, so RV renters should arrive with full water and provisions before heading into the backcountry.
Things to do near Baker
The Kelso Dunes rise roughly 650 feet above the surrounding desert and can produce a low rumble when sand slides down the lee face, a short but steep hike from the parking area. Cinder cones, lava tubes, and Joshua tree forests lie within easy driving distance inside Mojave National Preserve. At Providence Mountains State Recreational Area, ranger-led tours of Mitchell Caverns explore limestone passages with stalactites, stalagmites, and a constant cool interior temperature. Tecopa Hot Springs Resort and Delight's Hot Springs Resort give travelers access to natural mineral soaking pools after a day in the desert. Death Valley National Park is a reasonable day trip north, with stargazing under some of the darkest skies in the contiguous United States possible from almost any site in the area.

Summer is the hardest season for desert camping near Baker. July and August highs average near 100°F, with overnight lows often above 74°F. Pavement, sand, and vehicle interiors heat well past safe levels for kids and pets, and afternoon thunderstorms in July and August can trigger flash floods in washes and unpaved preserve roads.
Fall and spring are the practical windows for most RV trips. October through November and March through April are the most popular months for Mitchell Caverns tours and for camping inside the preserve, with daytime highs in the 60s to 80s and cool nights. Wildflowers can appear in the eastern Mojave from mid-February into April after wet winters.
Winter is mild by day but can drop below freezing at higher elevations such as Providence Mountains and Mid Hills. Snow is rare on the valley floor near Baker but possible in the mountains. Wind is a year-round factor; spring frontal systems can produce sustained gusts that damage awnings and tents.
How to book campgrounds near Baker
Reservation systems vary by landowner. The developed campgrounds inside Mojave National Preserve, Hole-in-the-Wall and Mid Hills, moved to Recreation.gov in 2025 and are reservable up to six months in advance on a rolling basis, with same-day reservations also permitted. Black Canyon group and equestrian campground is reserved through the National Park Service. Dispersed camping near Cowhole Mountain and Kelso Dunes is free but restricted to previously used roadside sites away from paved roads, day-use areas, and sensitive habitat.
Providence Mountains State Recreational Area uses ReserveCalifornia for its five developed campsites, available Friday and Saturday nights, and for Mitchell Caverns tour tickets, which sell out weeks ahead in spring and fall. Tecopa Hot Springs Resort and Delight's Hot Springs Resort take direct bookings through their own websites or by phone and offer RV sites with hookups.
What to expect camping near Baker
Expect remote, low-service conditions. Cell coverage is unreliable across most of Mojave National Preserve and absent at Providence Mountains State Recreational Area. There are no gas stations or stores inside the preserve, and potable water is limited to a few developed sites. RV renters should top off fuel and fresh water in Baker and carry extra drinking water for every passenger.
Most preserve campgrounds have pit toilets, fire rings, and picnic tables but no hookups or showers. A dump station is available at Hole-in-the-Wall. The access road to Mid Hills includes about nine miles of unpaved road and is not recommended for motorhomes or trailers. Leashed pets are allowed in campgrounds but not on most trails. Skies are exceptionally dark, and wildlife sightings can include desert tortoise, coyote, and bighorn sheep.

nps.gov/moja/planyourvisit/campgrounds.htmWhen is the best time to visit Baker, California in an RV?
The sweet spot for an RV trip to Baker is October through April, when daytime highs sit between 60 and 85 degrees Fahrenheit and nights cool into the 40s and 50s, ideal for desert exploring and stargazing. November and March are particularly magical, with wildflowers possible in spring and crystal-clear winter skies. Summer in Baker is famously brutal: temperatures regularly exceed 110 degrees from June through August, and the World's Tallest Thermometer in town has clocked 134 degrees historically. If you do come in summer, drive in the early morning, run AC on shore power when possible, and plan stops every 90 minutes. Pro tip: late February to mid-April is peak Mojave wildflower season.
weather.gov/lox/I've never driven an RV before. Is Baker a good place to start?
Baker is actually a great spot for first time renting an RV, because once you're on I-15 or Kelbaker Road, you've got wide-open desert highway with light traffic and excellent visibility. Every RVezy host provides a full orientation walkthrough at pickup, covering generator, slide-outs, hookups, tanks, and driving tips, so you're never left guessing. You can also message your host any time during the trip with questions. For nervous first-timers, choose a Class C motorhome or campervan rental Baker hosts offer, which drive much more like a large truck than a bus. Pro tip: spend your first night at Baker RV in town to practice hookups before heading into Mojave National Preserve.
dmv.ca.gov/portal/handbook/california-driver-handbook/What happens if my RV breaks down near Baker?
You are covered. Every RVezy booking includes 24/7 roadside assistance as part of the renter protection plan, so help is one phone call away whether you are at the Zzyzx Road exit or deep on Kelbaker Road. Service providers can dispatch for flat tires, battery issues, lockouts, and mechanical breakdowns. Baker itself has gas stations open 24/7, and Barstow, about 60 miles west on I-15, has full RV repair facilities. Your host is also a quick message away through the RVezy app for questions about the rig's quirks. Pro tip: download offline Google Maps for Mojave National Preserve, cell service drops in canyons but rebounds near I-15 and Highway 127.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/34008759079835-RVezy-renter-protection-plans-in-detailCan I take my Baker RV rental across state lines or into Mexico?
Yes, crossing into Nevada or Arizona from Baker is welcomed by most hosts, since Las Vegas (about 90 miles) and the Grand Canyon are classic routes from here. Just confirm cross-border travel with your host through the RVezy message thread before booking. Travel into Mexico is not permitted because RVezy's protection coverage is valid only within the United States and Canada. Popular interstate runs from Baker include I-15 north to Utah's Zion National Park (about 220 miles), I-15 to Las Vegas, and Highway 95 through Nevada. Pro tip: if you are chasing a multi-state national parks loop, mention it to your host upfront, they often have favorite routes and overnight tips to share.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360039340074-Insurance-coverage-validityWhat's a realistic fuel budget for an RV trip from Baker?
Plan smart and fuel is manageable. Most Class C motorhomes get 8 to 12 miles per gallon, campervans average 14 to 20 MPG, and large Class A rigs run 6 to 10 MPG. California gas in Baker tends to run higher than the state average since it's a remote stop, often $1 to $1.50 more per gallon than Barstow or Las Vegas. For a 400-mile loop through Death Valley and back, budget roughly $200 to $350 in fuel for a Class C. Pro tip: fill up in Barstow heading east or Primm, Nevada heading north, two of the cheapest fuel stops on the I-15 corridor. The famous Baker gas stations are convenient but pricey.
energy.ca.gov/data-reports/energy-almanac/transportation-energy/california-retail-fuel-outlet-annual-reportingHow far in advance should I book a campground near Baker?
Book early and you'll have your pick. Developed campgrounds in Mojave National Preserve (Hole-in-the-Wall and Mid Hills) require reservations through Recreation.gov, and sites for spring weekends often fill 3 to 6 months ahead. Death Valley campgrounds like Furnace Creek book similarly far out. Private parks like Tecopa Hot Springs Resort and Baker RV are more flexible, often available 1 to 2 weeks out except during major holidays. Dispersed BLM camping around Silurian Dry Lake Bed and Rasor OHV Area requires no reservation and is free. Pro tip: if developed sites are full, book your RVezy rental with a generator and full freshwater tank, then enjoy free dispersed camping with zero crowds.
recreation.gov/camping/gateways/2725What are driving conditions like around Baker?
Driving around Baker is mostly easy desert highway, but a few things are worth knowing. I-15 between Barstow and Las Vegas is straight, well-maintained, and busy on weekends, expect heavy Friday/Sunday traffic both directions. Kelbaker Road into Mojave National Preserve is paved and scenic but narrow with no shoulders, so take it slow. Crosswinds near Afton Canyon and Soda Dry Lake can be strong, especially in spring. Watch for steep grades on the Baker Grade climbing toward Mountain Pass. Summer asphalt temps can stress tires, so check pressure before driving. Pro tip: avoid driving I-15 between 3 and 7 PM Sunday on holiday weekends, when LA-bound traffic from Vegas backs up for miles.
quickmap.dot.ca.gov/What amenities will I find at campgrounds near Baker?
You'll find a wide range. Baker RV and Tecopa Hot Springs Resort offer full hookups (electric, water, sewer), dump stations, and laundry. Hole-in-the-Wall Campground in Mojave has potable water, vault toilets, picnic tables, and fire rings, but no hookups, with a dump station available seasonally. Mid Hills Campground has vault toilets and tables but no water, so fill up beforehand. Afton Canyon offers pit toilets only. There's no dump station inside Mojave National Preserve year-round, so plan to use the one at Baker RV or in Barstow. Pro tip: top off freshwater in Baker before heading into the preserve, the Mad Greek Cafe area has potable water access and is the last reliable fill point.
nps.gov/moja/planyourvisit/campgrounds.htmWhat equipment comes with an RV rental in Baker?
RVezy rentals come well-stocked for desert life. Expect a full kitchen with fridge, stove, microwave, and basic cookware; a bathroom with toilet and shower; multiple beds with bedding (check the listing); air conditioning and furnace; freshwater, gray, and black tanks; and seatbelts for travel. Most Class C and Class A motorhome rental Baker options include a generator, essential for boondocking in Mojave where there are no hookups. Many hosts also throw in camp chairs, outdoor mats, and starter supplies. WiFi is rare in the rig itself, but cell hotspots work along I-15. Pro tip: confirm the generator hours allowed and AC capacity before summer trips, you'll want both running hard when temps climb.
nps.gov/moja/planyourvisit/things2know.htmWhat add-ons and options should I consider for my Baker RV rental?
To make your Baker trip easier, look for these popular add-ons on RVezy listings: delivery and setup (often $2 to $4 per mile from the host's location), generator use (sometimes included, sometimes $5 to $15 per hour), camping gear bundles ($25 to $75 flat), bike racks, and pet fees ($25 to $100 per stay). Mileage policies vary, some hosts offer unlimited mileage, while others include 100 to 150 free miles per day with extra miles at $0.25 to $0.50. For a long Death Valley or Vegas loop, an RV rental with unlimited mileage saves real money. Pro tip: ask about a propane top-off add-on, you'll burn through it fast running heat on cold desert nights.
nps.gov/moja/planyourvisit/fees.htmHow does payment and the security deposit work on RVezy?
Payment is simple and secure through the RVezy platform, with no cash exchanged with hosts. You pay your booking total (rental plus fees plus your chosen protection plan) at the time of booking by credit card. The security deposit is separate from your booking payment and is held on your card before pickup, then released after the trip if the RV is returned in good condition. Deposit amounts vary by listing and are shown before you book. Choosing a higher protection plan tier can reduce your out-of-pocket exposure for any damage. Pro tip: do a quick walkthrough video with your host at pickup and dropoff, it protects everyone and makes deposit returns smooth.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360038106214-How-the-security-deposit-worksHow do I prepare an RV for Baker's extreme desert heat?
Smart prep makes summer in Baker totally doable. Choose an RVezy rig with strong AC (15,000 BTU or higher), a working generator for off-grid AC use, and reflective window covers if possible. Park in shade whenever you can, dump black/gray tanks frequently to prevent odor buildup in heat, and carry at least 5 gallons of drinking water per person per day. Avoid driving between 11 AM and 4 PM when tire blowouts spike, check tire pressure cold every morning. Mojave National Preserve has no fuel stations inside, so top off in Baker. Pro tip: the shoulder seasons (March-April and October-November) are honestly a smarter play than summer, you'll save on fuel for AC and actually enjoy hiking Kelso Dunes.
