The beach is the main draw: surfing, clamming, beachcombing, and walking the Pismo Pier. From North Beach campground, the Monarch Butterfly Grove is a short walk south across Carpenter Creek, with thousands of western monarchs clustering in the eucalyptus from roughly November through February. The Oceano Lagoon trail near Oceano campground is good for birdwatching, and the Oceano Dunes District Visitor Center runs free educational programs. Off-road riding in the Oceano Dunes SVRA has been subject to court-ordered closures and partial reopenings, so confirm vehicle access before planning an OHV trip.
