Campgrounds and RV parks near Livermore, CA

Mt Diablo State Park anchors the area. Live Oak Campground sits at 1,450 feet, one mile above the South Gate Entrance Station, with convenient access to Rock City's sandstone formations and the park's extensive trail network. The summit road climbs to sweeping views of the Bay, Central Valley, and Sierra on clear days. Closer to town, the Livermore Valley wine region runs dozens of tasting rooms, several with picnic lawns. Carnegie State Vehicular Recreation Area draws off-highway-vehicle riders to its trail network for motorcycles, ATVs, and 4x4 vehicles. Delta-based campgrounds put boating, striped bass and sturgeon fishing, water-skiing, and wakeboarding at the doorstep. Del Valle Regional Park, just south of Livermore, adds a reservoir for swimming, paddling, and shoreline hiking.

Spring and fall are the most comfortable windows for camping near Livermore. From March through May, hills turn green, wildflowers bloom on Mt Diablo, and daytime highs sit in the upper 60s Fahrenheit. Reservable state-park sites fill quickly on weekends in this stretch, especially for Live Oak. Summers are hot and very dry inland: highs at Carnegie and in the Delta routinely push into the 90s, and fire restrictions are common. The Delta marinas are at their busiest between Memorial Day and Labor Day, with boating traffic peaking on holiday weekends. Fall brings cooler nights and smaller crowds, often the best time for RV travelers who want to combine wine country with Mt Diablo hiking. Winter is the wet season, with most of the year's rain falling between November and March. Because of high fire danger during the hot, dry months, call the Mount Diablo State Park information line before traveling to confirm conditions and any closures. Lower-elevation Delta parks generally stay open year-round.

Plan rig size carefully. At Live Oak, the maximum length for trailers and motorhomes is 20 feet, and there are no hookups, dump stations, or camp stores within the park. Carnegie's campground can accommodate larger rigs and offers flush toilets, showers, potable water, and shade ramadas, but no hookups. Delta parks generally offer full hookups, laundry, and boat launches; state-park sites provide picnic tables, fire rings, and restrooms, but expect spotty cell service on Mt Diablo and at Carnegie. Bring extra water for summer stays at higher elevations. Black bears are not a concern in this immediate area, but raccoons are persistent at Mt Diablo, and food lockers should be used. Leashed dogs are welcome in most developed campgrounds but restricted from state-park trails.
