Camping near Desert View Highlands, California
Desert View Highlands sits in the Antelope Valley on the western edge of the Mojave Desert, just north of Palmdale and a short drive from Lancaster. The location puts RV travellers within easy reach of high-desert state parks, the San Gabriel Mountains, and the Highway 14 corridor that links the valley to greater Los Angeles. Most nearby campgrounds cluster along Highway 14 between Acton and Lancaster, ranging from full-hookup commercial RV resorts to a basic state park campground at the foot of a Joshua tree butte.
The Californian RV Resort and Soledad Canyon RV and Camping Resort sit south in Acton near the San Gabriel foothills. Antelope Valley Fair RV Park is in Lancaster on the fairgrounds, while Saddleback Butte State Park lies east of Lancaster in open desert. Los Angeles RV Resort is the closest option toward the metro area. Together, these give travellers a mix of resort amenities, fairgrounds parking, and primitive desert sites within roughly an hour's drive.
Things to do near Desert View Highlands
Hiking is the headline activity in spring, when the Antelope Valley California Poppy Reserve north of Lancaster fills with wildflowers. Saddleback Butte State Park offers a summit trail through Joshua tree woodland, with wide views across the Mojave from the top of the butte. Soledad Canyon and the surrounding Angeles National Forest provide canyon hiking, mountain biking, and creekside picnicking closer to the San Gabriels.
Families can break up desert days at the resort pools at Soledad Canyon RV and Camping Resort, which include a large family pool, mini-golf, a country store, and a hot tub. Lancaster adds the MOAH art museum, the BLVD shopping district, and the Antelope Valley Fairgrounds event calendar. Day trips run easily to Vasquez Rocks, Six Flags Magic Mountain, and Edwards Air Force Base aviation sites.

The Antelope Valley has a high-desert climate with hot, dry summers and cool winters. Spring, from roughly February through May, is the most popular window: daytime highs are comfortable, wildflowers bloom across the valley floor, and Saddleback Butte's Joshua tree stands are at their best. Poppy bloom peaks vary widely and depend heavily on winter rainfall, so it is worth checking the state reserve's bloom updates before locking in dates.
Summer brings strong heat. July and August routinely push past 90 F, with low overnight humidity and cool, star-filled nights. Shade is limited at desert sites, so air-conditioned RV hookups become essential. Fall returns mild temperatures and is a strong shoulder season with fewer crowds. Winter is cool, occasionally cold at night, and brings most of the region's modest annual rainfall. Wind is a year-round factor in the open valley, and Saddleback Butte campsites include wind breaks for this reason. Snow is rare on the valley floor but possible on nearby San Gabriel passes.

How to book campgrounds near Desert View Highlands
Reservation systems vary by campground. Saddleback Butte State Park operates its 50 standard family sites on a first-come, first-served basis, with no advance booking accepted for individual sites; only the Joshua Group Camp takes reservations through ReserveCalifornia. Plan to arrive early on spring weekends when wildflower traffic peaks.
Soledad Canyon RV and Camping Resort is a Thousand Trails property and accepts reservations directly through the Thousand Trails or RV on the Go websites; membership rates differ from public guest rates. The Californian RV Resort and Los Angeles RV Resort take direct bookings through their websites or by phone, and both accommodate longer rigs with full hookups. Antelope Valley Fair RV Park is first-come, first-served with self-registration on arrival, and the park is closed during April and September for large fairgrounds events, so check dates before relying on it as a stopover.
What to expect on the ground
Expect open high-desert terrain, wide skies, and minimal natural shade away from the canyon parks. Saddleback Butte State Park has 50 standard sites with picnic tables, fire rings, shade ramadas, and modern flush-toilet restrooms, but no hookups and no showers; a dump station is on site, and most slots fit rigs up to about 30 feet. Bring water, sun protection, and warm layers for cool nights.
Commercial parks in Acton and Lancaster offer full hookups with 30 and 50 amp service, level pads, laundry, and Wi-Fi of varying quality. Soledad Canyon accommodates large rigs and has resort amenities including pools, a hot tub, mini-golf, and a family lodge. Antelope Valley Fair RV Park is a paved fairgrounds lot with 62 full-hookup sites and pull-throughs, well-suited to overnight stops along Highway 14. Cell coverage is reliable near the freeway and patchier in canyon and desert sites.

Great news: for almost every RV rental in Desert View Highlands, your regular Class C driver's license is all you need. The California DMV allows any motorhome 40 feet or less to be driven on a standard Class C license, which covers Class B campervans, Class C motorhomes, and most travel trailers and fifth wheels under 10,000 pounds GVWR. You'll need to be 25 or older to book on RVezy, and your ID is verified securely through the platform during checkout. Visiting from abroad? Bring your home country's license plus an International Driving Permit. Most renters in the Antelope Valley pick a Class C motorhome or campervan that drives much like a large van, so first-timers feel comfortable quickly.

Booking is low risk: RVezy sets the cancellation policy (not individual hosts), and there is a grace period after booking during which you can cancel for a full refund. After that, the refund amount depends on how far out from your trip you cancel. You will see the exact terms at checkout, so there are no surprises. If a host ever needs to cancel on you, RVezy refunds you or helps rebook so your trip still happens. Pro tip: if your plans are still firming up, message the host before booking to ask about flexibility, then lock in your Desert View Highlands RV trip with confidence.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360037736674-Understanding-the-cancellation-policy-for-guestsCan I bring my dog on an RV rental in Desert View Highlands?
Absolutely, a pet-friendly RV rental in Desert View Highlands is easy to find. Just toggle the Pet-Friendly filter on RVezy and you'll see every host in the Palmdale and Antelope Valley area who welcomes furry travelers. Some charge a small pet fee or cleaning add-on, which will be shown right on the listing. Dogs love this corner of California: the Prime Desert Woodland Preserve in Lancaster has leashed-dog-friendly trails through Joshua trees, and Devil's Punchbowl Natural Area near Pearblossom is open to leashed pets on certain trails. Pro tip: pack a collapsible water bowl. Antelope Valley summers regularly hit 96 degrees Fahrenheit, and dogs dehydrate fast on the high desert hardpan.
nps.gov/subjects/camping/pet-friendly-camping.htmCan the RV be delivered to my campsite or driveway in Desert View Highlands?
Yes, RV delivery in Desert View Highlands is one of the most popular options on the platform, especially for first-time renters. Many Palmdale-area hosts will tow or drive the RV to your campground, vacation rental, or driveway, level it, hook up water and power, and walk you through every system before they leave. This is a game changer if you want to camp at Saddleback Butte State Park, Soledad Canyon, or a nearby RV park without driving a rig yourself. Filter by Delivery on the search page to see hosts who offer it, and check each listing for the per-mile delivery fee. Pro tip: ask the host to deliver the day before your reservation starts so you can settle in unhurried.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360039340234-RV-delivery-optionsHow far can I drive on a Desert View Highlands RV trip and what about mileage limits?
You have a huge playground within easy reach. Each RVezy host sets their own mileage policy, and many offer an RV rental with unlimited mileage, perfect for an RV road trip from Desert View Highlands. Listings show your included miles and any per-mile overage rate up front. Pro tip: if you're plotting a big loop, message the host before booking and ask about a custom mileage package.
nps.gov/jotr/planyourvisit/directions.htmWhere are the best campgrounds near Desert View Highlands for RV camping?
You have several great choices for RV camping in Desert View Highlands without driving far. Saddleback Butte State Park (about 25 miles northeast) offers desert sites with Joshua trees and dark skies, open year-round. Antelope Valley Fair RV Park in Lancaster (about 15 miles north) has full hookups and budget-friendly nightly rates. Thousand Trails Soledad Canyon (about 30 miles southwest near Acton) sits along the Santa Clara River and is family favorite. Acton/Los Angeles North KOA is loaded with amenities and just 25 minutes away. For more rustic vibes, Monte Cristo Campground in Angeles National Forest accepts trailers up to 26 feet. Pro tip: book Saddleback Butte for spring wildflower season; that's when the surrounding desert puts on a quiet show.
parks.ca.gov/?page_id=618When is the best time of year to rent an RV in Desert View Highlands?
Spring (March to May) and fall (October to early November) are the sweet spots for an RV rental Desert View Highlands trip. Daytime temperatures sit comfortably in the upper 60s to mid-80s Fahrenheit, nights cool down to the 40s and 50s, and rainfall is minimal across the high desert. Spring also brings the world-famous bloom at the Antelope Valley California Poppy Reserve (peak usually late March through mid-April). Summers can hit 96 to 100 degrees, so if you go June through August, focus on early-morning driving and look for RVs with strong air conditioning. Winters are mild by day (mid-50s) but can drop below freezing at night, occasionally with snow. Pro tip: October sunsets here are unreal, the desert turns gold around 5 p.m.
weather.gov/lox/I've never rented an RV before. How do I know what I'm doing?
You'll be in great hands. Every RVezy host gives you a hands-on orientation at pickup, walking through how to drive, level the RV, connect water and power, use the propane and generator, dump tanks, and troubleshoot anything that comes up. Most first-time renters in Palmdale pick a Class C motorhome or a campervan because they drive much like a large van, no special license needed. You can message the host with questions before you book, and RVezy support is available 24/7 throughout your trip. Pro tip: for your first-time renting an RV adventure, plan an easy out-and-back to Saddleback Butte or Soledad Canyon before tackling longer hauls to Death Valley or Sequoia.
nps.gov/subjects/camping/rv-camping.htmWhat happens if the RV breaks down during my trip?
You are covered. Every RVezy booking includes 24/7 roadside assistance, so if you get a flat on Highway 138, a dead battery at Vasquez Rocks, or a mechanical issue heading up to Mount Pinos, one phone call gets help dispatched to you. The roadside team handles tows, jump starts, lockouts, tire changes, and fuel delivery. Your host is also reachable as a first call for quick fixes (like which switch turns on the water pump), and RVezy customer support backs you up for anything bigger. Pro tip: save the RVezy support number and your host phone number to your contacts before you leave Desert View Highlands. Cell service can drop in the canyons of Angeles National Forest.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360039008894-Roadside-assistance-coverageCan I take my Desert View Highlands RV rental to other states or across the border?
Yes, interstate travel is generally welcome on a motorhome rental Desert View Highlands trip. Popular runs include Nevada (Las Vegas is about 3.5 hours, Valley of Fire roughly 4), Arizona for Grand Canyon adventures (around 7 hours to the South Rim), and Utah's national parks like Zion (6 hours). Travel into Canada may be allowed with advance host approval and proper insurance documentation, so message the host before booking if that's your plan. Travel into Mexico is not permitted on any RVezy rental because insurance coverage doesn't extend across the border. Pro tip: from Desert View Highlands, the I-15 corridor through Barstow and Baker is the classic gateway to the Southwest, with plenty of fuel stops and overnight options along the way.
cbp.gov/travel/us-citizens/know-before-you-goHow much fuel will I burn on a Desert View Highlands RV trip?
Budgeting fuel is straightforward once you know your rig. Class B campervans average 18 to 22 miles per gallon, Class C motorhomes typically get 8 to 12 mpg, Class A motorhomes around 6 to 10 mpg, and a truck towing a travel trailer usually pulls 10 to 14 mpg. Gas prices in Palmdale tend to run a few cents below central LA, so it's smart to fuel up locally before heading out on Highway 14. For a typical 300-mile weekend loop in a Class C, plan on about $130 to $170 in fuel. Pro tip: Costco on 10th Street West in Palmdale and the truck-friendly stations near Avenue S are the local go-to spots for cheaper diesel and gasoline before a big rent an RV in Desert View Highlands road trip.
eia.gov/petroleum/gasdiesel/How far in advance should I book a campground near Desert View Highlands?
For California State Parks like Saddleback Butte, reservations open six months in advance on ReserveCalifornia, and spring weekends (especially during poppy bloom in late March and April) fill within hours. For Angeles National Forest campgrounds like Buckhorn or Chilao, book through Recreation.gov ideally 4 to 8 weeks ahead. Private parks like Thousand Trails Soledad Canyon and the Acton KOA usually have more availability but still sell out on holiday weekends. Antelope Valley Fair RV Park is your best last-minute option. Pro tip: if everywhere looks booked, ask your host about RV delivery to a Hipcamp private-land site near Lake Hughes or Acton, you'll often score something quiet and beautiful with only a few days' notice.
reservecalifornia.com/What are driving conditions like around Desert View Highlands?
Highway 14 (the Antelope Valley Freeway) is the main artery in and out of Desert View Highlands, and it's a straightforward four-lane drive. Heading south toward LA, expect heavy commuter traffic weekday mornings 5 to 9 a.m. and afternoons 3 to 7 p.m., so leave outside those windows if you can. The high desert (around 2,600 feet elevation) can get strong westerly winds, especially spring afternoons, which buffet tall RVs, so grip the wheel firmly and reduce speed. If you head into Angeles National Forest on the Angeles Crest Highway (SR-2), expect steep grades, tight switchbacks, and occasional winter closures. Pro tip: check Caltrans QuickMap before you leave; the I-5 Grapevine and SR-2 close fast in storms or snow.
quickmap.dot.ca.gov/What amenities will I find at campgrounds near Desert View Highlands?
Most RV parks within an hour of Desert View Highlands offer full hookups, meaning 30 or 50 amp electric, fresh water, and sewer at your site, plus dump stations, potable water fills, restrooms, and hot showers. Antelope Valley Fair RV Park and Acton KOA have laundry, Wi-Fi, and pools. State park campgrounds like Saddleback Butte are more rustic with vault toilets, drinking water, and no hookups, so plan to dry camp. Public dump stations are available at the Antelope Valley Fairgrounds in Lancaster for a small fee. Pro tip: if you're boondocking out toward El Mirage Dry Lake or BLM land east of Palmdale, top off fresh water and dump tanks before you leave town. The next reliable fill is back in Lancaster.
blm.gov/visit/search-details/250906/2What's included inside a typical RV rental in Desert View Highlands?
Most Desert View Highlands rentals come fully equipped and ready for camping. Expect a queen or king bed plus convertible dinette or bunk options (rigs commonly sleep 4 to 8), a kitchen with fridge, microwave, propane stove, sink, and basic cookware, a bathroom with shower and toilet, air conditioning and furnace, and seatbelts for everyone riding. Many include a TV, awning, outdoor chairs, and a generator or solar setup for off-grid camping. Wi-Fi is hit or miss in the high desert, so plan to use your phone hotspot. Each listing has a full amenities list and photo gallery, so you'll know exactly what's onboard. Pro tip: filter by Sleeps count and confirm the AC is rooftop ducted, since Palmdale summers regularly push past 95 degrees Fahrenheit.
energy.gov/energysaver/staying-coolWhat popular add-ons and pickup options should I know about?
Hosts in the Palmdale and Desert View Highlands area offer a great mix of add-ons that make trip planning easy. Common options include linens and towel packages, kitchen kits, generator hours, bike or kayak racks, portable BBQs, outdoor patio mats, and propane refills, all priced and listed right on the RV listing. Pickup is typically at the host's home in Palmdale, Lancaster, or Acton, with a walkthrough that takes 30 to 60 minutes. Many hosts offer RV delivery in Desert View Highlands or to nearby campgrounds (mileage fees apply). Mileage policies vary, with many offering 100 to 150 included miles per day and unlimited-mileage upgrades. Pro tip: book the linen package on your first trip. It's worth it to skip schlepping pillows and sheets up Highway 14.
fmcsa.dot.gov/safety/recreational-vehiclesHow do payments and security deposits work for an RV rental in Desert View Highlands?
Payment is simple and secure: you pay through the RVezy platform with a credit or debit card when you book, never directly to the host, which keeps everything traceable and protected. A separate security deposit hold is placed on your card before pickup (the listing shows the exact amount, typically a few hundred to a couple thousand dollars depending on the rig). It is a hold, not a charge, and it is released after drop-off once the host confirms the RV came back in the same condition. Pro tip: do a thorough walkaround at pickup and drop-off with the host, taking time-stamped photos of the interior, exterior, tires, and any existing dings. That is the easiest way to ensure your security deposit on your RV camping Desert View Highlands trip is released quickly.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360038106214-How-the-security-deposit-worksWhere can I park an RV in Desert View Highlands overnight if I'm not at a campground?
For overnight stays, your best bet is a campground or RV park because California Vehicle Code Section 22651(k) limits any vehicle to 72 hours in one spot on a public street, and the City of Palmdale enforces local oversized-vehicle parking rules. Many hosts let you stage the RV in their driveway the night before departure, and some private homes around Desert View Highlands have room for a guest rig (always confirm with the homeowner). For a quick layover, Antelope Valley Fair RV Park in Lancaster takes walk-ins, and the Acton/Los Angeles North KOA is just 25 minutes south. Pro tip: skip Walmart overnight parking in this area; most Antelope Valley locations no longer allow it. Plan ahead and you'll always have a great spot.
