Campgrounds near Colfax, California
Colfax sits in the Sierra Nevada foothills at roughly 2,400 feet, along Interstate 80 between Sacramento and Reno. The town is a practical base for RV travelers because it puts several lake and river campgrounds within a short drive, all reachable from I-80 without mountain-pass driving.
The American River canyon lies just south of town inside Auburn State Recreation Area, a California State Parks unit covering roughly 40 miles of the North and Middle Forks of the American River. Mineral Bar - Auburn State Recreational Area is the closest developed site, located on the east side of the North Fork off Iowa Hill Road. To the north, Rollins Lake offers four independently run campgrounds along its 13 miles of shoreline: Orchard Springs Resort, Long Ravine Resort, Peninsula Camping and Boating Resort, and Greenhorn Campground. Rollins sits at roughly 2,100 feet off Highway 174 between Grass Valley and Colfax, and supports swimming, waterskiing, wakeboarding, and year-round fishing for trout, bass, kokanee, and catfish.
Things to do near Colfax
Rollins Lake is the main draw for families, with sandy beaches and boat rentals at Orchard Springs Resort, lakefront RV sites at Long Ravine Resort and Greenhorn Campground, and quieter coves on the Peninsula Camping and Boating Resort side. Boat launches are available at the Rollins Lake campgrounds, subject to seasonal closures and mussel-prevention rules. Anglers target rainbow trout, German brown, largemouth and smallmouth bass, catfish, crappie, and bluegill.
In the American River canyon, Mineral Bar - Auburn State Recreational Area provides river access for swimming, gold panning, and rafting put-ins. Auburn SRA also allows mountain biking and hiking on designated roads and trails. Historic downtown Colfax, Nevada City, and the Nevada County Narrow Gauge Railroad Museum are within easy driving range for half-day trips off-site.

Colfax sits above the Central Valley fog line and below the Sierra snow line, which keeps the foothill campgrounds usable across more of the year than higher elevations. Peak season runs from Memorial Day through Labor Day, when Rollins Lake fills, water temperatures climb, and waterfront sites at Orchard Springs Resort, Long Ravine Resort, Peninsula Camping and Boating Resort, and Greenhorn Campground book out weeks ahead.
Winter is the wettest stretch, with cool temperatures and occasional snow rather than persistent snowpack. Spring trails can be muddy and lake levels are typically full. Fall is dry and cooler, with strong fishing and lighter crowds. Fire restrictions are common in summer and fall: at Mineral Bar, campfires are prohibited from June 15 through October 31, and similar restrictions can be imposed at Rollins Lake campgrounds during PSPS events, power outages, or poor air quality. Peninsula Camping and Boating Resort operates seasonally, generally spring and summer only.

We booked the dude for an annual trip to a festival for our family (wife + 3 yr old daughter). The RV was absolutely perfect for the trip. My daughter was very excited about the bunk beds! We didn't use the TVs but there were several, including one outside, and a great library of family friendly DVDs. Everything was in working order which is generally not the case with most RVs and it drove perfectly. The host was amazing as well - super nice and very well prepared. It made the whole experience super easy. Overall, I'd highly recommend and plan on booking again next year!

This was our first experience renting an RV and I have to say the process was smooth and the hosts provided all the information needed including helpful videos for setup and take down. Highly recommend.

How to book campgrounds near Colfax
Reservation systems vary by campground. Mineral Bar - Auburn State Recreational Area is operated by California State Parks; summer reservations are taken through ReserveCalifornia.com or by phone at 800-444-7275, and bookings open up to six months in advance. From mid-October through the end of April, a small number of Mineral Bar sites revert to first-come, first-served.
The Rollins Lake campgrounds are independently run on Nevada Irrigation District land, with Greenhorn privately owned. Orchard Springs Resort, Long Ravine Resort, and Peninsula Camping and Boating Resort take reservations by phone, with Peninsula opening its spring and summer season bookings in January. Greenhorn Campground books directly through its own website and gatehouse. Holiday weekends fill earliest; book as soon as the window opens for July 4 and Labor Day.
What to expect on site
Expect a mix of styles. Mineral Bar is a primitive California State Parks site with about 15 reservable campsites, picnic tables, fire rings, and pit toilets, but no drinking water and no hookups; access is via a narrow paved road off Iowa Hill Road, and rigs should be sized accordingly. Maximum stay is 14 consecutive days.
The Rollins Lake campgrounds are more developed, with a combined total of roughly 250 sites across the four properties and a range of services including stores, restaurants, and boat rentals. Long Ravine Resort offers full hookup sites, a dump station, flush toilets, and hot showers. Greenhorn Campground has about 79 lakeside sites. Cell coverage is variable in the canyon and around the lake; download maps before arrival.

Frequently asked questions about campgrounds near Colfax, CA
How much does it cost to rent an RV in Colfax, CA?
RV rental in Colfax, CA is an affordable way to access the Sierra Nevada foothills and Lake Tahoe region. On RVezy, expect roughly $95 to $175 per night for travel trailers, $125 to $225 for Class C motorhomes, and $200 to $350 for larger Class A motorhomes, plus fuel and a refundable security deposit. You can score a cheap RV rental Colfax travelers love by booking midweek, traveling in May or September shoulder seasons, and filtering for trailers if you already have a tow vehicle. Pro tip: hosts based right off Interstate 80 in Colfax often offer delivery to nearby campgrounds like Mineral Bar or Greenhorn at Rollins Lake, which saves you the towing learning curve on your first trip.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Colfax,CaliforniaDo I need a special license to rent an RV in Colfax, California?
For the vast majority of rentals, your regular driver's license is all you need to rent an RV in Colfax. Under the California Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV), a standard Class C license lets you drive any housecar (motorhome) 40 feet or less and tow a trailer under 10,000 pounds Gross Vehicle Weight Rating (GVWR), which covers nearly every RV on RVezy. Renters must be 25 or older with a valid license, and RVezy verifies your ID right inside the booking flow. Visiting from abroad? Bring your home license plus an International Driving Permit (IDP) and you're set. Pro tip: most Colfax rentals are travel trailers, campervans, or Class C motorhomes specifically chosen to keep your Sierra trip stress-free.
dmv.ca.gov/portal/handbook/california-driver-handbook/driver-license-classes/Is RV insurance and roadside assistance included with my Colfax rental?
Yes, every RV rental in Colfax, CA booked through RVezy automatically includes a protection plan plus 24/7 roadside assistance, so you can hit Interstate 80 toward Donner Pass with peace of mind. The protection plan covers most damage to the vehicle during your trip, and you choose your coverage level during checkout, not the host. Roadside help is just a phone call away whether you have a flat on Highway 174 or need a jump start at Rollins Lake. Pro tip: pick your protection tier before you confirm so your Colfax RV trip starts the moment you turn the key.
rvezy.com/insurance-and-protectionWhat is the cancellation policy if my Colfax trip plans change?
You can book with confidence: RVezy, not the host, sets the cancellation policy, and every booking includes a money-back grace period right after you reserve so first-time renters are not locked in. Depending on how far ahead of your trip you cancel, you may be eligible for additional refunds. Because Colfax weather can shift quickly between the foothills and the Sierra crest, this flexibility matters. Pro tip: message the host through the listing before booking with your dates and route, then reserve early to lock in the best rigs for summer weekends at Rollins Lake or Auburn State Recreation Area.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360037736674-Understanding-the-cancellation-policy-for-guestsCan I bring my dog on a pet-friendly RV rental in Colfax?
Absolutely, your dog is welcome on plenty of trips. Use the Pet-Friendly filter on RVezy to instantly see every pet-friendly RV rental Colfax hosts offer, then message the host about your dog's size and any cleaning fees. Once you're on the road, leashed dogs are welcomed at Mineral Bar Campground and other sites in Auburn State Recreation Area, along with Bear River Campground and trails throughout Tahoe National Forest. Pro tip: the Stevens Trail trailhead right in Colfax is a gorgeous leashed-dog hike down to the North Fork American River, perfect for a sunrise stretch before you fire up the RV.
parks.ca.gov/?page_id=502Can the RV be delivered to my campground in Colfax?
Yes, RV delivery in Colfax is one of the most popular options on RVezy, especially for first-timers who would rather not tow a trailer up winding Highway 174. Many local hosts will deliver and set up your motorhome rental at campgrounds like Greenhorn at Rollins Lake, Long Ravine Resort, or Mineral Bar in Auburn State Recreation Area, then walk you through every system before they leave. Turn on the Delivery filter, enter your destination, and you will see which hosts deliver where and what they charge per mile. Pro tip: if you are flying into Sacramento International Airport (about 60 miles southwest), ask your host about delivery directly to your campsite so you skip towing altogether.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Colfax,CaliforniaHow far can I drive from Colfax, and what are the best road trip routes?
Colfax sits at the sweet spot of Interstate 80 in the Sierra foothills, putting you within easy reach of some of the West's best RV destinations. Popular routes for an RV road trip from Colfax include Lake Tahoe's north shore via Truckee (about 75 miles east, 1.5 hours), Reno, Nevada (about 95 miles, under 2 hours), Yosemite National Park's Big Oak Flat entrance via Highway 49 (about 160 miles, 3.5 hours), and Lassen Volcanic National Park (about 175 miles north). Hosts set their own mileage policies, and some Colfax listings include generous or even unlimited mileage. Pro tip: ask about an RV rental with unlimited mileage when you message your host so the Tahoe-Yosemite loop stays well within budget.
nps.gov/yose/planyourvisit/driving.htmWhat are the best campgrounds near Colfax for an RV trip?
The best campgrounds near Colfax sit within a 30-minute drive and cover everything from lakeside hookups to riverside dry camping. Top picks include Greenhorn Campground at Rollins Lake (lakefront tent and RV sites about 8 miles north), Long Ravine Resort on Rollins Lake (full hookups, swimming, kayak rentals), Mineral Bar Campground in Auburn State Recreation Area (riverside sites on the North Fork American River), Bear River Campground (a Placer County park with miles of trails), and nearby Gold Country RV parks just up Interstate 80. RV camping near Colfax delivers Sierra views without Tahoe-level prices. Pro tip: Rollins Lake books up fast for summer weekends, so reserve as soon as your dates are firm.
placer.ca.gov/5951/Bear-River-CampgroundWhen is the best time of year to rent an RV in Colfax?
Late April through October is the sweet spot for a Colfax RV trip, with the absolute best window being May through early October when foothill highs run 70 to 89 degrees Fahrenheit and Sierra mountain roads are reliably open. July and August are the hottest months (average highs near 89 degrees) and ideal for swimming the North Fork American River or boating on Rollins Lake. September and early October bring cooler nights, fewer crowds, and golden foothill light. Winter rentals are available too: Colfax averages about 19 inches of snowfall and Donner Summit nearby can be a powder paradise. Pro tip: chain controls on Interstate 80 are common from November to April, so winter renters should ask the host about tire chains and heated holding tanks.
weather.gov/sto/I have never rented an RV before. What support will I get in Colfax?
You will be fine, and you will not be doing this alone. Every Colfax host gives you a full walkthrough at pickup or delivery, covering propane, water, slide-outs, the generator, dumping, and how to level the rig at your campsite. Most hosts share a printed cheat sheet and stay reachable by text through the RVezy app during your trip. First time renting an RV in California? Start with a Class C motorhome or a small travel trailer (sub-25 feet), both easy to handle on Interstate 80 and Highway 174. RVezy customer support and 24/7 roadside assistance are also one tap away. Pro tip: practice backing into a few empty spots at the Colfax Park-and-Ride before heading to your campsite.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360039008774-Understanding-approved-driver-requirementsWhat happens if I break down or have a problem on the road?
Help is always close by. Every RV rental in Colfax, CA booked on RVezy includes 24/7 roadside assistance as part of the protection plan, covering flat tires, jump starts, lockouts, fuel delivery, and towing. If something mechanical goes sideways on Interstate 80 or up Highway 20 toward Nevada City, one phone call gets a technician dispatched. You can also message your host directly through the app, and most Colfax hosts respond quickly because they live locally. Pro tip: cell service can drop in canyons along the North Fork American River and parts of Tahoe National Forest, so download offline maps and screenshot your host's contact info before you leave town.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/34008759079835-RVezy-renter-protection-plans-in-detailCan I take my Colfax RV rental across state lines or into Canada or Mexico?
Yes, you can take your campervan rental from Colfax into Nevada, Oregon, Arizona, Utah, and beyond, which makes Reno, Lake Tahoe's east shore, and Great Basin National Park all easy plays. Cross-border travel into Canada may be allowed with prior written approval from your host because insurance and protection coverage must extend across the border, so always ask before you book. Travel into Mexico is not permitted on RVezy rentals because protection coverage does not apply south of the border. Pro tip: a classic loop is Interstate 80 east to Reno, then Highway 395 south to Mono Lake and back through Carson Pass, all in one rental.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360039340074-Insurance-coverage-validityWhat about fuel costs and gas mileage for an RV trip from Colfax?
Fuel is the second-biggest line item after the rental itself, but it is easy to budget. Most Class C motorhomes around Colfax get 8 to 12 miles per gallon, travel trailers towed by a half-ton truck average 10 to 14 mpg, and campervans can hit 16 to 20 mpg. California gas prices typically run higher than the national average, so fill up in Auburn or Roseville on the way up Interstate 80 where prices tend to be a bit cheaper than at the Colfax exit. For a 300-mile round trip to Lake Tahoe and back, budget roughly $150 to $250 in fuel for a Class C. Pro tip: many Colfax hosts let you return the RV with the same fuel level rather than charging premium top-off fees, which saves real money.
energy.ca.gov/data-reports/energy-almanac/transportation-energy/californias-gasoline-pricesHow far in advance should I book a campground near Colfax?
Book as soon as your dates are set, especially for summer. California State Parks campgrounds including Auburn State Recreation Area sites like Mineral Bar and Ruck-A-Chucky use ReserveCalifornia.com, which opens reservations six months in advance to the day, and prime summer Saturdays disappear quickly. Placer County's Bear River Campground takes reservations through the county parks site, and Rollins Lake campgrounds (Greenhorn, Long Ravine, Orchard Springs, Peninsula) book directly through each resort. For Tahoe National Forest sites along Interstate 80, use Recreation.gov. Pro tip: if you strike out on weekends, target a Sunday-through-Thursday Colfax RV trip; you will often find open sites at Bear River and riverside spots at Mineral Bar.
reservecalifornia.com/What are driving conditions like in and around Colfax?
Driving around Colfax is very RV-friendly once you know the local quirks. Interstate 80 is a wide, well-maintained four-lane highway with truck-friendly grades, and Colfax sits at about 2,400 feet of elevation, so summer drives are easy. Highway 174 to Grass Valley and Highway 20 to Nevada City are scenic but winding, so take them slow in larger Class A motorhomes. The big consideration is winter: Caltrans regularly requires tire chains on Interstate 80 over Donner Summit from November through April, and Donner Pass can briefly close during heavy storms. Pro tip: check Caltrans QuickMap before any drive over the Sierra, and avoid towing through Donner during active chain controls if it's your first RV trip.
quickmap.dot.ca.gov/What amenities should I expect at campgrounds near Colfax?
Local campgrounds run the full range, so you can match the experience to your comfort level. Full-hookup sites with water, electric, sewer, and showers are available at Long Ravine Resort and Orchard Springs at Rollins Lake. Mid-tier county and state park sites like Bear River Campground and Mineral Bar offer potable water spigots, vault or flush toilets, picnic tables, fire rings, and bear boxes but no hookups. Dump stations are available at Long Ravine and other private resorts in the area. Pro tip: most Auburn State Recreation Area sites are dry camping, so ask your Colfax host to start you with full fresh water tanks and empty holding tanks for maximum runtime.
parks.ca.gov/?page_id=502What's inside a typical RV rental in Colfax?
Expect a fully outfitted home on wheels. Most Colfax RV rentals sleep four to eight people across a queen or king bed, convertible dinette, and bunk or cab-over berths, with seatbelts for everyone traveling. Standard amenities include a propane stove, microwave, refrigerator, freezer, indoor bathroom with shower and toilet, roof air conditioning, furnace, hot water heater, and a 12-volt or onboard generator system for off-grid power. Many rigs include a TV, Bluetooth stereo, and outdoor awning, and some hosts add starter kits with linens, cookware, and camp chairs. Pro tip: filter by Sleeps count and message hosts about generator hours included, then ask if they'll throw in a Starlink or hotspot for spotty Tahoe National Forest cell coverage.
dmv.ca.gov/portal/handbook/recreational-vehicles-and-trailers-handbook-2011/What add-ons and pickup options can I choose for my Colfax RV rental?
Hosts make it easy to customize your trip. Popular add-ons on Colfax listings include linen and kitchen kits, bike racks, generators with extra propane, camp chairs and tables, Wi-Fi hotspots, kayaks for Rollins Lake, and pet packages. Pickup typically happens at the host's home in Colfax, Auburn, or Grass Valley, and many hosts offer delivery directly to your campground for a per-mile fee. Mileage policies vary, with most listings including 100 to 150 free miles per night and additional miles charged per mile; some hosts offer unlimited mileage. Pro tip: bundle delivery, setup, and a linen kit for a zero-stress family RV trip from Colfax, then just show up at the campsite with groceries.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Colfax,CaliforniaHow does payment and the security deposit work on RVezy?
Payment is straightforward and fully online through RVezy: you pay the rental total securely at booking with a credit or debit card, no cash exchanged with the host. A refundable security deposit is held separately before the trip starts to cover any incidentals like minor damage or excess mileage. As long as you return the RV in the same condition you got it, the deposit is released back within a few business days after the trip ends. Pro tip: take a quick walk-around video at pickup and dropoff in your Colfax host's driveway; that two-minute habit is the single best way to keep your full deposit and avoid surprises.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360038106214-How-the-security-deposit-worksCan I rent an RV in Colfax during the winter for a snow trip?
Yes, winter rentals are available and Colfax is one of the best launch points for a Sierra ski trip. You are about 45 minutes from Sugar Bowl, Boreal, and Donner Ski Ranch, and roughly an hour from Northstar and Palisades Tahoe via Interstate 80. Look for listings marked four-season or winterized, which feature heated holding tanks, enclosed underbellies, and propane furnaces sized for cold nights. Many North Tahoe RV parks like Coachland in Truckee stay open year-round with plowed sites and full hookups. Pro tip: ask your Colfax host to include tire chains (often required during Caltrans chain controls on Interstate 80) and show you how to install them before you leave the driveway, so a surprise storm at Donner Summit is no big deal.
