Folsom Lake is the main draw for water activity. The reservoir covers roughly 11,500 acres and supports boating, water-skiing, swimming, kayaking, paddleboarding, and fishing for trout, bass, catfish, and perch. The recreation area has more than 95 miles of trails open to hikers, cyclists, runners, and horseback riders. Lake Natoma, downstream of Folsom Dam, is limited to low-speed and non-motorized boating, which makes it a calmer option for paddlers. The South Fork of the American River, running through Lotus and Coloma, is one of the busiest whitewater rafting stretches in California, with Class II and III runs suitable for families. Marshall Gold Discovery State Historic Park in Coloma covers the site where gold was first found, and downtown Placerville has walkable Gold Rush history.

Summers in the foothills are hot, dry, and mostly clear, with daytime highs commonly in the high 80s to mid 90s Fahrenheit and very little rain from June through August. This is peak season for Folsom Lake and the South Fork American River, and weekends fill quickly. Reservation demand at Folsom Lake state campgrounds is heaviest from April through September. Spring brings green hillsides, blooming oaks, and wildflowers, along with the strongest river flows for rafting once releases begin. Lake levels are typically highest in late spring. Hookups vary: Placerville RV Resort & Campground and Ponderosa RV Resort offer full RV services, while Peninsula at Folsom Lake has piped drinking water and a sanitation dump station but no site hookups, and is rated for trailers up to about 18 feet and motorhomes up to 24 feet on narrow, winding access roads. Camp Lotus has RV sites with potable water, electricity, and a dump station, plus grassy tent sites on the South Fork. Cell service is reliable in Cameron Park and along Highway 50, but spotty at Peninsula and along Rattlesnake Bar Road. Summer days are hot and dry, so shade and water storage matter. Standard food storage practices apply at all sites.
