Campgrounds and RV parks near San Jose, CA

Base camp options run from urban Silicon Valley attractions to redwood hikes within an hour's drive. Visitors staying at Coyote Valley RV Resort can reach downtown San Jose museums, Levi's Stadium, and PayPal Park easily, and the resort sits next to a paved multi-use trail along Coyote Creek. For forest and trail days, Portola Redwoods State Park has eighteen miles of trails following meandering creeks past coast redwoods, ferns, and huckleberries, with waterfalls on Fall and Pescadero creeks. The park protects one of the taller redwoods in the Santa Cruz Mountains, standing over 300 feet high. Cycling is limited inside the park, but the Old Haul service road offers a scenic ride through redwoods toward Memorial County Park. Santa Cruz beaches, the boardwalk, and Monterey Bay Aquarium are all reachable as day trips from the area.

San Jose has a Mediterranean climate with a clear wet and dry split. Summers are warm and almost entirely rain-free, while winters are mild and wet, so summer is the most reliable window for RV travel in the area. In the city itself the parks stay open year-round, but redwood campgrounds in the Santa Cruz Mountains follow a tighter season. The campground at Portola Redwoods State Park is normally open from April through October. Peak demand runs Memorial Day through Labor Day, with weekends booking out months in advance. Spring brings green hills and flowing creeks; fall offers warm days, fewer crowds, and lower fire-season risk after the first rains arrive. Offshore-flow heat events can push temperatures well above normal, most commonly in fall and secondarily in spring, when dry inland air migrates west and warms as it descends into the Santa Clara Valley. Plan for shade and water during those stretches, and check fire-agency advisories before heading into the mountains in late summer and early fall.

Commercial RV resorts near San Jose are paved, full-service, and big-rig friendly. Coyote Valley RV Resort accommodates RVs up to 60 feet with full hookups including electric, water, and sewer connections, plus laundry, a pool, and dog areas. State park camping is a different experience. Portola Redwoods has no RV hookups, with a maximum length of 21 feet for trailers and 24 feet for motor homes, and only a handful of sites can fit RVs at all. The main campground features flush toilets, drinking water, paid showers, a campfire center, a camp host, and a visitor center. Cell reception is very limited in the canyon, so download maps before arrival. No gasoline or food is available at or near the park, so stock up in San Jose or along Highway 35.
