Campgrounds near Dunsmuir, California
Dunsmuir sits in the upper Sacramento River canyon in Siskiyou County, surrounded by the Shasta-Trinity National Forest and within easy reach of Castle Crags State Park and Mount Shasta. The area mixes state-park campgrounds, private RV resorts, and lakefront sites, giving RV renters a range of options within roughly 20 miles of town.
Castle Crags State Park, about six miles south of Dunsmuir off Interstate 5, runs two campgrounds: the Main Campground on the north side of the highway and the smaller Riverside Campground on the south side near the Sacramento River. Sites are forested, with picnic tables, fire rings, and bear-proof food lockers. Railroad Park Resort And Dining Car Restaurant adds train-themed lodging alongside RV and tent sites near Little Castle Creek. North of town, Lake Siskiyou Camp Resort offers full-hookup sites on a lake at the base of Mount Shasta, and Mount Shasta City KOA Holiday provides a full-service RV base just off I-5. The cluster works well for one-night travelers on the I-5 corridor and for longer multi-park trips.
Things to do near Dunsmuir
Hiking is the headline activity. Castle Crags State Park has about 28 miles of trails, including the strenuous Crags Trail that climbs to the base of Castle Dome with views of Mount Shasta, plus a short accessible path from the Vista Point parking area. The Pacific Crest Trail passes through the park a short distance north of the main campground.
The Sacramento River through Dunsmuir is a well-known wild trout fishery, with fly fishing along the river and at the Castle Crags picnic area. Mossbrae Falls near town is a popular photo stop. Lake Siskiyou Camp Resort offers swimming, boat rentals, and fishing on the lake, plus a floating water park area during summer. Families based at Railroad Park Resort can wade in Little Castle Creek and explore the on-site vintage railcars.

The prime RV season runs late spring through early fall. May and June bring snowmelt, full rivers, and milder temperatures; July and August are dry and warm, with cool nights at the canyon's elevation of roughly 2,300 feet. Castle Crags fills quickly during this window, and reservations are recommended May through October. Forest Service first-come, first-served sites in the surrounding Shasta-Trinity National Forest can be full by mid-morning on summer weekends.
September and October bring lower crowds, cool nights, and fall color along the river. Winter is wet and cold, with most precipitation falling November through March and occasional snow at the elevations around town. Some private resorts operate seasonally: Lake Siskiyou Camp Resort runs from early April through early November, while Mount Shasta City KOA Holiday and Railroad Park Resort generally stay open year-round, though winter access can be limited during heavy snow.
How to book a campsite near Dunsmuir
Castle Crags State Park is on the ReserveCalifornia system. The Main Campground accepts reservations up to six months in advance on a rolling daily window, with a portion of sites held for first-come, first-served use. Riverside Campground has 12 sites and operates as first-come, first-served only. Self-registration is required when the entrance station is unstaffed.
Private parks book directly. Railroad Park Resort And Dining Car Restaurant, Lake Siskiyou Camp Resort, and Mount Shasta City KOA Holiday all take reservations through their own websites or by phone, and the KOA also books through the KOA national system. For summer weekends and holidays, book private resorts and Castle Crags reservable sites several weeks to several months ahead. RV renters should confirm site length, hookup type, and any big-rig restrictions before booking, since site sizes vary across these properties.
What to expect when camping near Dunsmuir
Expect a forested, mountain setting at elevations between roughly 2,000 and 3,500 feet. Sites at Castle Crags are wooded, with picnic tables, fire rings, food lockers, flush toilets, and hot showers; there are no RV hookups, and the campground accommodates RVs up to about 27 feet. Highway and train noise is audible at both Castle Crags loops due to proximity to Interstate 5 and the rail line.
Full hookups and longer-rig access are available at Railroad Park Resort, Lake Siskiyou Camp Resort, and Mount Shasta City KOA Holiday, with pull-throughs that fit bigger rigs. Bears are active in the area, so food must be stored in lockers or hard-sided vehicles. Cell coverage is spotty inside the canyon and improves near I-5. Bring layers: summer days can climb into the 80s while nights often drop into the 40s and 50s.

visitcalifornia.com/places-to-visit/dunsmuir/Do I need a special license to rent an RV in Dunsmuir, California?
Good news: your regular Class C driver's license is all you need to rent and drive almost every RV in Dunsmuir. California only requires a noncommercial Class B license for motorhomes over 40 feet long or over 26,000 pounds, and a noncommercial Class A for trailers above 10,000 pounds, which is well beyond the typical Class C motorhome, campervan, or travel trailer you'll book on RVezy. You must be 25 or older with a valid license, and RVezy verifies your ID right inside the platform. Visiting from abroad? Bring an International Driving Permit alongside your home license and you're set to rent an RV in Dunsmuir.

Every RV rental in Dunsmuir booked through RVezy comes with a protection plan and 24/7 roadside assistance built right in, so you can focus on Mount Shasta views instead of paperwork. The protection plan covers eligible damage to the RV during your trip, giving you real peace of mind. During checkout you choose your preferred coverage level from RVezy's renter protection tiers, so you can match coverage to how adventurous your Dunsmuir RV trip will be. RVezy sets these plans, not the host, which keeps things consistent across every booking. Pro tip: take a quick walkthrough photo set at pickup so any post-trip review is smooth and stress-free.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/34008759079835-RVezy-renter-protection-plans-in-detailWhat if my plans change? Can I cancel my Dunsmuir RV rental?
Yes, every RVezy booking includes a built-in cancellation policy, so renting an RV in Dunsmuir is a low-risk way to lock in your Mount Shasta trip. RVezy, not the host, sets the cancellation framework, and there is a money-back grace period right after booking plus additional flexibility based on how far out your trip is. Because the policy is platform-wide, you won't see it attached to a specific listing. If a host cancels, RVezy refunds you or provides travel credit. If anything changes on your end, message RVezy support and they will walk you through your options before your Dunsmuir RV trip begins.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360037736674-Understanding-the-cancellation-policy-for-guestsCan I bring my dog on a Dunsmuir RV trip?
Absolutely, Dunsmuir is one of the most dog-friendly RV basecamps in Northern California. To find a pet-friendly RV rental Dunsmuir hosts list, just toggle the Pet-Friendly filter on RVezy and you'll see rigs that welcome four-legged travelers. Once you're here, leashed dogs are welcome at Castle Crags State Park campgrounds, parking areas, and paved roads, and Tauhindauli Park and Trail right in town is fully dog-friendly along the Sacramento River. Dogs aren't allowed on Castle Crags hiking trails, but the nearby Shasta-Trinity National Forest has miles of leashed-dog trails. Pro tip: message hosts ahead about any pet fee so check-in is smooth and your pup is officially part of the adventure.
parks.ca.gov/?page_id=454Can the RV be delivered to a campground near Dunsmuir?
Yes, RV delivery Dunsmuir hosts is a fantastic option, especially if it's your first time renting an RV. Many local hosts will drive the rig to Castle Crags State Park, Railroad Park Resort, Lake Siskiyou Camp Resort, or even a private driveway, level it, hook up power and water, and walk you through every system before they leave. Use the Delivery filter on RVezy and enter your destination to see exactly which hosts deliver and what they charge per mile. This is the easiest way to start a Dunsmuir RV trip with zero towing or backing-up stress. Pro tip: book delivery for both arrival and pickup so you can simply drive home in your own car.
parks.ca.gov/?page_id=454How far can I drive on a Dunsmuir RV trip?
Dunsmuir sits right on Interstate 5, which makes it an unbeatable launchpad for road trips in every direction. From here you're about 60 miles north to Ashland, Oregon, 80 miles south to Redding, 70 miles east to Lassen Volcanic National Park, and roughly 220 miles to Crater Lake National Park. Each RVezy host sets their own daily mileage allowance, and some even offer RV rental with unlimited mileage, which is ideal for a long RV road trip from Dunsmuir up to Crater Lake or down through the Trinity Alps. Check the listing's mileage policy before booking, and message the host if you have a big loop in mind so they can quote any extra-mile add-ons in advance.
nps.gov/crla/index.htmWhere should I stay with my RV near Dunsmuir?

Lake Siskiyou Camp Resort, 15 minutes north near Mount Shasta, has full-hookup pull-through sites with epic mountain views. McCloud RV Resort and Friendly RV Park round out top picks. For RV camping Dunsmuir, book Castle Crags through ReserveCalifornia up to six months out, especially May through October.
parks.ca.gov/?page_id=454When is the best time to rent an RV in Dunsmuir?
Dunsmuir shines from late May through early October, when daytime highs sit between 75 and 90 degrees Fahrenheit and the Upper Sacramento River, Lake Siskiyou, and Castle Crags trails are at their best. July is the warmest month with highs around 86 degrees, and August stays nearly identical, while September and early October bring cooler nights, fewer crowds, and gorgeous fall color along the river. May is the local insider sweet spot, full waterfalls at Mossbrae and Hedge Creek, wildflowers, and lower rates. Winter motorhome rental Dunsmuir trips are possible too, but plan for snow above 3,000 feet and pack tire chains if you're heading toward Mount Shasta.
weather.gov/mfr/I've never rented an RV before. How does it work?
First time renting an RV in Dunsmuir is honestly easier than most people expect. After you book on RVezy, your host meets you at pickup (or at your campsite if you chose delivery) and gives you a hands-on walkthrough of every system: water, propane, generator, slide-outs, leveling, dumping, and driving tips. They'll answer questions, share their favorite local stops like Hedge Creek Falls and the Dunsmuir Brewery Works, and stay reachable by message throughout your trip. You can also chat with the host before booking to ask anything at all. Pro tip: pick a smaller Class C or campervan rental Dunsmuir for your first trip, easier to drive and easier to park at Castle Crags.
fmcsa.dot.gov/safety/driver-safety/cmv-driving-tips-following-too-closelyWhat happens if something goes wrong on the road?
You're never on your own. Every Dunsmuir RV rental from RVezy includes 24/7 roadside assistance as part of the protection package, covering things like flat tires, jump starts, lockouts, and towing if needed. Cell service is solid along I-5 through Siskiyou County, but it can get spotty up forest roads near Castle Lake or McCloud, so save the roadside assistance number to your phone before heading out. Your host is also just a message away in the RVezy app for quick questions about the rig itself. RVezy customer support is available before, during, and after your trip, so help is always one tap away no matter where your Mount Shasta adventure takes you.
dot.ca.gov/programs/traffic-operations/roadside-safetyCan I take my Dunsmuir rental into Oregon or down to Los Angeles?
Yes, cross-state RV travel from Dunsmuir is one of the best parts of basing here. Most RVezy hosts allow trips throughout California and into Oregon, and the I-5 corridor makes it easy: Ashland is about 60 miles north, Crater Lake about 220 miles, Yosemite roughly 350 miles south, and the Oregon Coast around 250 miles via Grants Pass. Travel into Mexico isn't allowed on RVezy rentals because insurance doesn't extend there. Some hosts allow Canada travel, just confirm in a pre-booking message. Pro tip: an RV road trip from Dunsmuir up to Crater Lake and back through Lava Beds National Monument is a stunning four-to-five-day loop that locals rave about.
nps.gov/crla/planyourvisit/directions.htmHow much should I budget for fuel on a Dunsmuir RV trip?
Fuel is usually the second-biggest budget line after the rental itself, but Dunsmuir's location makes it manageable. Expect 8 to 12 miles per gallon for Class A and Class C motorhomes, 12 to 18 mpg for travel trailers behind a truck, and 18 to 22 mpg for a campervan rental. Siskiyou County gas prices typically run a bit above the California average since you're in the mountains, so top off in Redding or Weed where stations are larger and easier to navigate with an RV. For a 4-night loop covering Mount Shasta, Castle Crags, and McCloud Falls (about 250 miles), budget $150 to $300 in fuel depending on your rig.
eia.gov/petroleum/gasdiesel/How far in advance should I book a campground near Dunsmuir?
For peak summer (mid-June through Labor Day), book your campground the same day you book your RV, ideally three to six months out. Castle Crags State Park opens reservations six months ahead through ReserveCalifornia.com, and the riverside loop and full-hookup sites at Lake Siskiyou Camp Resort fill quickly for July and August weekends. Railroad Park Resort and McCloud RV Resort also book up fast during fly-fishing season on the Upper Sacramento River. Off-season (November through March) you can often find first-come, first-served availability at Castle Crags. Pro tip: midweek arrivals (Sunday through Wednesday) dramatically improve your chances of scoring a prime riverside spot.
reservecalifornia.com/What are the driving conditions like around Dunsmuir?
Driving in and out of Dunsmuir is easier than most mountain towns thanks to Interstate 5 running right through it. I-5 is a wide, well-maintained four-lane highway with gentle grades for an RV, even northbound up to Siskiyou Summit. Expect winding two-lane roads if you venture toward Castle Lake, McCloud Falls, or Stewart Springs, so take it slow with a larger motorhome. From November through April, carry tire chains, Caltrans frequently requires them on I-5 between Dunsmuir and Yreka during storms. Summer afternoons can be hot in the canyon, so drive early and let the RV's air conditioning catch up at your campsite. Check QuickMap from Caltrans before you roll for live road conditions.

Full-hookup parks like Lake Siskiyou Camp Resort, Railroad Park Resort, and McCloud RV Resort offer 30 and 50 amp power, water, sewer, Wi-Fi, hot showers, laundry, and dump stations. Many also include a TV, Bluetooth stereo, outdoor awning, and a generator for off-grid nights. Wi-Fi is hit-or-miss in canyon country, so cell hotspot or Starlink-equipped rigs are great for remote workers. Delivery and setup is the most popular add-on, with exact pricing shown on each listing. Pickup and drop-off usually happen at the host's location or at a Dunsmuir-area campground, and many hosts allow flexible times by request. Mileage allowances vary by host, some include 100 miles per night while others offer RV rental with unlimited mileage, so compare carefully when you rent an RV in Dunsmuir.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Dunsmuir%2C%20CaliforniaHow does payment and the security deposit work?
Payment for your Dunsmuir RV rental happens securely through RVezy, never directly to the host, which keeps everything traceable and protected. You pay your trip total at booking, and the host places a refundable security deposit hold on your card a few days before pickup, typically $500 to $1,500 depending on the rig's size and value. As long as you return the RV in the condition you received it and within the agreed mileage and generator hours, the hold is released after your trip. Pro tip: do a quick walkaround video at both pickup and drop-off, it's the easiest way to protect your full deposit and finish your Dunsmuir RV trip on a high note.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360038106214-How-the-security-deposit-worksHow do I handle cold weather and snow on a winter RV trip near Dunsmuir?
Winter in Dunsmuir is a hidden gem, snow-dusted Mount Shasta, fewer crowds, and cozy nights in the RV. Daytime highs from December through February sit around 42 to 48 degrees Fahrenheit with overnight lows in the high 20s, and snow is common above 3,000 feet. For a comfortable winter motorhome rental Dunsmuir trip, filter on RVezy for RVs with heated holding tanks, enclosed underbellies, and shore-power capability, then stay at a full-hookup park like Lake Siskiyou Camp Resort or Friendly RV Park which remain open year-round. Carry tire chains for I-5, top off propane often, and let your faucets drip on the coldest nights. Mount Shasta Ski Park is just 30 minutes away for an epic snow day.
